Hey Sam, this is a little outdated video of mine and there's a lot of missing information still. I encourage you to do more of your own research and experimentation. The concepts are still sound but we must be careful how we apply this. For example we gotta make sure our technique is sound and the one we really want to use when we're doing the really fast practicing. Otherwise the body forces other muscles to help takeover, and force a different kind of technique. But that also works if you're like Chris Turner who doesn't really care about feet technique and just powering through with his hip flexors. To summarize, in my opinion the key is just consistent practice and tweaking with knowledge. Happy new year to you too!

Of course it's okay. You can try doing stuff with your hands but I've found that when I'm trying to go much faster than I can it takes all of my focus to do it. But still go ahead and see if it works for you, as long as it's not some crazy hand independence thing you'll be fine.

@Demonstormlord
@Demonstormlord 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting stuff! Basically, the "piece of cake" sessions are low intensity sessions to improve vo2max, and the "tired as fuck" are HIIT sessions. It is a very sound approach to improving speed from a muscular standpoint. I'll be sure to try it out in the future. :-) One question for you: You are obviously already a very advanced drummer, and therefore, any limitations on your drumming abilities are likely to be purely physical. For someone like me, who is a beginner, coordination and accuracy are also limitations on for example double bass speed. My approach to improve those elements has been playing rudiments on the bass pedals at slower speeds, to try and increase control and coordination. Is this the right approach, or am I doing something wrong? Anyway, thanks for the great content. By the way, what made you switch back to the standard beaters on your Demon drives instead of the quick release ones you had before?
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 5 жыл бұрын
YESSS you nailed it on the sport science terms. Oh I can be very advanced but I still constantly have accuracy and coordination limitations, just on a higher level. Here's the good news. When you are VO2MAX-ing, it's also an opportunity to work on accuracy and coordination, because it's super easy slow. And only in this domain can you devote more of your concentration to the tiny details of every stroke and placement and sound. And when you are in the HIIT domain, more of your concentration is used to focus on not giving up and pushing your body to it's limit. So you don't have to care about accuracy here AND that also has a nice side effect. Building trust in your ability to be accurate. Because you are simply letting it happen without a care about it sounding messy(because it will likely sound messy at an uncomfortably fast speed) And that requires you to see the big picture instead of the tiny details. So it's when you work on the tiny details while doing VO2MAX, and the big picture when doing HIIT, that you create the best balance and workout to develop anything from muscle development to accuracy to memorization to cognitive and motor skills. Damn I love science hahaha. Oh I'm using my switch beaters at my band's studio, therefore using the standard beaters at my own home studio. cheers!
@Demonstormlord
@Demonstormlord 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! It makes sense to add coordination stuff to the vo2max part, and knowing that I don't actually need to be as accurate during HIIT is a relief. I'll add this to my practice routine. Thanks!

Art of Drumming HQ I can't stick to it. The piece of cake session is not a problem, but thing is, I can play at 150 bpm for 5 minutes, but can't even play a proper 155 bpm one second. I don't really have a "tired as fuck" tempo.
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 5 жыл бұрын
It's not about playing anything proper for your TAF sessions. It's about suffering and pushing your muscles way beyond their limit, and you'll pant and tense up and struggle with consistency and accuracy for 20 seconds. I don't care if you fall off the chair doing it, if your feet flam and your left foot slows down and you get an out of phase 16th, that's what this is about. The fact that you can play 150BPM for 5 minutes means you can push at least 170BPM - 180BPM for 20 secs.

@Godkiller08

Good explanation overall. But there is something not quite right : playing double bass works solely on nervous system and not on white fiber (explosive fibers). In fact, you don't produce white fibers by doing a repetitive movement very fast, but by doing one movement very intensively. For that, you need to do a very hard effort, like one squat repetition or a very short and fast sprint. Playing double bass is not intensive for the muscles, but for the nervous system. I would even say it produces more red fibers (endurance fibers), but I don't know that for sure and I won't dig deeper into this argument. I would add that sadly, white fibers are more easily produced before teenage years. After that, it becomes much more easier to produce red fibers than white ones. Very good point on nutrition and resting btw. Proper nutrition and sleeping easily gets 60%-70% of the job done. Don't mind sleeping 9 hours a night, and eat protein and vegetables/fruits for vitamines and fibers.

