Farm Aid

9 жыл бұрын

Steve Earle performs "Dixieland" at the Farm Aid concert in Seattle, Washington on September 18, 2004.
Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.
For more information about Farm Aid, visit: farmaid.org/youtube
Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help - what can you do?

"I am Kilrain from the 20th Maine And I damn all gentlemen Whose only wealth is their father's name And the sweat of the working man Well we come from the farms and the city streets And a hundred foreign lands Shed our blood in the battle's heat Now we're all Americans" That is one of the most patriotic damn verses ever written. Thank you, Steve Earle, for writing it. What a great song.

If you haven't read The Killer Angels, I highly recommend it. Kilrain is full of great lines like this. I was so disappointed when I found out he was the only entirely fictional character in the whole book, because I wanted to go learn everything I could about him. Also, as someone who had relatives in the Union Army who were recent German immigrants, as well as a 3rd great-grandfather who was just Canadian and joined a Maine regiment (not the 20th, sadly), I do love the "from a hundred foreign lands/Now we're all Americans" line so much.

I'm a songwriter and I really appreciate a historic, true story, told with humanity and relevance. Not sure how to put this but, it is clearly is, for lack of better phrasing, a song he believes in. I.e. aside from truth, there is an understanding and compassion there. I love also the obvious Irish flavor of the instrumental played on mandolin. COngruent, simple, elegant, and eloquent.

What are your sources for that number? Because, from what I can find only 258 Irish-Americans have earned the Medal of Honor, which it’s still the most out of any foreign nationality. That being said, most people forget that more Germans fought in the Civil War than Irish.

It's very much deep rooted in racism though, having originated in blackface minstrel shows. Plus the civil war was mostly fought over the legality of owning slaves so this song and to that extent southern american culture has its roots in racism.

@@ByJingo76 - need to learn true history. Name any other country that ended slavery by means of war? Abraham Lincoln was a tyrant and racist. During his famous debates with Sen. Stephen Douglas, Lincoln explained to the crowd: “I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races … I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.”
