I'll definitely recommend the Coens' MILLER'S CROSSING from 1990, an exquisite atmospheric crime drama.

Agree 1000%. Millers Crossing is my favorite Coens brother film and in my opinion one of their most underrated.

One of my favorite films. I watched back in the 90’s when it released and I watch it from time to time. it never gets old. It always keeps me on the edge of my seat. Brilliant movie.

Cohn Brothers Blood Simple also stars Frances McDormand and is similarly dark like Fargo.

To date, Frances McDormand (Marge) has three Best Actress Oscars. My favorite movie she stars in is Three Billboards in Ebbing, Missouri. Besides Fargo, she won Oscar for Three Billboards (drama). Outstanding movie. You'll recognize other characters. Two Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor. Sam Rockwell won. Very inense acting. Enjoyed this reaction. Great movie.

Except for the beginning and the end, the story took place in Minnesota. The "Twin Cities" referred to are Minneapolis and St. Paul. Brainerd, where Marge was Chief of Police, is 125 miles north of the Cities. I had the impression that Gaer Grimsrud, Carl Showalter, and Shep Proudfoot were ex-cons. Proudfoot and Grimsrud apparently did their time together, Showalter and Grimsrud met at another time. Proudfoot says he vouches for Grimsrud, never heard of Showalter. It's just like Jerry to consult with a nasty crook/junkie like Proudfoot to find kidnappers -- not only nasty and dangerous, but inept as hell, capable of nothing but violence and chaos.

It actually all takes place in Minnesota except for the first meeting in a bar in supposedly Fargo. In Brainerd and Minneapolis. Yes, we talk like that in Minnesota - not quite as pronounced except in the north parts of Mn. And everyone's nice to the point of ridiculousness. It's hard to park your car because the other guy waiting for the spot tells you to go first and use it, and you tell them oh, that's okay, you go ahead. It can take a while, yah.

Coens' films ALWAYS include humor, even if they portray mafias, crimes or old west stories that seem to have none. If you look closely, they always frame their characters with close-ups shots on their faces so that we can see their hardships well, but we can also laugh at them.

Hope you recognized the elements that were echoed in LEBOWSKI: Both films have a million-dollar ransom for a wife. In both films, Steve Buscemi says, “in and out.” The Dude is eager to give 4 dollars because Carl is reluctant to give 4 dollars. Peter Stormare wants pancakes in both films. Bunny Lebowski is originally from Moorhead Minnesota, the city next to . . . Fargo.

@@thunderb4stard80 The Coen brothers' films are full of interconnections (as are those of Tarantino). This just happens to be a particularly striking example. Keep your eyes open and enjoy the deja vu.

Almost all of this film's story takes place in Minnesota-only the opening scene is in North Dakota (when Jerry first meets the kidnappers).

The reason Gerry needs the money is he’s been embezzling money from the car dealership (owned by his father in law) and the finance company is closing in - he owes $320k

*Miller's Crossing* and *Barton Fink* are a couple of Coen brothers movies that are not often reacted to on KZfaq, but I love them both. *Miller's Crossing* is a mob movie, and *Barton Fink* is about a writer.

This might be my favorite movie ever; after watching it many times I realized that not one scene is boring or pointless. The other movie I'd say this about is Goodfellas. I can always sit down and watch either. Can't wait to see the Fargo series on this channel! Just found you guys and I love how intelligent and observant the reactions have been!

I'm going with everyone suggesting "Miller's Crossing'. I'll also add "Blood Simple". David Lynch is the master of the seedy underbelly of suburbia, so if you haven't watched any (or many) of his films (or "Twin Peaks") you're in for a treat!

I'm going to give you one of my favorite Coen brother movies that only about 3 people saw..It's called "A Serious Man."..It has to be one of the funniest movies, but funny is subjective, and I'm beginning to think I have a very strange sense of humor..I'm almost 67 and I'm only finding that out now...There is a scene dealing with the story of a dentist in it that to me is freaking comedy GENIUS!..I grew up in Massapequa NY, which was called Matzo-pizza for the number of Jews and Italians living there..The movie is, I'm guessing, from the Coens own experiences growing up in a Jewish section of Minnesota...Maybe that's why I can relate so much, but it is hysterical!..To me, anyway...Watch it with an open mind.

Did you notice the part where Buscemi get's it with the axe?..Almost the exact same scene in "Burn After Reading" where Malcovich comes running out of the house with the hachet and whacks that gym guy? (sorry, don't know the actor's name) Incredible how similar it is!..Cohens must like to see people get hacked up!..Lol!

The best Coen film IMO that no one reacts to is Inside Llewyn Davis. Oscar Isaac gives the best performance of the 2010s decade, and the movie is beautiful, poetic, and deep. A must!

Frances McDormand, who is married to Joel Coen, won her first Oscar for playing Marge Gunderson. She has four Oscars, three for acting and one for producing. The Coens are from Minnesota and know the culture well. Among the many fine recommendations other commenters have made, I would add Barton Fink. John Goodman is brilliant in it, as is John Turturro.

If you want another serious Coen Brothers film, you can't go wrong with No Country for Old Men. I don't know if it's their best work (I'm terribly partial to Brother, Where Art Thou? too), but it's damn impressive.

More Coen: Raising Arizona is a must, and I like two underrated ones, Hudsucker Proxy and Inside Llewyn Davis. And with all their other good and great ones, I still like O Brother best.

Criminals really can be as bumbling as the ones here, and that is what is most dangerous about them. There are so many factors on kids not being out and playing anymore, and I have yet to decide on one. Even in the past, sometimes it depended on the parents. My parents didn't care if I was out and about. Those of other kids did. They would have to "check in" with their parents. My grandparents were extremely nervous when I would visit them and didn't want me out of sight, whereas I had been going to movies and wandering stores by myself.

I don't think Jerry needed the money for the land, it's hinted at early when talking to the thugs that he's in trouble but he doesn't say what kind. I think his money problem is kind of a MacGuffin. We don't know what it is, we just know it's serious enough for him to plot the crime. Of course this movie isn't based on a true story, and though there are real crimes that were used for inspiration the opening text is a lie used to establish mood. The Coen Bros got some grief for that. There have been stories though of people travelling up there looking for the money. There is even one half-true legend of a depressed office lady from Japan who came here hoping to find it. It's hard to imagine someone fooling themselves into thinking a case buried in the snow would stay hidden long, but in the days of VHS and the internet still in its obscure infancy, it could be that some people got the movie on tape or on late-night cable and thought they were given access to secret information.

Other Coen bros movies you should watch are: the big lebowski, burn after reading, suburbicon, true grit, and bad santa You'll notice that just like Quentin Tarrantino, the Coen Bros use a lot of the same actors in there movies.

You asked "what's your favorite film opening"? I like the Columbia one in the 70s that had the moog synth. I also liked the Warner Brothers logo of the 70s. And I loved the United Artists one of the 60s, short and sweet. I prefer them short. Two lion roars and let's go. A brief shot of a mountain and let's go. I can't stand all these long company intros with all the overdone animation and music.
