I have about 30 hours of gameplay and I can't take the thought that snipers are underpowered and non-predator animals are bullet sponges. Oh and the "arsenal" isn't that large, especially the sidearms. A single 9mm pistol, 4 variants of the .44 Magnum revolver, a 1911 and a couple SMGs. And a sawn-off Side by Side which is pretty useless

I think sometimes having a silent protagonist can make for a more immersive experience. Example: Dishonored vs Dishonored 2. In the first game Corvo is silent all the time, which makes him a player self-insert. It makes you feel like it’s your progress and your achievements. In the second game your immersion is constantly ruined by whatever cringy lines the protagonist - not “you” - has to say.

I don't really agree with the idea that blank-slate protagonists are bad necessarily. In fact, I would say that certain genres, like Western RPGs, benefit tremendously from having silent, non-voiced protagonists. Fallout 4 is example of how giving a protagonist a voice and character is wrong-headed. In Fallout, it was the PLAYER who gave the character a voice and character, and dialogue system and SPECIAL were just the player's tool-box to define their character. So, Far Cry 5's decision to have a customized blank-slate is perfectly fine and is actually the final step in Far Cry's gradually incorporation of RPG elements. Honestly, considering how dumbed down Fallout 4 is, the two series are now nearly the same when it comes to the amount of RPG elements in them. And ironically, Far Cry 5 would do a lot better if they actually made it a RPG like New Vegas, with plenty of dialogue choices for our silent protagonist to say. Fewer but more intense combat encounters and a more grounded setting would have also done wonders. Instead of gunning down dozens of brainless mooks, it would be interesting to have a combination of realistic, tactical combat, an open-world to explore, and a robust dialogue system that both provides a good story and maybe even allow for pacifist runs where you can actually behave like a real federal marshal. On that note, perhaps having several backgrounds to chose from would be better actually, and even multiple endings. Sure, it would be a drastic change from the Far-Cry formula, but that is exactly what is needed.

I remember back when this game was close to release and the news had to report on a public shooting that took place in a church. I made everyone in my game design class die of laughter by saying it was all just a live action trailer for Far Cry 5.

As someone who lived in rual montana. The game looks great but also looks a lot more northern than the parts I lived at. In Montana, the closer to the dakotas you're at, The more flat and treeless it gets . There are some parts of it that do look nice though, But i regularly had to travel 80+ miles (or 128km) just to get basic groceries and such. It was very fun to play the game while living in Montana, Was a strange feeling playing a video game that takes place where i live

You should check out Sniper ghost warrior 3, its basically far cry but more stealthy and with snipers. You can get it really cheap on key stores. It is a bit low budget though

Yes- protagonists need to talk, they need to have names, and it's great for their names to be implemented. Something FO4 tried to do but was just so woefully short on since they like Ubi Montreal here failed to understand that it's a videogame- it needs player input. 3 choices amounting to the same thing and "nevermind" is not open conversation- there should be separate paths to take leading to separate ends that ideally are influenced based on choices that define the character.

I picked up Far Cry 5. I could forgive the recycled enemies over and over. But, I can't forgive those horrible endings. They took away any desire I had to replay the game.

I just finished far cry 5 the other day I thought the game was amazing with an edgy ending. I thought the new guns for hire system was innovative. It did feel kind of Grind-y in the end but over all good game.

My biggest ire with the game was how much you were forced into missions and how you had absolutely no control in them. Let's say you get forced into Hope halucination. She tells you to walk, you walk, she tells you to jump from a cliff, you jump from a cliff. I know I shouldn't expect any different but it really bogged me down (I spent half an hour trying to walk in the opposite direction, nope). The same with the others. "Yes, go kill them all, become animal". And what if I don't want to? Nope, you have no choice. I couldn't force myself through the game. While it's just a game it clashed too hard with my beliefs and with who I am. It's kind of funny that previous installments didn't frustrate me in the same way this one does and in Far Cry 3 as Fringy said you literally change from a spoiled brat into a bloodthirsty murderer.

Doing John Seed's area I enjoyed for the most part. Faith area was less enjoyable and Jacob's area was a mix for me. As for Joseph if the choice was given Joseph would have been shot dead a casualty of the conflict he started.The Radios hint at nuclear war I don't think that could have been prevented in any choice made. The 2 game ending both sucked and the secret ending is basically saying don't play the game.

Farcry 5 has almost no replayability to me.

You actually don't really even get a choice with the endings. If you choose to walk away, you still have a mission objective to confront Joseph. It simply resets the game to before you confronted him and you're forced to pick the nuclear ending, which is really lame. FarCry 4 was one of my favorites because of the choices you had to make, but there's no choice in 5, there's nothing you can do to change anything. It sucks. I enjoyed the game for what it was, but the story was such a let down for me. I saw the end of Jacob's storyline coming a mile away, and at the end of the last "herd culling" hallucination I waited the timer out and didn't shoot Eli. However, that just makes you fail the mission and you're forced to kill him. Edit - My biggest gripe with the game is that once you liberate a region, there's no more enemies. You only run into enemies that are procedurally generated for missions or events. Sure it makes sense that once the leader is gone, the cultists would clear out, but also it doesn't. As fanatical as they are, I'd think that the cultists would do everything in their power to keep that part of the cult alive, or to try to avenge their fallen leader. But no, nothing happens, it's just 2-4 enemies at prepper stashes, 2 enemies at stationary reaping trucks, and enemies that spawn for missions. My favorite part of playing through the campaign was just running into enemies, it made exploring more exciting for me. I loved that in FC3 and FC4 you could reset the outposts and the area surrounding those outposts would become hostile again. Unfortunately, resetting the outposts in FC5 does just that, resets the outposts. Apparently they've heard our cries for NG+, so I can only hope that comes into the game because I don't want to rewrite my save to have fun, when that fun will be interrupted by forced story missions, only to be inevitably cut short once I liberate a region.

Its my first Far Cry game, and to be honest after completing one "zone" I got really bored with it. Sure gunplay is somewhat fun but shooting the same things over and over again is really boring, no player choice in the story no dialogue options, nothing.. guess I'm just to much of an RPG player to find meaningful fun in this game.

I disagree about a protagonist having to be voiced. I can't stand voiced main characters in rpgs for instance. Which is why I never picked up Fallout 4 or Dragon Age Inquisition.

I really like Far Cry 5 for the beautiful setting and really well done atmosphere. Hell of a lot better than that Far Cry 3 DLC that some people call "Far Cry 4".

I hated this game so much it was so disappointing

I hated the ending(s) as well, especially if there is not going to be any followup where Seed gets his shit kicked in. Spoilers My interpretation of the nuke ending is that basically the world isn't actually ending. There is no global war or whatever. Your actions up to that point backed seed into a corner, and rather than let himself be arrested his remaining followers were ordered to detonate nukes stolen from the three silos that the cult had taken over. I think he is messing with your head that the whole world is fucked, just everyone in the county. Of course I could be totally wrong, it's still a sour note of an ending that killed any desire for me to replay it.
