i used to inline skate, but now i skate on quads, i’m an advanced skater and skate both at the rink and skatepark- i’ve been considering getting a pair of these just for fun/something different and this video was so helpful ty !!

I think that inline skating makes you a stronger skater overall because inline frames are heavier and pavement offers more resistance so you really develop more strength and it transfers to the ice. We skated Wednesday for 60 minutes on a basketball court and did 30’ jumps and stretching “off ice” and we felt dead tired and sore afterwards.

I agree 100%! I once spent fifteen minutes doing big figure-8’s at the end of a practice and I felt like I couldn’t leave the couch for a day or two. More than anything though, they’ve really helped me with getting better control over my edges because you really have to work for them on inlines😂!

I’m considering getting a pair of inlines but I’ve never ice skated properly before. Only birthday parties and the occasional Girl Scout trip.instead Ive been on quads for about 6 months and I’ve taught myself pretty well I think, to the point that my friend who does figure skating asked who my coach was. I’d really like to try inlines cuz they’re so much less clunky and everything is easier to manoeuvre cuz they’re so much lighter and less of the skate touches the ground. Plus ice skating isn’t really an option for me but they’re finally building an ice rink on the edge of my city so maybe when it opens I’ll try that too. I have no idea how I’m going to deal with moving to inlines from quads. I’ve tried a friends inlines and I felt a little wobbly but turns weren’t hard. And maybe I’ll finally be able to do a one foot spin, something I’ve been fighting with my quad skates with for months. I’m excited to see how it goes but MMA have to save up the money first. These things cost way more than my quad skates it seems. But I’m hopeful that I might get some by new year maybe :)

I know this is 4 months old, BUT! If you’re still debating and still looking, I too am a self taught quad skater, struggling with her spins for 4 months now, but have been dying to try Ice skating. I just received my pair of Jackson Atom inline figure skates, their black suede pair today. They were $250 off of Amazon and they’re amazing!! Catching your balance and understanding the edges are rather weird, but after a little just trust your feet as usual and you’ll be gliding. I hope this helped!

Sorry, I’ve never tried quads before but from my understanding, they’re easier to balance on and harder to articulate edges. I think it depends on what your main goal for having inline/quad skates is. If it’s specifically to practice for ice skating and work on edges and moves for the ice, inlines are better, but if it’s more recreational or occasional, quads are cheaper and probably a better fit. To be fair, I got my inlines after my first season on ice when I could just barely do a waltz jump, so it really depends on your goals and how much money you’re willing to spend!😅😂 Good luck!

I just wanna add on that I would suggest buying your frame and your boot as a set. Very often it is cheaper to buy them together preassembled rather than as individual pieces, but finding sets that you like can also be difficult so just do whatever works for you and your budget 🤷‍♂️

as a late 30s inline skater, who's last been on ice skates >20 years ago, those toe stoppers look terrifying to me. but i'd love to see what a figure skater could pull off on rockered argessive skates. on wheel durability: hyper wheels have an impeckable reputation since the 90s, and live up to it to this day. i'd think hyper hockey wheels, that are ment to somewhat mimic ice skates, could be s great choice. (no, i'm not sponsired. but if anybody has tried those for dry land figure skating, i'm curious how it turned out.)

This is so helpful, thank you! You are so underrated. This is such a great video! Just a quick question. I've been a roller skater for a while, though I haven't gotten very serious about it. I am looking into trying inline skating/roller balding, but I'm not sure what brand of skate to get. I don't want to spend too much money, but I would still like a good quality skate. What would you recommend? Also, on a completely unrelated note, you have such an awesome voice!!

Thank you! To be honest, recommending a frame set is a little hard; it depends on the country you're from, availability of frames, and what you feel comfortable spending. I have a video on the different brands of inline figure skates, and while it's a little outdated since Golden Horse and Jackson both came out with new frame sets, it might help guide you a little more. I'm also super biased in that I've only ever tried Snow White skates so I'm not sure how 3 wheels compare to 4, or how skates like Off-Ice and PIC compare to brands like SW, Roll-Line, Starlight, or Golden Horse.

