More movie reviews sounds great to me. Reading books is not my thing so I really like how you gave us this comparison between the book and the movie, it was really interesting to hear.

I assure you Sean, there is nothing stupid about reading an entire book and being proud of it. I was raised to absolutely detest reading in any manifestation. School made it unpleasant, family made it a terrible chore and of course 'John Steinbeck' in highschool. It wasn't until I was introduced to 'Neil Gaimen' that reading became a wonderful activity.

I loved this movie, I think this is gonna be my next book series after I work my way through most of Brandon Sandersons books

Villenueve has said that he wants to do part 2 as the second half of Dune and then he wants a third film for Dune Messiah (the second book) to “complete Paul’s journey” or something to that effect.

As a student with a " _slight_ " knowledge in film visuals who just watched this movie a couple hours ago, the cinematography was beautiful, the best I've seen so far. My favorite shots are the one's that show huge landscapes for the worldbuilding, and the one's that use framing where the characters take up a small percentage of the screen.

This has become less of a gaming channel and more of “Shaun does whatever the fuck he wants” channel, but I’m not complaining it certainly works well and it’s fun seeing what new thing he’s doing in each video that comes out.

My opinion without reading the book: the movie made sense to me it felt like there was information missing but all the story flowed really well in my opinion.

I went into the cinema without reading a book and knowing anything about Dune, and it really felt like watching a book unfold. The pace seemed slow and fast at the same time. Like, a lot of happened, but at the same time there were so many long shots were you just got to take in the scene and the music, the whole vibe. One of the main questions I had after viewing was "is Paul actually the chosen one". The proficy thing and bene gesserit angle got me confused. But overall the movie was a spectacle. I enjoyed being taken on a long ride without immediate answers and conclusive action scenes.

I love how Jack has a better understanding of the production of movies, such as knowing the right actors, and having knowledge of lighting and sound. He also has many valid points supporting his opinions on just about everything, and as someone who has read the book as well as watched the movie, I can say that it’s hard to describe the book without spoilers, yet Jack did such an amazing job. I think that Jack would do really well reviewing open world movies such as Avatar, due to his deeper, more complex understanding of landscapes and lighting. I was especially impressed by how he realized the amazing quality of the sound, a feature that is often overlooked in a movie. If you’ve read the book and watched the movie, you know that the story in the book is much deeper, complex, and stretched out compared to the movie so far, for understandable reasons. But the creation of the movie was so amazing, and listening to Jack dissect this with such a deep understanding is so intriguing. For someone who claims to be dumb in so many of his videos, your intelligence is truly outstanding! You just specialize in different, unique subjects, and that’s a good thing. That’s what makes you so unique and entertaining! Great job, Jack, and I hope to see more content like this in the future!

"The Fellowship of the Ring" was the first book I ever read. "Dune" was the first one I finished.

I was so impressed with what they were able to do. They got very close to the same feeling even though they missed pieces. My husband read the books before our relationship and got me into it, so this was a big thing to both of us. Side note. You reviewing things is very welcome, we like to hear what you think. It opens the conversation for us, too, and that's always nice.

As a person who watched without reading the book, I thought that the pacing was really good. The story beats were interesting and the sound design was phenomenal. I will say at some points some parts felt a bit rushed, but overall I'm really hopeful for the future of this series. It will hopefully become one of my favorites and I want to actually read the book now!!

This is in response to jacks worries about the second movie. ‘Dune Messiah’ the second book is only like 100 ish pages long. It was originally going to be part of the first dune novel as like the fourth part, but Frank Herbert felt that it was going for too long so last minute he decided to make it a seperate novel all together. The second novel was written kind of as an epilogue to the events in the first dune novel. I can understand why Denis has chosen to do this because Dune messiah further explores key ideas that the first book brushes over. I think it’ll work well. Let’s just cross our fingers that it turns out amazing.

I was told people we’re upset Piter didn’t get enough time to shine and be all evil, then I read the book and was like “wait that’s it? He never does anything, just talks smack to the Baron a few times and acts menacing”

As someone who really doesn’t know anything about Dune, I absolutely loved the movie! I didn’t feel lost and I felt like the movie was amazing, so good. *chef’s kiss*

As someone who knew incredibly little about DUNE going into the movie, I thought it was a modern masterpiece. Villeneuve is one of the best directors working today (Blade Runner 2049 is one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time), and given the amount of information he had to throw at us, I was able to absorb it pretty well. Casting was perfect, story was engaging, set design and makeup were RIDICULOUSLY good, action set pieces were appropriately intense, and the whole universe felt very "lived-in," like the characters had definitely dwelt in these circumstances for centuries. The pace was a little slow at times, but nothing I couldn't handle. He's also set up a great deal of intrigue for part 2, and I for one can't wait.

