Now that my puppy is almost a year old, I'm seeing the payoff for all that time I've spent reinforcing him lying quietly near me. Last night when I was cooking, he stayed on his place (and I periodically told him how good he was and tossed him bits of cheddar cheese) for over 45 minutes and then went back to his place for more cheese. When I was done we had a party with a cheese scatter! I had no idea he was already capable of hanging out like that for so long. I'm so happy with his progress!

Two very important things! The "making it easy" is something I think is still coming into the public consciousness, so that's an especially good tip to highlight!

I agree. The idea that we don't want to wait for the dog to "fail" so that we can correct them for "their mistakes" is definitely a hard concept to grasp in the wake of a lot of popularized TV dog trainers and outdated methods! Helping them be successful and building on success is a much better experience for the learner and the trainer too! Less frustration for all parties is also better for the relationship overall!

Thank you for this lovely reminder that sometimes things can actually go faster when we slow down enough to set up for the good choices. I also really appreciate the reminder to offer rewards for the good behaviour that I take for granted!

Totally! I think some of that comes too the more dogs you work with - you realize, oh this other dog had had a hard time with this, it's in my best interest (and my dog's!) to reward their neutral behavior around this distraction!

Great review of familiar techniques AND you directed me to a great application of “make the right choice easy” that I can’t wait to use! Next training session I’m going to get out the ol’ stapler and work on toy discrimination a LOT more intelligently going forward! Thanks, DoggyU!

Thanks Wendy! Yes, using "lame" options at first definitely helps solidify the concept. Though you'll see on Patreon in a week or two that she DID try to pick up the stapler at one point when we first started training it LOL! Darn operant dogs! Need a heavier stapler ... Happy training!

Another amazing informational video! ❤ Very helpful. Quick question…. Do you. have any advice on resource guarding? I have a boarder collie puppy that’s 9 weeks old and he grows and snaps at hands around his food bowl. Any advice to stop this behavior?
@DoggyU
@DoggyU Жыл бұрын
Hey Zoey, I am not a RG specialist, but significant RG at 9 weeks is something you want to take VERY seriously. I recommend getting a vet behaviorist or someone who specializes in RG on board ASAP. In the meantime, I recommend checking out this book on the subject: amzn.to/3lZonlu Hope that helps!

Do you have any advice for teaching the dog to greet new people in a calm and controlled way
@DoggyU
@DoggyU Жыл бұрын
I only have my dogs greet other people if it's a set-up or the people are on board with training. It's really common for people to behave in ways that reinforce the dog for undesirable behavior. Have you watched my latest video? I talk about management in a household context, but that example also works well out in the world. I would work first on neutrality from your dog, then work on polite greetings. I tend to teach a hand touch for polite greetings and a call-away.
@asecretcourtofcrowsandcloc4084

@@DoggyU that makes sense to teach a call away in touch. I was thinking about doing something similar. I don’t think I saw the management video. I’ll definitely check that out. Thanks for the recommendation.

@@asecretcourtofcrowsandcloc4084 the management steps are the same ones in this video (dog on leash, teaching place etc.). Hoping to do a greeting specific video in the future!
