Volcanic eruption, base evacuation, days turning to night, all of these and more, stay tuned. We have our own personal videos that have to get uploaded, but this was the official FEN news broadcast that military and families saw once the dust settled. My husband and I unforgettable experienced.

So sad. I was one of those of the 1500 who remained behind and evacuated the morning of the eruption. We returned to Clark a few days later only to find almost total destruction and wet sand/ash covering everything. Greatest assignment of my career and I miss it so much. It took me weeks to locate my Filipina girlfriend. We were married three months later and have been married for 33 years.

Brings back sad memories. I was born in pampanga, and my father made me go back to the US to finish college. I had one year left, and enlisted with the plan to be assigned back to clark. During basic training, Pinatubo erupted. I didnt get back to Angeles until 18 months ago, at 50 years old. Everything is so different here now. Thank you for posting.

As a US Army Specialist I got to see Clark Air Force Base before the eruption for a few weeks in 1989 while on a 45 day leave of "Adventure". I was flying Military Space - A trying to get to a US Air Force Base in Thailand but missed one of the two monthly military flights out of Clark because the C-5 Galaxy that I had hopped out of Hickam AFB Hawaii had tail fins problems that grounded the plane for a few days. With no flights out I spent the last few weeks of my leave at Clark. So glad I got to see it was still operational. Gone But Not Forgotten.

Brings back memories, both sad but respect of those caught up in the afternoon darkness and tremor that persisted on that day 96 shock waves hit. I was a 36 yrs old Australian Army Sgt on vacation, shit hit the fan and I was drinking beers with mates and US guys at Moon-Doggies, as the Moon-doggies sign kept swinging each time a tremor struck, and our beers were rejuvenated. Looking overs at Clarke as the last convoys were making a run for it ( ZAMBALES- wrong place to go that day). The chores of shouts went out to the single barmaid left, one more beer. By this time we all had ash grey hair. So it was decided that we move to a safe haven that would accommodate us for both more beer and food, down to Garfield ( old Garfield) we marched. Auntie Tess and the staff were over joyed to see us enter, and it comforted them a lot, that boys came back to the clubroom. For the next week I stayed to assist both my US brothers and Filipinos, shoveling Lahar off roofs be for they collapsed and do what I could. At the time I was on vacation with my Filipino fiancé. Was the best holiday we ever had, but it is another story for an old digger to tell people, and each year I go back, I meet Filipinos from back then, even the peanut boy selling those great garlic nuts.

I was a kid living in Manila when Pinatubo erupted. It was so dark and raining at around 2 or 3 pm. The next day, ashes were all over. I've been hearing news from the adults that a volcano was erupting but i never realized how catastrophic it was until i was older.

We've had a house in Pangasinan for decades, right across the border from Tarlac Prov., and we lucked out when Pinatubo went off. The Tradewinds blew the ash westward just enough where we didn't get hardly any ashfall at all -- while just a few miles SW of us the place was buried in ash; looked like a moonscape, especially at night.

There's a BBC Horizons / NOVA special with much of this footage in it, "In the Path of a Killer Volcano", that focuses on the volcanologists who saved so many by absolutely nailing the prediction. If they'd failed, no one would have believed them when it mattered, but they got everything right and lives were saved, as seen here.

@@jkocol My favorite part of the Nova program is when the US Air Force General in charge of Clark Air Force Base in Luzon says, "I made the decision to evacuate Clark when [a seismologist named Andy] ran past me and said, 'General, you'd better put jam in your pockets, because we're all about to be toast." The General said that no matter the scientists' instruments and know-how, when that young scientist said that, running away, from him, he figured he's better follow him. 300,000 lives were saved.

I went to Jungle survival school, there at Clark, in 1971. I remember taking a photo of that volcano from up on the hills behind the base. It didn't look REAL. It looked like something out of a painting or a science fiction movie. BEAUTIFUL. Too bad it blew up and spoiled the USAF base at Clark and its own natural beauty.
