I'm an American whose half Puerto Rican and half Italian. Growing up I never bothered to really listen to Caribbean music because I felt that I wouldn't be accepted. Now I'm 25 years old, I want to be happy, I want to be a part of the community. I'm embracing Caribbean music from Trinidad and Tobago to Jamaica to Haiti etc. and so far, it's wonderful.

I am soooo happy my parents are from Guyana and because of that I grew up listening to calypso. This music is so up lifting and can change your mood for the better. I have long Cpvod meaning chronic inflammation is giving me pained shoulders and being exhausted.. but Soca and other Caribbean music is my medicine to pick me up and get me through until I get better. Th quality is really good. I'm from the US mainland and Caribbean music ought to get more play there. Some is a tad obsessively focused on da boonkie but whatever still upbeat.

I love how in soca everybody is credited in the descprition of the videos. In other genres the only person credited is the director and the artist. All down to the transportation services is credited here. I respect that.

As much as i dont like Machel Montano sometimes, a lot of other soca artists can learn from the way he promotes his music and brand from the way he releases music on his own youtube channel to the hype he puts out around his work. If i was a soca artist from any caribbean island or around the world i would be studying Machel and taking tips. Sometimes we forget that this guy is in the industry for 31 years and he is in his early/mid 40's.

I agree with you Akil and him being in the industry for 31 years got me thinking about his contribution to our society in terms of giving back. How come he has not yet taken a young person under his wings to groom and develop them music-wise or even opened a school or something to teach young people music. Just a thought....

I like your reponses. I grew up listen to Machel since he was a kid. Though I love his music the last couple of videos seems to be void of the differing shades of women in Trinidad. There is beauty all over Trinidad in all the different shades. Lately he seems to be following the dyfunctional genes of Black American videos. Colorism gone mad!