Please do another one!!!! Part 2!!!

When Jack posts is when it's a good time.

My favorite scene was easily when the spice crawler was eaten. The music combined with the shear power of the worm makes you know immediately why these things are revered as gods. They could never show another worm for the whole movie and you would still see them as a force to be reckoned with. It’s a good scene.

I saw an interview with Hans Zimmer and he said they considered making Dune in theaters and Dune on streaming (HBO Max) slightly different because the home audio versus theater audio wouldn’t register the same. But they ran out of time to make it happen. Neat stuff! Great work Sean! I enjoy this type of content a lot!!

Jack, we need a part 2 review!!!

It was funny being in the theatre and seeing who had previously read the book and who didn't. In the scene where Stilgar spits in front of Leto and the others and they do to, about half of the theatre laughed. The other half though (including myself) were just geeking out at the ultimate expression of respect that had just happened... Edit: I was really sad that they completely left the Navigators' Guild out of the movie (spoilers for the books btw, don't read on if you haven't read them yet).. The backstory of the Navigators is probably my favourite part of the books, their absolute influence in the universe and just their appearance is AWESOME. And the way the whole Empirium depends on them and they basically control everything cause without them all travel is impossible, it's just cool. Everything about them is cool.

The Lord of the Rings movies are proof that you CAN and SHOULD omit some stuff from the books when doing a movie adaptation.

I think that the pacing was a great adaptation of the book. Keeping a lot of that extra context from Herbert allows the director to keep suspenseful scenes in his pocket. That way the climatic scenes in the second half have a harder impact in Dune:part two. I agree that the movie was really beautiful tho.

Just went and saw dune the two days ago and afterwords I immediately bought the books and have already finished book one in that book. Phenomenal world building and great story telling. Super excited to continue reading

Dune was amazing I don’t care what anyone says. Dune is like the lord of the rings. You can’t fit everything in one movie. That was the worst thing about the original. They tried to cram the entire first book into one movie. So this new dune is part one of two for book one. A remastering of sorts. A revival of a dead franchise is one of the best things. There are so many little details and there are reasons for everything that happens. I personally feel like If you don’t have a good prejudice of the series then you won’t fully appreciate it. There is so much history and world building as jack said. I recommend it to everyone who is even remotely interested. There are excellent summary’s of the original book I encourage it for sure

Saw it in theaters without reading the books beforehand, and the pace was perfect. I couldn't even leave my chair to get a drink refill, it was so captivating!

I liked hearing Sean review this movie. I've seen this one, I've seen the movie from the '80s, and I saw parts of the show but I haven't read the book yet. After this I definitely want to read it-well after this and watching the new movie-and I would love to hear Sean review other movies. The thing that was funny about this was that he kept saying that the pace of the movie was so fast, but while I was watching it one of the things I enjoyed most was the pace and How slow I felt it was. I guess not knowing the much about the internal monologue of the characters really takes away from the development but if I'm looking at the movie as a unit in and of itself, the pacing really allowed me to just slow down and appreciate the grand scape of the environment being created, the world building. I also like to getting to see the subtleties of how the characters interacted with one another instead of having super forced and rushed conversations. Like it felt as though every conversation had gravitas and was impactful beyond the immediate conversation even into revealing the heart of each character. To go to Sean's point earlier about Jessica crying and freaking out and how that was all supposed to be internal I just want to point out I think the movie did a really great job of separating that raw vulnerability even if they weren't able to portray that it was her internal emotional state. If you notice, she's only incredibly emotional when she's by herself. Every other scene where you see her with someone else she is calm and collected. The closest she gets to being visibly upset in the presence of others is when Paul is about to be tortured, her voice trembles that she's talking to her "mother superior" figure. The second time is when she and Paul discover that her husband the Duke is dead and Paul is unraveling in front of her.

I actually really liked this. I wouldn't mind seeing Sean review more books and/or movies. This was a lot of fun. I read the book 10+ years ago and this made me want to read it again.

