All I Want For Christmas Is A New Auger!

Eric and I own chicken houses that are several years old. Some days, it feels like all we do is fix things. It's not always an easy repair. We had a couple people visiting our farm to see our birds and how they were doing. While I was standing inside Eric's number 1 house talking to our Broiler Manager, the fill system auger broke. We haven't had a fill system auger break in years.
If you are not familiar with how chicken houses work, the fill system auger is an auger that runs underneath the feed bins on the outside of the house and goes inside the house. It is encased inside PVC pipe, and it is how the feed enters the house. From there, the feed goes into a hopper and then into the feed lines and feed pans (with additional augers).
When we went to pull the broken auger out to replace it, it would not budge. Something had that auger in a bind. We had to get creative to pull this one because there is not much room to work with. Luckily we got the auger pulled and a new one put in.

Definitely been a Wednesday for us too. You’re video is helping us fix ours that broke over the night. We usually have a maintenance guy that fix’s a lot of our stuff but he’s not here today. Thank you for the information!

Weld the broke piece back on turn auger around and put it back in

That’s what we usually do. This one had already broken once before this so we went with a new one.

We run some in Bowdon and Villa Rica been trying to get out into Ranburne but no land ever comes up. I’d love to come check out your place and watch/help next time you all are doing some AI.

It’s hard to come by land around here. We are always looking for additional pastures but usually don’t have much luck. We’ve got a group that if all goes well we will be artificially inseminating them this spring. If it all works out we’ll setup a day you can come visit if you want to. Eric had been trained for the AI. I’m hoping to be trained in March if the corona virus doesn’t postpone it again.

@@kaseybarrett3026 Sure will! The closest class I know of is usually every February/March. Haven’t heard if they are having it this year or not though.

I don't run anchor beairing on the fill system cut anger foot and a half to long put a piece of straight pipe over it . that allows it to float won't were pipes out so fast and they won't break as much

We’ve done that before but we run into problems if we have more than one feed bin open it can sometimes bog down the fill system motor. Do you ever have that happen?

We typically only run one at a time. Sometimes if we know a bin is going to run out in the middle of the night its nice to be able to open a second one.

Do the augers work on timer or do you have manually operate?

They will do either! Typically when I have baby chickens (under 2 weeks old) I set them up to feed periodically on a timer. Once the birds are 2 weeks + I usually leave the feed on full time. I have a controller inside each house that controls all that.

The fun of chicken farming. LOL. If you ever get in a bind you can always weld the auger together. Just overlap the coils where broken at about 2 coils and tac in place.

@@kevinward9733 haha oh yeah, there’s always something tearing up around here. Never a dull moment! We have welded them together in the past. This one broke right at an old weld so we decided to go ahead and put a new one in. Usually they don’t break in the day when the parts store is open. Lucked up on this one!