Firstly, thank you for sharing your views, I'm glad some people don't just take what I say at face value. That's why I urge people to read the articles that I shared in the description, plus do their own research and experiment to find out what actually works best for them. Plus I grossly summarised everything I talked about in this video as I mentioned towards the end of the video. But I'll share a bit more, it is true that you can train white fibers by doing movements very intensively. Either one single movement like a single power lift or heavy bench press. Or a couple of intense and rapid movements like a very short and fast sprint and sprinters generate more force in the same amount of distance covered than marathon runners. That's because force affects the velocity of an object, I'm not going to debate with Sir Isaac Newton his physics laws. Therefore if we play double bass really fast, we have to recruit the explosive fibers to affect the desired change in velocity. Therefore part 1 of my training plan is to practice short and really faster than you can sprint, sprints. I implore anyone to do that and tell me that it wasn't intense. And if double bass works solely on the nervous system, means we can all just practice steady state cardio workouts and see increases in our speed without having to push ourselves. Something that I've been experimenting for a year with little progress. It is true though that double bass is also taxing on the nervous system, all of drumming generally is because we often have to maintain playing for an hour with little breaks in between if we're playing a show. Hence part 2 of my training plan is focused here. I would also add that everyone is born with different ratios of red and white fibers and it is still debated in science how much we can actually modify or grow any new ones. But we can definitely train the existing ones to be more efficient and powerful. And it is possible to convert fibers to fast oxydative glycolytic, which is a type IIa muscle fiber that acts like a hybrid of white and red fibers. Sort of the best of both worlds. I'm going to end this by saying I'm definitely going to be wrong about all of this. Because we're always wrong in the sense that we can always do things better, because it's impossible to understand something completely, because there is no such thing as perfection. And we continuously find out what we believed to be true and real was actually ludicrous nonsense in whatever fields we engage in. But that's how we advance humanity :) So thank you for sharing once again, it's because of your comment that we elaborated more on this topic for the good of this community. I invite anyone to share their own opinions, to break ours down, because then we can all advance drumming together. Cheers Blaast!
@Godkiller08
@Godkiller08 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your response and your view. I don't pretend to know everything aswell and it's true even scientists don't. You're right about the third type of fibers btw, I forgot to question you about it as, correct me if I'm wrong, you didn't talk about it in the video. I would add that I'm not a drummer and my point of view is only based on the sports I practice (running, boxing and a bit of muscular training). The only thing I disagree with is that I think, based on my own experience, that playing drums fast in a short time doesn't affect the muscles the same way powerlifting or very fast sprinting does. What I want to say is that the feeling of exhausting a muscle in a very short time is not the same as burning it, even if you manage to burn the muscle in a short span. Again, I never played drums, but I try to compare playing double pedal as fast punching in boxing for example. It feels to me it exhausts the nervous system much more than the muscle. Actually, having lifted some heavy weights in the past, exhausting the muscle completely in order to summon white fibers feels like... nothing much. Not burning or anything. You just feel a bit tired and you have NO strength anymore until you rest. That's what I'm trying to say, from my experience of course. The feeling is just different, and imo is not recreated by very fast movements. Actually, this kind of exhaustion is only doable in things like powerlifting, and not boxing for example, apart maybe from throwing the hardest punch you can for a few minutes. But again, it impacts more the nervous system from my point of view. Anyway, I don't pretend to know so much too and I happily listen to other point of views. I'm just trying to bring my experience to the overall idea in order to understand and find a way to improve, because it's fascinating and I think it's a very interesting topic. Digging so deep into sport science is what drives me to improve in my own discipline, like yours in drums. I really like the fact that you brought up this topic into drums, and it shows how much hunger for learning you have in order to improve in an art I have never experienced once in my lifetime, but that must be very demanding in physical ability. Thank you for the video and keep it up ;)

I'll try to summarize it, we as drummers can't just play fast, we often times have good endurance too, to play song after song, and concerts. And that is our cardiovascular health that we are targeting in the piece of cake domain. Because if we only do tired as fuck, we can sprint damn fast but we don't have lasting power. Therefore we do both ends of the spectrum. To develop the unique capabilities of both ends. I urge you to read all the articles I referenced. It's impossible for me to explain everything in great detail but you made me realize that I should have explained this part more haha. Hope that helps!
