Saw the Martian before reading it and I loved both formats but I'm glad I did it in that order. The book elaborates a lot on Watney's ideas and emotional state whilst almost always maintaining that underlying banter. That's the only Weir I've read but you've convinced me to keep reading more of his books with your Project Hail Mary overview.

If you are in for an even better treat for Dungeon Crawler Carl and Jeff as the already incredible audiobooks on audible (and I'm normally rather the letter reader than the audio hearer), on the Soundbooth theater platform currently the first book is revisioned with completely updated narration, a full cast (though Jeff maintaines the most iconic roles), and sound effects. Even if you listened to the audible, I find it a treat. Currently the first book is made available, if enough support is shown, this series continues.

I started Dungeon Crawler Carl a few weeks ago and I'm on Audiobook 4. I'm TEARING through these. I'm usually not a huge fan of LitRPGs due to how the game aspects are largely implemented but I love how they do it here. Not too many Stats/Game Mechanics (it feels more like a real world with game flare. No damage numbers even if they have other aspects and stuff like that.) It's just fun, funny and some of the serious moments really get to me, and I love it.

As another recommendation, how about the Vorkosigan series, starting with The Warrior's Apprentice? (Ok there's debate over which to start with, but that's where I began.) I've had to learn to be careful when choosing to pick one up for a re-read, because I instantly get sucked back in and am forced to re-read all my favorite books in the series back-to-back. Those books are dangerous. 😂

I love the "Alex Verus" stories by Benedict Jacka. There are ten shortish books in this finished series, and they follow the career of the London-based wizard Alex Verus. The fast pace, action level, and first person narration are quite reminiscent of The Dresden Files, but there's a lot of soul-searching about the nature of wizard society and how all that magical power should be used (Jacka was a philosophy major at Cambridge, so, yeah. A bit dark.) The angsty protagonist has become one of my favorite characters in fantasy. The first book in the series is called "Fated."

Dresden Files by Jim Butcher should absolutely fit into this category! The writing style of the urban fantasy is fast paced and engaging, but the most binge-worthy thing is that every book seems to get better whilst continuing to develop the world and characters. It starts small in scale and grows from there, so rather than being dumped into an epic and forced to learn 100 characters you start with one man and a first person POV - the titular wizard detective Harry Dresden - and the world slowly builds up around him. Truly binge-worthy because every book draws you further into the world and makes you care more about the characters that it gradually layers into Harry's life. But never at any point getting flabby and losing the economy of style. Plus there are 18 books so far! I was ordering two at a time as I was reading them because I was getting through them so fast and didn't want to left waiting for my next instalment. Another suggestion would be Rivers Of London by Ben Aaronovitch (Midnight Riot in the US). Really well written London-based urban fantasy again with a fast-paced first person POV. This centers around Peter Grant, a young policeman who becomes an apprentice wizard in the Met Police's special magicial division.

Definitely need to check some of these books out. Heard too many good things from different people to not be interested. After Stormlight 5. I've done the math, and to read (most of) the Cosmere, its 32 pages a day until Dec. 5th. (not counting 3 of the Secret Projects, or White Sand the graphic novel) That's my goal for reading this year. Everything in the Cosmere is new to me other than the SA books. (if I dont re-read SA, its 18 pages a day, which is crazy since that's only 4 books).

I'd recommend The Rampart Trilogy by M R Carey. (The Book of Koli, The Trials of Koli, The Fall of Koli) really good apocalyptic sci fi book set in the not too distant future where an attempt to curtail climate change backfired leaving not many humans left resorting to an archaic way of life but the remnants of future technology are still around. An easy read, not too heavy on the sci fi elements, seems plausable and some great characters.

If you like old fiction than I'd actually suggest Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Just note that they are dated what I mean by that is that due to current social standards and climents, some may claim that they are racist or sexist. I understand why, however, one must remind oneself that they are over 100 YEARS OLD. That said villains of EVERY "RACE" are described as physically so. On the flip side allies of every "race" are described as physically appearing good and with strength. Another issue with the series is that Tarzan is kind of a Mary Sue and those are just a couple of problems with the series. That said one they are my "guilty pleasure" as I read them a lot as a kid. And second and probably most importantly is that these stories are essentially if they had been written today fit right in with comic books they are literally just meant to be fun and fast paced adventure stories. I hope that you read a few of them C.I.W.

How far in to the book did you get? About half way through there is a “reveal” that completely changes the game. If you didn’t make it that far, I strongly recommend giving it a second go
