Semi-Truck Converted To Low-Cost Farm Tractor.

"With the price of grain the way it is, the average farmer can't justify spending the money on a 300-hp tractor. We built our own for much less and it works just as well as anything out of a factory," says Glen Oetken who helped his father, Gerald Oetken of Larned, Kan., convert a semi truck into a powerful farm tractor.
The completed rig weighs in at about 22,000 lbs., which Gerald figures is about right since he rates it at about 234 drawbar hp (325 flywheel hp). He regularly pulls a 32-ft. double-offset disk or a 38-ft. fallow plow with the tractor and it handles the big equipment with no problem.
The men started with a 1978 International 4300 which originally had a twin-screw rear end with a 325 hp 855 Cummins engine and 10-speed Fuller transmission. They cut the frame off behind the cab and spliced in a shorter home-built frame made from 12-in. channel iron. It's fitted with a rear-end from a 1950's Euclid earth scraper. Glen says the 100-ton rear end's 13:1 gear ratio matched up perfectly with the semi's 10-speed transmission. The only thing they had to do to match them up was to make a new driveshaft.
The semi tractor is fitted with single flotation tires up front -- "I think the mag wheels are a nice touch," says Glen -- and dual 20.8 by R42 tires on back. Making the duals was one of the most difficult parts of the whole project. They made wheel spacers out of 30-in. dia. natural gas pipe.
They fitted the tractor with the 4-spool hydraulic system off a 4-WD Versatile tractor. The semi did not originally have power steering so the hydraulics provide that also.
The Cummins engine was completely rebuilt and the Oetkens installed a dual governor to maintain steady rpm's in the field. Glen says the governor is the same unit found on any farm tractor with a Cummins engine but notes that it's an expensive component to buy new. "You can save a lot of money if you can find a used one. The governor holds the tractor at about 1,800 rpm's in the field," he says.
The tractor has forward speeds ranging from 1.5 mph in 1st gear to over 40 mph in 10th.
One of the most essential features of the truck-tractor is the air brake system. "We rigged up individual air brakes using the truck's original air system," notes Glen. "We can brake either side of the tractor individually or brake all four wheels at once. You have to be able to brake either side to make turns on headlands."
The completed tractor has a much shorter wheelbase than the original twin screw semi. It's about as long as a standard 2-WD tractor, which Glen and Gerald say makes it very maneuverable in the field.
One of the best things about the truck is the comfortable ride. Glen says no tractor can match the home-built tractor's air ride suspension and great view.

As a diesel & heavy equipment mechanic for 40 yrs I’ve been saying this for many yrs after hearing stories from local farmers who’ve been screwed over by John Deer just because they wanted to fix their own tractors and obviously the price of new tractors.. Hopefully more older trucks with good engines will start helping out the farmers.. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

The Russians have been doing this for years using large Army trucks , most of them have air cooled V8 or V12 diesels even though modern tractor can be bought spare parts are as close as the nearest Army salvage yard and they are 4 wheel drive .....................

converting older semi-trailer truck tractors to a farm tractor is an EXCELLENT idea!! old trailer trucks are much more prevalent and cheaper than large farm tractors. and it is clear that a trailer truck can perform as well as a tractor. being able to have a workable, safe, and comfortable "tractor" to do serious farm work for around $20k is MUCH smarter than spending $150k on a "regular" tractor.

it's pretty cool what you can do with old farm equipment and old trucks ,,i'm in my late 40s now and i have built a half dozen machines over the years and i know of a bunch more in my area ,,probably my best yet is my snow blower which is a monster ,, former truck snowblower that i rebuilt and have mounted on a TR96 combine ,,the blower is self powered and originally had a 454 chevrolet truck engine ,,i repowered it with a 5.9 liter cummins diesel , it'll clear 4 feet of snow at a steady 10mph and throw it nearly 100 feet ,,2 feet of snow i can run 22mph ,,,the coolest machine i have seen is a 15 ton forklift a neighbor built out of a semi tractor ,,it's literally a backwards truck ,,he built it for stacking round bales

I’m doing this with a 96 geo tracker on 33s 5speed all gear trans , and t case (factory) Used to be wicked woods wheeler 🤘 Started with a snow plow ran off the winch and two welded clevis blocks on frame rail to throw the pins in. Simple quick -works! Now I have a York rake on rear and going for forklift attachment for front lol just high enough (ran off same winch) . Also made a rear home made three point receiver hitch shaped like upsideown (two clevises) and 3 foot upright with pulley for cable to pull up and lift /lower the attachment. Works great!! And it’s all one pin receiver hitch can go on any truck with 2” receiver tube ,power is ran off secondary heavy gauge trailer bulk head plug. ✌️✌️ Love this idea u made it’s wicked and brilliantly simple 🤝 I might go full weld on suspension for the forklift tho on mine 😆😆💪

We are coming back to this era, Americans and there ingenuity always prevail. Great job Mc Giver. You have cherry picked the NEEDED TEC and left the rest to the mind of the operator. In turn dropped all the excess tec, which is costly to maintain or correct on failure to which it ALWAYS DOES, examples are the new farm equip, exotic cars. This machine will ware out not SHORT OUT WITH TEC.

Ita cool. As a commercial farmer I see a couple issues. The draw bar on a tractor is designed to pull down and wedge the machine into the ground for traction. Second I would ad that compaction in soft souls is an issue most farmers would rather not see happen, "tracking" in soft soils is a real issue we strive to mitigate while making second or multiple passes. Something that is mitigated by having larger and more tires up front on conventional articulating tractors. Thirdly, ground clearance is also something to consider. Residual materials are usually dry and flammable. With traditional tractors the engine oil pan itself is usually 3 to four feet off the ground mitigating most exposure to buildup and fire dangers around the manifold and turbo hot working parts. The frame work is open and off the ground. I should say this is a very out of the box idea worthy of a gold star no doubt.

If this tractor dates from the 1980's as I suspect, there were no two wheel drive tractors with even 1/2 this horse power available. To buy the biggest two wheel drive of the time, around 150hp would have been in the range of $80,000. To get this much horse power would have been one of the biggest 4 wheel drive tractors and cost in the area if $125,0000 - ten times what this man invested in this rig. This is a good build and a great investment of effort. Plus, that transmission is far superior to what the regular tractors had at the time.

Old tractors now were new tractors 30 or 40 years ago when this semi-tractor was built. And that was when big tractors were really starting to be built so not really an option. There were probably some 10 or 20ish year old ones at the time but with the inflation I'm guessing those were expensive too and they were also pretty new 30 years ago.
