Many people thought that DIY an aquarium combined with a greenhouse to grow aquatic vegetables is so hard. But with the careful and detailed guide from my father, you can easily make a unique aquarium and cheap greenhouse to plant organic aquatic vegetables at home.

He didn’t properly install a biological filtration system, so if you consider building a system like this do some research on aquaponics. These fish will surely die because of this oversight
@pb6839
@pb6839 Жыл бұрын
@@aaronstathatos6195 maybe the bio filter is hidden behind the wall, but it’s still kind-of a bad system. Looks pretty though. I thought about making a small system similar to this, but ammonia and ph levels are constant work to keep under control with this size.

Great idea! Although instead of Koi, I would use Tilapia or cat fish so that I could benefit from the fish as well.
@jonmoore1614
@jonmoore1614 Жыл бұрын
While I agree, I would also note that Tilapia and catfish both like very dark, somewhat deep water, so it wouldn't be as pretty for youtube. You can also eat aka koi (which is just a kind of Asian Carp!) although it may not taste awesome. Some argue that Tilapia is gross too, so Your Mileage May Vary.

Love the video!! Such a beautiful and functional design! Only thing I would add for myself is a drain with a screen so I could easily empty the tank at the end of season or maybe add a pond heater. Since where I live in the winter it would freeze. Also wish I could get bamboo that size and length without it costing me a fortune. May just have to try large potable pipe. Thank you for the amazing idea and great time lapse. Easy enough to follow.

Love this project. Great free hand skills. It looks fantastic and has a food producing function. I would put a filter in that system somewhere though. I had an aquaponics system of about 6000 ltrs plus. I made the mistake of keeping difficult fish. I also grew different veg. But lettuce was dead easy to grow. Had I made my fish section more ornamental I might still have it. Got me thinking of making something like this next to my gazebo. Thanks for sharing.

i dont understand why you need a filter as the plants are the filter@@princesstalisaysay7437
@roxane1237
@roxane1237 6 ай бұрын
@@princesstalisaysay7437 Most aquaponic systems have filters and two or three different aquariums for several reasons. Reason number one is that the required pH of the water for fish and for plants are not the same. Basically aquaponics is a question of balance between the water for the fish and water for the plants, it's quite difficult to get right so if you separate the waters it's easier to keep it working. Second is that the fish, roots, excrements, stones etc can clog the motor that is pumping up the water. In this video we only see the results after a month, also he is cultivating lettuce which is quite forgiving. After a while though the system might be too basic and there might be problems with too much nitrate in the water for the fish, or an overpopulation of fish. Also if you grow more complicated plants like tomatoes or watermelons, there is a chance that it won't work because the water might not have the right balance in nutrients. It's still a pretty cool video, but for more chance of succes you'll need to study all the technical parts. There are books for that but also other video's on youtube.

I like it but this will only work all year round in warmer climates, as in the winter in northern temperate areas you'll need a secondary filter in the winter. Maybe move the fish into a larger pond in the winter as the volume is on the small size / maybe around 500 ltrs. But the concept is great & will try something like this soon as I generally build my own ponds.

You should do one. The learning experience will be worth the cost by itself, and in the best of cases you'll have produce, worst of cases a failed project and no regrets of not trying. PVC is easier to clean as these systems require maintenance. Check out Bigelow Brook Farm (Web4Deb) youtube channel for cool functional aquaponics stuff and a look into the whole process. What's your budget? Less'go! Start building.

This aquarium / aquaponics greenhouse system would definitely work. I used to have a large aquarium and the fish can produce a LOT of waste (fertilizer) for the plants. The only thing I am curious about is if the number of plants growing above this fish tank is enough to keep it clean, or if the fish tank requires regular cleaning too. Also, I conditioned the water in my aquarium with micro-organisms / good bacteria before adding the fish so that they wouldn't be stressed and would remain healthy in the water. I wonder if they ran the water overnight over the plants in this aquarium to condition the water before adding the fish, and what type of concrete they used that would be safe for the fish. Also, how long did they cure the concrete so that it wouldn't leach toxins that would kill the fish? Very interesting setup here, but more detailed information about the setup would definitely be a big help for someone in replicating it.

Amazing, and looks great….most aquaponic systems are a bit of an eyesore with a bunch of mismatched dirty plastic bins, but can’t imagine any neighbors objecting to something so nice.

If any fertilizer or growing medium is used then it will definitely kill the fish. Hopefully his goal is to use the fish emulsion to fertilize.

I would like to see this a year or two later. The thin plastic foil on top and the sides is gonna say goodbye very soon, and I doubt that the concrete is waterproof.

This is so awesome gorgeous creative I only have two suggestions a plug to be able to drain the water out for cleaning and instead of goldfish using real fish that you can eat so that would make it much more profitable or productive. It really is beautiful. I am curious how the bottom ones in the back grow without sunlight is there some kind of lighting in there

Thank you for the video. Your craftman techniques are really awesome. One question: This system looks completely nice for plants, but I wonder how it is for fishes. There is not a explicit bed for nitrification bacteria. Roots of plants might work as the bed, but still the effect must be limited. I would like to have your view about this point.

Great idea. Just one question what type of wood did you use on the frame? Are you worried it will rot if left unprotected from the high moisture content?

@@sleddy01 that’s a sad thought considering the use of concrete and bricks, not so eco friendly I’d like to think they’d use it but stain the timber

I really like this idea! How long does the bamboo last? Does it need to have some kind of sealant applied so it doesn't rot too fast? Also, what is the plant that you chop and let float in the water, and why do you do that? Thank you!

I just read postings on one of the other videos, and it says the plants are banana leaves to adjust the pH of the water. I understand now! 👍 Still interested to know how long the bamboo will last without a sealant though.