Well to be fair, I've seen The Green Mile loads of time as the movie. Then I finally was able to get the book and read it. There is SO much more in the book. However, I think the movie was still amazing. Same with LoTR. Some books are so good but have so much information that adapting every single tiny detail is impossible, but if done right, can be outstanding.

As someone who has never read the book, I loved this movie. Some stuff flew over my head, but I had it explained by some people. What makes me love this movie is the sheer quality and scale of it. I also watched it in IMAX, so when the Harkaanens attacked all of a sudden I was just amazed. When the sand worm popped up and we finally got to see it, my jaw dropped. Combine that with the amazing sound quality and music, I loved this movie. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I just finished watching dune yesterday! As someone who didn't read the book, I think it was a phenomenal movie. To me, the pacing was neither slow nor fast, and I did grasp enough about what was going on. It was really enjoyable. I can't wait for the next part! Maybe I'll read the book 🤔

I'll be honest- Went in and saw the movie just a few hours ago without having ever read the books. I felt as though they established a *lot* of information very quickly in the beginning. Now, I don't know *why* the empire exists or how it got there or the full scope of the Bene Gesserits or the factions, but I had enough information that it felt like a good cold open- I had enough information to keep up even if I didn't have the active history of everything behind it. The pacing itself was... Interesting, in a good way. It felt slow?- there was a lot of talking, but the talking itself was a) framed gorgeously most of the time and b) genuinely interesting because it never felt like it went on *too* too long, which I think is an amazing feat. At the same time though, there were *moments* where it would get very fast, but it was only when necessary. I also managed to keep up with recognizing faces? Despite all the characters- I can't remember names for me with most movies/shows without subtitles anyways and *obviously* there weren't subs on in the theater, so I.. Don't remember most names tbqh but I got the gist of everything with faces/uniforms/vibes etc. I'm extremely invested in seeing how the movies unfold, if I'm being honest. I love(d) reading but I just don't have the time or patience for it, but the world building that's been set up is just... absolutely amazing. The only cons I have with it are minor and not ones that I say ruin the movie, more so just me noticing some less than exciting tropes and maybe slightly problematic (but likely unintentional) undertones, and that may have been in part the way the book was written as well, as old as it is. Overall, the movie was a 7/10 for me but definitely capable of getting up to a 9/10 once I get the context of the following installments.

As someone who hasn't read the book: dune is an example of absolute phenomenal choice in what to present to the viewer, and a great example of show, don't tell, imo. Yes, there are things that are missing in regards to world building, but missing that information never harmed the narrative, whereas getting bogged down in details and explaining things would've harmed the pacing. I actually misunderstood how mentats and the voice both worked as i was watching the movie, but i understood enough to move the story along, and i never had a moment like "oh they're having this conversation in order to explain such and such to the viewer", like i do in so many other movies. It all just made me really interested to learn more about the world and read the book myself

The sound was exactly why I loved the movie, the music was so entrancing and ethereal and it produced deep visceral feelings in me, it was so amazing. I kept thinking that Sean would love this sound production haha I thought the movie portrayed the intensity of the culture so well and that was so amazing to feel and see it in IMax. Keep it up Sean! love to hear your thoughts and reviews on this variety channel haha

As someone who didn’t read the book this kind of felt like the “setup: the movie” It felt so much like the purpose of this movie was just to set up everything and it kind of hurt my perception. Can’t wait for part 2 though!!!

I watched it in the cinema three weeks ago, came out absolutely mindblown, read the book, loved it, went back and watched it in the cinema again today, loved it even more.

I watched the hobbit back when the movies were still coming out, and I never read the book prior. A couple of years after the last part of the Hobbit series came out, I finally read it, and it was so odd seeing bits and scenes that weren’t in the movie so it was kinda like “what’s this?” But overall I do have to say I enjoy seeing movies first to get a feel for the characters and the environments that the story is set in.

I never read the book and this movie is in my top 5 actors fit their role so well. Not reading the book made it confusing at first but after I let it sit for a min I started to understand. And I also think they did a good thing with the cliffhanger they left us on makes me want to see the second part.

I loved watching your take on Dune, both the movie and the book! I've never read the novels, but did watch the first adaptation when I was younger, so the universe is familiar to me. I really loved the scene when the ships come riding out of the water as they leave Caladan. That was such a cool visual in the movie.

We saw it with Dobly Cinema, where the sound blasts at certain pints and the seats shake. I LOVED what they did with the voice in that theater, it was so impactful it FELT like you were being compelled as well
