Tractors have HIT THE FIELDS. We found an unexpected weather window and mowed some hay right on the home farm! Follow along with us as we see the main man on his 46th year of making hay. We go in depth in the drying process in northern Ohio, from the initial conditioning of the first mower pass, to a smooth, even tedding pass. Thanks for viewing!

Your Dad is right. You never get making hay out of your blood. I grew up on a farm in south east Ohio. Spent every summer making hay. I'm 54. Been away from the farm since I was 21. Miss it every day.

I cut hay for my neighbor that has beef cattle we live in central Minnesota. I know conditions are different in other areas. We would keep the wind rows tight. Let the field dry out then the next day go out and Ted the hay then the next day weather permitting be baling in the afternoon or the next day. But every one has their own way of hating. And all ways are very informational

We don't do much silage. I think in some conditions your route is very wise

Only the center-pivot mo/co's swing like that. If you get a mo/co 10' or under, they usually do not pivot. A very nice video!

Interesting fact that maximum moisture loss occurs for about 2 hours after cutting , can only imagine how good that silage would be !

Down at the cellular level the stomata close about 2 hrs after cutting . Moisture loss is slower after this time . Ideally tedder could be following mower , at a safe distance . You did explain that the weather was a bit uncertain .
@FarmingInsider

You really know your stuff! When making dry hay, not silage we like to see a decent amount of drying happen in the mower swath because then the tedder seems to spread more evenly.

Thought roller conditioners were for lucerne not grass,Tyne conditioners are for grass. Such a simple thing to get wrong As for expensive triple mower,if you have never used them,you would never know the fuel and time savings.What’s really expensive then?

@@FarmingInsider hmm There’s never a prefect machine for every application but teddering is definitely the solution to earning faster drying. Immediately after cutting since tomorrow’s weather isn’t guaranteed but teddering is. I use to crop with 30 kms to either sides coastline,showers would come in without warning on a hot day off the rain radar. I have even had it,I’m in one paddock while over the fence what was just mowed is now getting wet. All you can do is laugh!

Other then for chopping.......Ive never understood the reason for going back and forth cutting hay..... so much time wasted ! Cutting around the patch.......no stopping...and never slow down ! Its almost a 1/3 faster ! Then cutting hay with duals ? Come on...please. Hay dont dry much once its matted down. Milked cows for 45 yrs.....and switched to a disc bine 15 yrs ago. Nine foot disc bine....can move up to 20 miles per hour....other then making the turns. Wrapped hay now for the same time ...15 yrs...... always cut and bale the same day. Best hay you can have !
