"My brothers and I own farmland in three different counties in central Kentucky and we needed another tractor that would be faster and more comfortable to drive than a conventional farm tractor," says J.D. Crawley, Harrodsburg, Kent., about the "tructor" he built with his brothers, Ron and Royce. They also operate Crawley's Auto & Machine Shop.
"We needed another tractor to rotary cut, disk harrow, and move round bales of hay. We built it using a GMC 1 1/2 ton truck and chassis. The rear end and trans-mission assembly are from an Oliver 70 row crop tractor with dual range transmission. We repowered the truck with a 1973 Cadillac engine and automatic transmission, giving our tructor 24 forward speeds and 6 in reverse. It has 105 horsepower and runs anywhere from 0 to 48 mph.
"In order to keep the automatic trans-mission running cool we installed a 20 gal. per minute oil cooler, with an electric fan, directly behind the cab.
"It's also equipped with a mechanical constant speed governor taken off a Huber Warco backhoe. The hydraulic lift system is powered by a 6 gal. per minute pump, belt-driven off the engine crankshaft.
"In order to connect the tractor trans-mission assembly to the truck rails, we used 1-in. steel plate. We made a new driveshaft from Oliver and Cadillac joints. We used the original Oliver tractor brakes on the tractor for turning. There are hydraulic brakes on the front which give us a third brake pedal.
"Our tructor burns approximately 2 1/ 4-gal. of fuel per hour pulling a 12-ft. disk harrow or an 8-ft. brush cutter.
"We painted the trucktor Oliver green with yellow trim. The front wheels are 750-20 GMC truck wheels and tires. The rear wheels are oversize 1200-38 Oliver tractor wheels and tires.
"This rig has performed exceptionally well for two years with no major problems. The approximate cost to build was $2,500."

I stopped buying John deere products in 1998. Last 3 tractors purchased in the 90's were junk. Over engineered and cheaply put together. They stayed in the shop more than the fields. Had enough. Never buy John deere again.

I had a truck kind of like this one. It was a one ton 4x4 with a wrecker bed on it. I built a three point hitch that was powered by the winch on the truck. It was a 1978 Chevy 454 4x4 with a 4 speed transmission and 4.30 gears it had a granny low and a hi/low transfer case which gave me a really,really low "double low", it would pull my 13 foot farmall disc with ease, it would also pull a 3 bottom breaking plow like there was nothing there. I used it mostly for discing, pulling the fertilizer spreader. and raking and moving hay. It was especially handy for fertilizer because I could drive it to the co-op for my fertilizer. It was also great for pulling a trailer full of steers to the auction. Having six really rough tires gave me traction rivaling a tractor and with the wrecker bed be it weighted close to 7000 lbs. In many ways it was more useful than any tractor I have ever owned.

The only way that old guy could have made it better was to provide AC in the cab. I'll bet he doesn't have any proprietary problems with John Deere, does he? Something to be said for old equipment that's not tied to a manufacturer trying to skim more off of it's customers.

48mph dam near 77km/h that thing moved for its age atleast it has the right steering style for that speed ive been in a situation where i had a run away on a hill getting pushed by my trailer in a fendt 712 found out the speedometer stops at 75km/h figure i got up to 90-95km/h by the time i lost it a automotive style steering system would have definitely gave me a fighting chance of keeping it on the road and on its tires as i could have started braking and counter if a tire locked up or something as it started picking up speed but i didn't dare do anything to risk moving the steering as i would never find center again since it was hydraulic steering

Wrong kid, must be your age 6-10, and your parents fail to supervise your internet trolls. That looked like grass hay from the year before. It over wintered in the field and they were moving it to make their first cutting. But since you don't have a clue, you're just being a smart mouth fool. Are your parents related, cousins or siblings?
@FarmAlarm
@FarmAlarm 4 жыл бұрын
@@Mr-Corey-June Well first I will address the age of the hay bale comment. I still stand firm that those bales have a good amount of age on them. We have had bales set around with at least 3 or more years on them, and they dont look like that. Old bales wilt like that, but just my opinion. Now to address the idiocy of the rest of your comment, Ha I have never been called a internet troll. LOL I guess there is a first for everything. I dont know your age, so I cant assume you are a kid, but I will say this generation of keyboard commando's yall sure know how to do some insulting. Not sure how I was being a Smart Mouth Fool, but I did enjoy how most of your reply had nothing to do with my comment, and rather had more to do with insulting me lol. But no worriies, i wasnt effected either way.

@@FarmAlarm Let me clue you in. On our family farm we would put in 300-500 round bales of alfalfa and clover bales every year along with square bales for more years than you are old. Now with the simple fact that you fail to know what a grass bale looks like after sitting in a field over winter uncovered and on into summer shows your infantile ignorance on hay. You weren't "effected" by my response? Liar, an old farmer nailed you between the eyes with your punk arse assumptions. You pulled a troll based on ignorance, grow up and learn boy, instead of shooting your mouth off out of boredom and ignorance.
