While working on our $1000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Project, we had to swap in a new transmission, and the linkage didn't match up with the transmission after install. Our adjustor was so greasy and dirty, it was nearly impossible to tell how it worked so we thought we'd make this video for any of you who are struggling with adjusting the shift linkage on your own 5.2 ZJ Grand Cherokees. It turns out to be pretty simple so watch this quick 2 minute tutorial and you'll see exactly how its done!

I have a 2000 and my cable is also putting my transmission in the wrong gear , the cable is different for a 2000 , how can I adjust it

Thanks for a great video. I have a 2004 that just had a new cable installed. The gears did not line up with the shifter. When we adjust the cable at the shifter so that everything lines up, we have trouble starting in park. It cannot seem to be properly adjusted at the shifter. Do you think it would make any difference adjusting it at the cable as you have shown?

Yes! It should be exactly what you're looking for. Cables stretch as they get older and no two are exactly alike, so most likely your nice new solid cable isn't lining up where the old cable did. The factory method is to adjust the shifter to the transmission via the cable adjustment shown in the video. Good luck!

As far as we know the throttle cable (as opposed to the throttle valve cable) is non-adjustable. If it gets stretched out it has to be replaced. Thanks for the question!

How do I change the speed mine shifts when I drive it goes 1 2 3 way too fast my camaro was doing this but it has the vacuum module so I can adjust how do I adjust on a grand cherokee 5.2

You need to adjust your kick down cable. We don’t have a video on that but if you search KZfaq there’s a few good ones on how to do it. It’s pretty simple and the 5.2 especially, in our experience, is really touchy about having the cable right. Good luck and thanks for the question!

I would like to know if you could help me with my 97 ZJ 4.0 , it only drive on The 2, when I put it in D it won't move as well. Please can you help me fix it? @@MotorsandMischief

Put keep in park Pop the clip Push the transmission lever all the way back Push the shifter all the way into park Push the clip back on after its adjusted Is that about right?

Almost. Pop the clip, push the transmission lever all the way back (lowest gear), push the shifter on the side of the transmission all the way *back*, connect the linkage to the transmission, and then shift to park. When you shift to park the linkage will pull the transmission back into park, and that's when you check to see if it starts. So you got it almost perfect except step 4 should be Push the shifter (on the transmission) all the way back (park is forward). Hope that makes sense. Thanks so much for commenting!

Ther is a different cable on certain 2003,2004 grand cherokee Laredo models that is nearly impossible to find. The transmission mount is an open horseshoe shape with spring fingers to retain the "barrel". Same part number but last two letters are AG rather than AD. ( 52104060AG) There doesn't appear to be an adjustment on that cable. Again, EBAY SEEMS TO BE YOUR ONLY HOPE!

Man I wish I could tell you the answer cause that would mean I had a 5.9. I sadly do not have a 5.9. I would assume it uses the same adjuster for the 46RE in the 5.9, but by your question I'm guessing that's not the case. Sorry we couldn't help!

Hey Thomas! So we're not 100% sure what you're asking, so if we answer wrong, reply and let us know and we'll be happy to help some more if you give us some more info. The clip is not available as a stand alone part, thus it doesn't have a name or part number from Jeep. It's part of the shift cable itself, MOPAR part number 52104095. If you need the clip itself, your options are a new one on eBay, or a local pick-your-part where you can scavenge the clip off a wrecked ZJ. We've added a link in the description to a new cable on eBay if you'd like to check that out. It will come with a new clip. Let us know if that's not what you meant!!