Hi Hazuki! I'm currently skating on regular inlines and am considering transitioning to artistic skates. What's the best way to gauge my boot size? I know there's more factors to consider such as stiffness?? I've been told to get sized at a shop, but I think I'll feel obligated to buy from them once I do. So hoping I can go off of my shoe size. Anyway, any advice would be super welcome

Yikes, I know the feeling of sales people pressure🥲 There's some great resources for sizing at home across figure skate blogs, but they tend to boil down to how long and wide your feet are, and what types of skills you want to work on in relation to body weight (body weight isn't exact numbers though, more along the lines of how much force you're putting on your boot when you do edges, jump, spin, etc; for example an 8 year old and a 28 year old could be working on the same stuff but the 28 year old is bigger and needs more ankle support). Risport, EDEA, and Jacksons, as well as most figure skate boot manufacturers have lots of guides on their website about which boot/stiffness you should pick (some even have little quizzes), as well as sizing guides and instructions on how to use them. I would advise against going off shoe size though since across brands they vary a fair bit, and measuring your foot in inches/cm gives you a more accurate and reliable number!

I love your videos!! I've recently switched to inlines (snow white frames ☺️) and your tips have been very helpful. However, I can't get over the fear of falling on asphalt, I'm stuck in a school gym for now (also my living room but don't tell my mum lol), do you have any tips on how to overcome that?

Thank you! I’d recommend getting a pair of padded shorts (or they might be called crash shorts?) so if you fall on your butt, it’ll both not be scary and not hurt. Wear wrist, elbow, and knee guards, and slowly work your way up. If you have things to hold onto (a railing, a chair, a wall etc), it might help build some confidence? I used to skate in my bedroom and I’d bail out of a bad spin attempt or glide by falling onto my bed (idk if that’ll help though😂). I started out terrified too but eventually, you’ll get more and more used to the feel of inlines! I think for me, starting out in a small space really helped because I could catch myself easily. If you keep skating in your living room though, maybe move anything expensive or heirloom-y out before you start, just in case😅. In the meantime, if weather allows, wear long pants and maybe a long sleeved shirt just in case you do fall!

How much the toe stops lasts? Do you have to change them very often? And on the ice I use Edea Overture, but for the in-lines I’m not sure what should I choose..should I go for Overture as well, or it would be enough a Risport Antares for example? I’m practicing the single jumps and the most basic spins

It depends a lot on your skating surface and how often you skate, but I try to make my stops last a year or so. I’ve also gone through a pair in about 4 months so everything’s relative😅 As for boots, I’d email a local skate retailer since they’re super knowledgeable about what would best suit your needs!

I used to use SpeedMax wheels but normal inline wheels for rollerblades can also work (that’s what I have currently, I wanted to save some money and get generic wheels as opposed to specifically inline figure skating wheels). Just make sure the durometer (the ‘A’ rating) is high enough for pavement!

Hi o my gosh, I bought the GH loop skates in the summer but felt there was such a disconnect from resources i could find about inline skating. My biggest thing is that I am not sure whether it comes with outdoor or indoor wheels, but i find on pavement, it vibrates way too much and my ankles ache after 10-15 mins, so i am assuming it comes with indoor wheels. What kind of outdoor wheels can I buy and where? I am also located in canada. Thank you so much.

I've been rollerblading for a lonnng time (lol since i was a kid) and i plan to buy figure inline skate because it's difficult to do figures (especially because the base is too long so i tend to bump in it). So i found some on il pattino riccione store that seems nice for a first pair (its risport antares boots + snow white frames) and they give the option of the wheels so i was wondering if you could give an advice on which one i should pick to skate outside (i usually do the figure stuff on a smooth concrete near my place): they gave the option wheel spiral 84A / wheel speed max 89A / wheel zero 86 A. As i'm reading your comment above i guess i should pick 89 or 86? Thank again for you work, it's really nice to share the lot of knowledge you have about inline skating!! (PS: sorry for my english if i made any mistakes, i'm a french native aha)

Thank you! The 86A and 89A wheels are probably the ones you would want to get as you mentioned! It would also depend a little on if you prefer softer or harder wheels when you skate? If you plan to skate on other outdoor surfaces that may be a little rougher, I would go with the harder ones, but I think it comes down to personal preference.

