Really interesting observations. I'm in Australia and at one point really enjoyed buying from the cheap and cheerful British clothing website Asos until I found myself not reaching for these clothes anymore because of their cheap synthetic fibres and how they made me feel physically and psychologically. Australian labels use a lot of natural fabrics like cotton, linen, rayon and merino wool probably because these fibres are not only sourced locally but the humidity requires it. I'll take the timeless Swiss style over cheap and cheerful always. Sustainability rules!

I love a long lasting, coordinated, curated, high quality, modest ward robe. I'll take it any day over trendy fashion that comes and goes.

Winter winter hasn’t started yet in London until this week… so that’s why it’s cropped jackets… now you’ll see longer ones every where and puffer ones.

I am a native north London girl and I’d say the style there is more like Swiss style, very timeless chic , girls are more natural and modest. The girls I grew up around and know now from there are all quite alike in that way ❤

you are so right. WHY would I buy a synthetic poly mix jumper at H&M for 100chf if I can find a good quality 100% Merino Wool for 150chf somewhere else.... I love that we don't blindly follow trends in Switzerland.

I deeply agree about dressing as per feeling of "appropriateness." When I'm in my city of origin (Belgrade, Serbia), I dress completely differently to what I wear when I am in the UK. Even when it comes to business wear - London office wear is much more trendy, casual, eye-catching; while half of that would be fully frowned upon in Belgrade. It's a palpable difference, but neither good nor bad. Love the way you described your experience, btw! Also, I remember you filming some of the first videos with your phone... but then you switched to a camera, right? Or am I being silly? This video is super good quality, although a bit softer than usual - either light or resolution wise.

Being from the US, I didn't know how much I would be able to relate / takeaway from this, but actually really did! I think you did well to frame these differences outside of the locations but into actual themes that can apply anywhere.

Firstly, loved your channel for a while now! I’m from the UK, so just adding my opinion. As you’ve said, London is so big and so diverse. I think you’ve experienced a very specific kind of culture which is sadly not representative of all the unique fashion that can be seen on the streets here. The areas that you’ve visited like Chelsea, Kensington etc will attract quite a specific niche of people who are more likely to be concerned with things like status, looking trendy and being beautiful. They are attracted to those areas because this reinforces their self image. No shade on those people at all, it’s just a question of taste! If you spend time in North or East London, you’d likely see a lot more swiss-leaning style. I hope you get the chance to come back again and would recommend Bristol or Manchester to see some different British fashion :)

Hey Naja, thanks for the interesting video! I am myself familiar with both cities and can really relate to your reflections about them, especially in Switzerland having to "invest" in long term pieces as there are almost now cheap high street options in Switzerland which has forced me to think about my purchases a lot more. I do enjoy though getting to travel to other cities and embracing dressing differently for the occasion and to fit it! :)

Really interesting video Naja! You’re so right about what we think we like vs what is acceptable to like - when I moved to Australia from the UK my style changed a lot and I wore things I never would have considered at home. I also agree that the UK/London is a lot more casual than other big cities, it’s something I’ve noticed over the past few years and I’m not sure how I feel about it! Part of me is jealous of how comfortable people look compared to my going out uni days in early 2010s, and part of me thinks they look a mess 🫣😂 I hope you had a great time and thanks for another detailed video x

I'm honestly really coming to appreciate the conservative style to an extent because it's understated, polished and not so "in your face" or boring. Living in the US, you're basically exposed to too much. People my age are starting to wear whatever matches how they feel, which is becoming more and more stereotypical in my opinion (ie. leggings, a large sweater and sneakers). No one here really knows how to dress themselves, though sometimes, I will come across a couple women here and there who really do have a good sense of style. Thanks for sharing your own views and experiences! 😊

Very interesting breakdown! I’m from California, living in Cambridge, UK. I feel like UK girls wear a LOT of makeup by comparison. Also, Cambridge peeps dress very casually compared to where I lived before (San Francisco Bay Area), but it’s also like 10x smaller of a city. I also think you have to dress a bit more practically here because of the weather. So example my fancy suede shoes won’t work in the rain. I don’t like the long pointy manicure look they do here. It’s not for me.

I live in france, and everytime i come to paris i feel underdressed… and i feel overdressed even with really simple clothes in other places! I agree with the cheap options that make us want to be more trendy also, i can see how it’s related!

I've lived in London for nearly 20 years and people have got a lot more sloppier in how they dress over that time. Especially in the workplace. But I agree a lot of it is probably to do with expendable income getting worse in the UK.

