Really enjoying this series, the more in depth explanations are helpful, especially on what to look for and how to adjust the suspension to correct it, keep up the good work guys.

I had a car for almost a decade before i got a bike but even when i was buying 12 year old bmw’s I thought theres no way the shocks will be ok. Sure enough i took them off and they were toast! So I started to tell people when they talked about buying a new car (new for them still second hand) that they should check their shocks if the car was more than 5 years old. They would say “if they wear out it would be in the service manual”. I’d never get anywhere with them but It’s nice to know I am right and not just “fusy” as some of my friends said. The first bmw i bought i crashed very soon after getting it. I remember feeling like the suspension was just bouncing like it only had springs. When I was repairing it I took the shocks off and they were completely done. I always wondered, had the shocks been good could I have saved it? Theres also a huge thing about stiff suspension on cars when reality is you almost always need it softer. Especially on uk roads. Sorry to rant but I’m hoping someone here will care and dave deserves whatever help i can give him with youtube algorithms

Need all the help I can get so thank you for your comment.Your question is answered that the crash may well have been avoided with correctly set up and serviced suspension. It is just a topic that has no bling to it so it gets ignored or worse. Thank you for sharing!

BMW isn't a brand with products made for lasting - they are made for performance - and very likely BMW puts high effort into smart, computerized probability predictions as well as real world testing to provide the customer with an optimized product - thus meaning, in the end all parts will fail sooner or later the same date, 'nothing left out of this car - maybe consider to pass it on to Ukraine.' ('Ihr Pech, wenn sie in Nordamerika leben und keine Ukraine, Marokko oder Türkei für das Weiterreichen in der Nähe ist' 😉😀)('made to last', obviously)

So, between fork/shock oil services, how many times would the settings be adjusted on the average street bike? 1 per 1000 miles? 500?
@catalystreactionsbw
@catalystreactionsbw 5 жыл бұрын
You would check settings between 700-1000 miles for rebound and for travel/preload.

Great vid Dave. Question. Just went out on my 'go to' road for *cough cough* testing my suspention that im in the middle of fine tuning and noticed when i got back that on BOTH front and rear tyres my trailing tread pattern is higher than the leading tread. What is this ? a rebound issue ? I in the middle of setting up my new suspention and just noticed it, but yet again ive never know what to look for in tyres before watching all your vids over the last few months. Appreciate the help.

Fix that bloody cough :) hahahahaha. Depending where that is the case on he tread, that is rebound to fast so you need to go clockwise/right in .25 increments. Where you are applying control (brakes, throttle) the tread should be even

@@catalystreactionsbw hahaha great thanks Dave. So does mean that the tyres were almost skipping/bouncing when breaking and on the throttle ? Cheers

Is the blue line in 2:13 means that area wore more and the rebound is too quick or not ? Thank you.

Correct. Too quick.

If on the sides the tread is flaring up slightly ?
@catalystreactionsbw
@catalystreactionsbw Жыл бұрын
Then rebound is too fast if the rear edge is taller/flairing up

What would it say about rebound if the edge of the chicken strip on the rear tyre is wavy?
@catalystreactionsbw
@catalystreactionsbw 3 жыл бұрын
Check the leading edge for verification, as the wave can be caused by rebound too fast or slow. If can also be caused by tyre pressure being too low.

@@catalystreactionsbw riding a 2017 Kawasaki Z900. Current tyre pressures are 35 front, 38 rear. The trailing edge of the tread pattern has been a bit more raised, which means the rebound is too fast doesn’t it? The edge of the chicken strip was pretty decent before I slowed down the rebound, so seems slowing it down has caused it, but I only did that in response to the trailing edge being raised, so now not sure what to do. Leave as is to try and combat the trailing edge or speed it up again due to the wavy pattern 🤷🏻‍♂️
@catalystreactionsbw
@catalystreactionsbw 3 жыл бұрын
@@robzz9002 Check where the trailing edge is raised. If it is in the section of tyre where you are driving (flat black), reduce rebound by .25 of a turn. If it is in the shiny area at the edge of the tyre, that is where you are coasting so leave things as is.

so..if my leading edge has more wear,on my back tyre,how do i adjust the rear shock?....i have triumph speed four with new dunlop mk3s...rear shock is stock...in my last tires i had significantly more wear on the leading edge and i would like these dunlops to wear more evenly
@catalystreactionsbw
@catalystreactionsbw Ай бұрын
leading edge has more wear = rebound adjuster right/clockwise in 1/4 turn increments.

@@catalystreactionsbw tnx a lot.. did the adjustment the next day and here we are after about 600km and i can say the tyre is wearing evenly.. so tnx a lot....cheers