I think I’ll go with 89A as you mentionned, it might be better for rough surfaces (there is only one spot near my place with super smooth concrete, the rest is kinda rough), i kinda like it softer, but i think 89a might match with the roughness of the outdoors surfaces near my place better ! Anyways I can always order news wheels if I’m not satisfied aha Thanks a lot again!❤️

I'm looking for info on if anyone has tried to just replace the first wheel of their inline skates with toe-stops. As opposed to buying hella expensive frames+wheels. Eyeballing it looks like it could work...

Ooo that’s an interesting idea! There might be an issue if you try to install standard metric or imperial toe stops since there’s nowhere to screw them onto but I thinK PIC has toe stops on an axis-like things? Let me know if it works out!

Do you use boots with the same stiffness for inline and figure skating? I'm confused why some people prefer softer boots for inline.

I think it just comes to personal preference and availability. Personally my inline boots are softer than my ice boots because they’re broken down a lot more, and I haven’t had any major issues with either yet. It could also be that since maneuvering in inlines is tougher, having a slightly softer boot somehow makes it easier? Sorry I couldn’t give you a more definite answer 😖

Normal inlines like rollerblades don't have the toe stop at the front, but instead have a (usually detachable) brake on the back. The standard for them is 4 wheels rather than the 3 standard wheels of an inline figure skate. The makeup of the boot tends to be almost hockey-skate like, with Velcro or plastic fasteners rather than the figure boots that inline figure skates uses. With roller-skates (often called quads), the differences between the standard and the artistic seem to be less, mostly about the sturdiness of the truck and boot support. But, I don't know enough about artistic roller-skates to confidently say that so you might want to ask someone with artistic roller-skates! Sorry I can't be more help :(

I actually got them off of eBay for super cheap so I’m not sure of the brand. Snow Whites come with speed max wheels for outdoor skaters though and those were designed with inline figure in mind so they’re great!

It depends on the person but it’ll help with your balance and control over edges for sure! Be careful of the toe pick, and be mindful of the fact that ice is wayyyy more slippery than pavement, but it should help!

lol i have the answer! i went to a skate shop and i picked out the boot brand based off of my foot type and my walk. and they picked out the pic frames with 3 wheels.

Not necessarily, stability (I’d imagine, I’ve never tried PICs or Off-Ice) is pretty similar between the two, but three wheels don’t allow you to lean very far back on your blade. On the other hand, a lot of 3-wheel frames offer better customizability in wheels, toe stops, rockers, etc. and generally have sturdier-built frames.

I'd say spinning on ice is easier than on inlines in my experience. In both cases though, spinning on a spin board to practice is really helpful though!

Haha I’m not a professional by any means! Be careful on ice though, you spin on a different spot on your foot on inlines than on ice so watch out for scraping the toe pick or tripping on the ice!

hi! beginner here 👋🏻 i own a pair of inline skates that i got years ago. recently, i decided to try out inline figure skating (as an alt to on ice skating) but then i realised that i need to use proper inline figure skates in order to land on jumps like waltz as well as spins (correct me if im wrong!) so the problem is…i cant find any inline figure skates in my country! 🥲 i cant afford to get them from the US or other countries, the shipping fee is too high. what do i do? is it possible to learn inline figure skating on traditional, freestyle inline skates? or do i really need to get inline figure skates? i really have no idea what to do, i might just get quad skates to learn figure skating but im not sure if they’re the same as inline & ice.

It’s dependant on how advanced you are on ice. If you’re new to skating or haven’t gotten waltz jumps yet, I would say you can practice your edges, crossovers, and learn to control your blades on traditional inlines. If you can already do a waltz jump, you might want to consider getting quads so you have a toe stop for spins and jumps, but I would recommend researching all you can do with quads and looking into technique before you buy them just to be sure!
