So grateful for your transparency with the pigs... I just fulfilled a dream and bought small acreage 8/2022 ... these videos really help... I'm first generation farmer, that's funny to say in 2022... I hope to move on the land in next 6 months... thanks for the friendly advice 👍

Congratulations..im no one..just a passer by and was reading your comment.. You should take a moment..look in the mirror and hug your self...it takes great courage, and determination to step out on the road less traveled.. I'm right along with you.. I dont expect this endeavor to be easy..just kind of a new adjustment to my way of life..like having a family..you just kind of fall into a rhythm.. There is so much positive support in the farming community its unbelievable.. I actually feel like an idiot..as I've spent many years on this earth..deprived from this kind of spiritual nutrition ..and its been right under my face the entire time...makes me wonder what other important things have I missed out on.. My body, mind, and spirt is starved for.. ..i hope you may feel the power of attraction drawing you into your new way of life with confidence as you leave that dirty infected city life behind...or something like that..

It's crazy watching this 2 years later. All of the prices you mentioned are now literally doubled. I looked at pig panels today for $38 at Tractor Supply and the T Posts were $7 each. Thanks for the information. Your videos are a huge help.

Check Atwood's, normally way cheaper. T posts were 5.98 and hog panels were in the low 20s.

I grew up in the suburbs in Texas and my parents all grew up on a farm. Guess they had enough of that and moved to the city. Only connection I have was going back to east Texas to visit Uncles there. Now fast forward 35 years and I am the one who has moved to the country to go back to what was skipped. Thank you for the great videos! We are learning so much about how to raise live stock (pigs, longhorns, and chickens (meat and laying hens)). Subscribed!

You left out transportation cost. 1. How much is a trailer if you don’t already have one? 2. Do you have to contract the transportation if you don’t have the proper equipment? 3. Will the processor come and pick up the feeder pigs when they are ready to process? Also medical equipment cost was left out.

I don’t raise pigs or any other animal either. I just find your channel and ones like yours fascinating. It is something I would love to do one day but as of now it’s not feasible. I lost my husband of 39 years so I’m basically starting life over again. It sure had been a shocker bc I thought we would be together forever. But he had brain cancer and it was extremely aggressive and no amount of chemo nor radiation made any difference at all. It all started with a seizure one morning while he was in the shower. That’s when the mass was found on his brain. It’s been four years since his death. I’m 61 and he was 62 when diagnosed. I love your channel and your very good way of explaining everything. You’re very good at what you do! So, thanks for sharing.

QUESTION!! Great video! You have answered some of my questions. What I would like to know is, do you breed your own pigs? If not where do you buy the piglets? We are in mid-west Georgia. We are just learning the local laws and trying to figure out who will be our target consumer. Not sure who you are set up to sell too but would like to ask if you would give your opinion. Sell to local people? Or sell at a meat sale barn? Thanks for any advise!!!
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
First off, we do breed our own pigs via artificial insemination. Here is a video we did on the process: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aaxhZLqm0rLaomQ.html We were buying from another breeder but she is going to college this fall and gave up the business. Decided to start breeding on our own so we could control the genetics instead of being subject to whatever was for sale on craigslist. hahaha So we sell all direct to consumer. By the whole, half, or by the retail cut. I'll sell you an entire pig or a pack of pork chops. We do that to capture more of the food dollar the customer spends. Right now we primarily sell at farmers markets and right off the farm. We do sell a little to a small, custom grocery store here in town. Our competitive advantage is that we live within 2 hours of about 3 million people so we have a large market to tap in to. Nice (and hardest part) about selling direct to consumer is that it takes a little while to build up relationships and a bit of credibility with customers. Its easy for someone to pay $5 for a dozen eggs....not much of an investment. Its a different thing to ask them to pay $13.99 for a pound of bacon. They have to trust you and believe they are getting value for their food dollar but in the end, it is more profitable for the operation. Hope that helps a little bit.

Hello, I bought a speedrite 2000 energizer and wanted to know what type battery you are using with it? The specs for the energizer preferred battery is a deep cycle battery with the following specs. fast pulse - current 170 mA 170Ah and slow pulse 105 mA 105Ah. The deep-cycle seems expensive so what do you recommend that has worked for you?

Hey, how many piglets do you recommend in the starter pen ? I really enjoy your videos, very helpful. Thanks in advance

@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the size of you pen. If you are doing a 16x16, you can start with 8 or 9 but they'll need to move out pretty quick. Bigger pen, more piglets. Really Appreciate ya'll watching.

Are their any differences in leaf lard across the different breeds of pigs?
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Leaf lard in general should not have much flavor so in that respect, no there shouldn’t be any difference in breed. Different breeds of pigs put on fat at different rates so in terms of amount/production there should be differences among breeds.

What would be average annual cost for vet and medication per pig? Are there farrier costs to maintain hooves?
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
IN our experience, finding a vet that will care for a pig is almost impossible. There are no farrier costs.

At what heights do you set your wire for these feeders?
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Raise it up as they get taller. Try to aim for the wire to be about snout high. That seems to work out pretty good. Once they are trained, just make sure they can see it. Appreciate y'all watching.

@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on their size and how many you have. Right now I'm running 10 breeders. They get 5lbs each per day so 1 bag will last 1 day. Keep in mind a 50lb pig will eat more than a 300lb pig.

@SheratonParkFarms

We feed about 1100 lbs to get them to processing weight (325-350lbs). By the time they get there we have about $300 in feed costs per pig. Those are round numbers and May Barry just a little bit.

Sheraton Park Farms we just purchased 42 acres but a lot of it is wooded or partially wooded and wanting to do some type of small farming just for fun/maybe make a few bucks on the side eventually but can’t decide on what to do but figure we have the winter to figure it out. How bad is the smell for pasture pigs? Have a friend who raises like 6-8 but not in pasture and it’s pretty bad but they’re on concrete and not a huge area. I use to work in animal research and the pig guys always smelled like nothing would be able take that smell away haha. I worked in poultry, so know everything about raising layers and broilers but don’t feel like messing with chickens anymore and seems like a lot of people do that on small scale.
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Frankly if you keep them on a good size area and move them regularly there is very little smell and that’s primarily if it stays wet for a while. I’ve never felt like our stink. The truck is spreading that Maddie out over a large area and not concentrating it. Pigs can be quite profitable (video coming up on some numbers) and we’ve found them to be a pretty low labor input with a strong ROI. I think you’ll love them!
