Farrowing Huts - Farrowing Pastured Pigs Out On Pasture. Here is our design for farrowing huts for our pregnant gilts to nest in and give birth to some new pastured pigs.
This is similar to a design shown by Jordan Green in his videos • Farrowing gilts on pas... discussing his farrowing huts in his pastured pig operation.
These huts are built out of pressure treated materials which add heft and stability to the structure. These are for our first time pregnant gilts who we expect to farrow soon. They received semen doses obtained from Shipley Swine, www.shipleyswine.com/ , who we found to be extremely helpful in giving us advice on how to be successful at artificially inseminating our gilts.
We do not advocate for the use of farrowing crates but prefer to allow our pigs to give birth naturally and in an environment where they can move around and be more comfortable while caring for their piglets.
Our pastured pork comes from pastured pigs that are a mix of duroc, yorkshire and tamworth stock. They are hardy, well tempered and produce a premium pork product through a natural diet, being outdoors and allowed to forage for a portion of their diet.
Sheraton Park Farms practices holistic, sustainable farming and soil building using a rotational grazing model as we try to grow more grass on our farm.

I made some similar farrowing huts modeled after the Farm Builder . We have 2 huts and had about 12 litters run through them, worked great. Building 1 more this week! Have some sows and gilts coming due all at once, need some more room! Excellent video!

Do you have them get squashed against the sides of the shed? We made some similar but thinking they arent quite large enough ? When the pigs gave birth they would be too close to the wall and then the piglet would die in the sack as not much room for them to move.. thoughts?

Did this for years in the 80’s one shot farrowing in late spring, keep back gilts for the next year sell mama’s after weaning. One thing we learned early on was never mix piggy sows and piggy gilts.. made enough to payoff 80 acres in 11 years...
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting you should say that. We’ve discovered the same thing. When those new gilts (or even the sows sometimes) come into heat it’s like World War III. They fight, nip, bite and are super aggressive towards each other. Sage advice! Sounds like y’all had a nice operation. Appreciate y’all watching

@@SheratonParkFarms Thank You! Yes it’s sounds crazy but it’s kinda like the sows are jealous of the gilts we had them run off with the gilts piglets.. It is no good.heavy losses. I also use to make a 32’ x 32’ panel areas with holes cut for pigs to get with feeders I started feeding Moorman starter feed at 21 days. Stay Safe!

I know it's been a couple years since your comment. So if you don't see this, I wouldn't be surprised. BUT, on the off chance you DO see this, why don't you recommend sows and gilts being housed together beyond the obvious when babies get involved that the sow may be mean but I am curious to know if this means that when babies wean, if the sow can go back with my gilt? Or they need to be kept apart even after? What about the other gilt if she ends up bred here soon ? Once they have both became sows cold they then be together after babies are weaned of course? Thanks for tips!
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms Жыл бұрын
Yeah. She should be able to go in. We’ve actually change this a little and have had a new gilt in with older sows and it it went fine. Once everyone of bred they do chill out quite a bit. Those heat cycles drive them crazy. Thanks for watching.

Does it snow where you are? How do you keep the snow off the electric fence?
@jeremyring4643
@jeremyring4643 2 жыл бұрын
You don't really need to. But if it is concerning you or the fence is getting buried you can pick up each panel a bit off the ground and shake the fence after it snows. However, the fence will work fine with snow around it so long as enough of the fence is still above the snow so that the pigs can't jump it.

Build a couple of skids on the bottom so you can move it with the forks on the tractor. Also put a big Eye bolt in the back so you have something to hook a strap into to hold it on the forks. Just think about how you’ll love it around.

Would it need to be insulated if farrowing in winter?
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 4 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily, really depends on temp. Be sure to provide a lot of fresh hay and maybe a heat lamp if it were to be really cold, into the 20's. Also, putting some burlap or an old blanket or something over the front would help. Be sure to put the back or the sides in the direction of the prevailing winds on your farm and they should be fine.

@benharris4543
@benharris4543 Жыл бұрын
he said it's 66" deep at the base. My plan is to measure 66 from opposite corners along the long sides, snap a chalk line, and cut along that line. might need to trim off a bit of a triangle, but at least it'll be the proper depth and height.

We are in central NC. I've had a ton of folks ask us about selling piglets due to lots of new people jumping in. Our breeder got out of the business so we had to find a way to keep our farm in pigs so we decided to try AI and got super lucky first time out.

I don't think I would like be artificially inseminated. I'd add a larger over hang especially on the front and some plywood or tin perpendicular with the ground above the entrance if the pigs can still enter.