I split my time between East Germany (where I attend grad school) and Zurich (where my boyfriend lives) and if I'm not wearing my YSL bag whenever I go outside I feel like such a bum haha. In East Germany, it's of course the complete opposite. In a way, my bf prefers my city in Germany (he is East German) because it's more of a chill vibe, there isn't the feeling to always be wearing something expensive. I agree, Zurich style isn't as focused on the trends, but it is focused on showing wealth, to a certain extent. People understand that it's tacky to be covered head to toe in logos for sure, but they know to have exactly the right balance.

Hi Naja, first of all, great video, good quality, and the sound was fine :) secondly, honestly I've been to Switzerland twice, so I dont know anything about the country and the style there,; I lived in London for a few months years ago, but I also follow a few British influencers. I agree with the points you made. Maybe because the prizes are lower in the UK, people buy more stuff and then end up throwing it away? I might be wrong, but I read somewhere that the UK is one of the leading counties in textile waste in Europe. Maybe it's good that Switzerland doesn't have cheap/low quality options therefore staying more sustainable as you mentioned? I personally think it's better if you wear your good coat for 10 years than buying a new one every season... im not saying trends are bad but it can go very wrong very quickly. And the beauty industry... when I see a 20 something year old girl who gets fillers and botox I cringe - but I feel this is a standard now. Enjoy the holiday season! :)

I would say that while London seems more "trendy" to you I would say it has more to do with a larger (10 million more people) and more diverse population. Zurich is still driven by the financial industry and you are living in one of the most homogenous cities in the world. I think you would find difference true when comparing Zurich to most large cosmopolitan cities.

The stereotype of women from Switzerland is that they are beautiful. You talked about all body types being more acceptable in England which does not have the stereotype of all the women there being beautiful. Makes you think. Being “accepted” supposedly doesn’t necessarily mean it’s reality.

This is interesting. I was in London & Belgium this summer & maybe I'm just unobservant, but it seems fashion is so deeply personal as I saw a range of styles of all ages- simple basics & trends being worn. I personally do not pay attention to the details as price, quality, or branding of what others wear Bec it's simply not important to me. It is quite sad that people are trying so desperately to "keep up" constantly. You can really go down a rabbit hole with fashion, style & beauty. Why not just curate your own style without concern for social approval at all times?

Keep models skinny and beautiful, women should strive to be healthy, fit and beautiful!!! Here in America they have fallen for all that and the standard of beauty has really gone to the ground.
@AthalieM
@AthalieM 8 ай бұрын
Being 5'10 and 110 pounds is quite rare. Even as thin as models may naturally be, what you see in ads and on runways is often their natural thinness taken to an extreme. Anyway, I'd rather spend my time working to be smart, kind, and interesting and embody the health and beauty that fits me best personally than "strive" to be someone else's frankly stupid beauty standard.
@homerrules100
@homerrules100 8 ай бұрын
@@AthalieM I agree with you. Healthy should always be the goal when it comes to our bodies and minds. Words like skinny which have the dictionary definition of emaciated and lacking flesh should not be aspirational. As the world integrates fully both in RL and digitally we see all sorts of bodies that are healthy but may not photograph the way we are use to seeing. And as you so well said, the appearance of our physical bodies is not as important as other attributes, like compassion for people that dont fit your standard of beauty.

I agree today's standards are too fake and superficial, but if you are a model on tv selling an image, its a job u should be the part. As a heavy set woman of 5'4, trying to lose weight and be healthy i find it perturbing and not encouraging to see all these morbidly over weight models they like to display nowadays on ads. Its so disrespectful when i know the health risks behind that facade. In my opinion nothing beautiful about it. But yes there are different body types and styles, i guess what i mean is like you aim to be your best your healthiest. But i admire gorgeous models and they motivate me even if i know ill never be 100lbs and 6ft tall lol
@NataschaO
@NataschaO 8 ай бұрын
As far as I know, many working models are neither particularly fit nor healthy. They are naturally thin, but usually get pressured to become even thinner in order to get work, leading to all kinds of dodgy behaviors. I agree though, the "body positivity" trend has gone very wrong. While it would help women to see average (slim, but not runway model skinny) bodies in fashion and advertisement, presenting overweight bodies as healthy and beautiful is misleading. I think we need to see more diversity in fashion, but in the sense of different body types, not different stages of starvation or obesity.
