This might be the easiest permanent residency in the EU! At the same time, you can take advantage of the great tax treatment.
We already talked about some good and attractive residencies in the EU: we talked about Malta and Portuguese Golden Visa. This time we are discussing Cyprus.
This program has been updated recently, and this update is making it more attractive than it used to be.
If you want to get Cyprus permanent residency you will need to make an investment. You will be able to buy residential or commercial property, invest in a business or a fund. The investment needs to be 300 000 EUR or greater.
Cyprus is an EU member state, but it's not part of the Schengen zone. Cyprus used to have citizenship by investment program, but they closed it down in November of 2020.
However, today we are discussing their fast track residency program, called Regulation 6.2.
When we say fast track, it means that you can obtain this residency in less than 2 months.
Portuguese Golden Visa takes 6-12 months time, so this is quite faster.
One interesting thing about this program is that you can of course bring your family with you, but you can bring your parents and parents-in-law to Cyprus as well.
If you want to maintain permanent residency you will need to keep this investment permanently. If you sell the property or sell your investment you will no longer qualify. This residency can lead to citizenship but you will need to actually live in Cyprus for 7 years.
However, if you don't want to live there, but still want to keep this permanent residency you will just need to visit Cyprus once every two years.
The tax benefits of this program are amazing. If you're working for a foreign employer you can have your salary exempt from tax. Under the Non-Dom program, your dividends and capital gains will also be exempt from tax. This is probably the easiest place in the EU to get zero tax.
Who are we and what do we do?
We are Offshore Citizen team. We help people become global: get a second passport, set up a second residency, pay less taxes, do banking abroad, etc.
We have lots of interesting articles on different topics, we have relevant information up to date.

Hi Michael - really enjoy the channel. Good work. This year, I've spent time in Madeira (Portugal), Dubai (UAE) and Paphos (Cyprus) to taste the lifestyle and learn about the various residential and tax setups. Spoke to PWC Cyprus last week, when I was quite surprised by what I heard: Most people (including myself until a week ago) believe that in Cyprus you can manage a local company (corporate tax 12.5%) and then pay yourself tax-free dividends as a non-dom. That's not true apparently. PWC told me that the tax authorities will not accept that construct. Instead, they will want you to pay a significant portion in regular salary. Although there was no guiding percentage on what this "significant portion" should be, I was told 50% would have a high change of being accepted. This makes a HUGE difference, as the regular salary will face income tax and social security. What are your thoughts?
@MichaelRosmer
@MichaelRosmer 3 жыл бұрын
A few things to cover here: 1. Dividends in Cyprus are subject to a 2.65% health fee up to a certain maximum level even though they aren't subject to tax 2. Lots of countries won't simply necessarily allow you to take dividends and not salary 3. Any % they tell you is nonsense it doesn't work that way. It depends on the business and your involvement in the business. If for example you were a passive owner you could receive 100% dividends but if you're the only person in the company that's completely different.

Hi Tibor, how interesting! I also spoke to PWC but was told dividends take out is not an issue. Also, it is possible to get 50% off income tax bill as non-dom. I guess it is all subject to individual circumstance. Based on your travels and tax research, what is your opinion on Cyprus? I have not even been there but for my personal tax circumstances it works the best. Is Cyprus similar to Greece? Or is it a different vibe? More regulated than Greece? I would appreciate your views. Thanks.

@@ig8542 Cyprus feels a lot like Croatia I'd say. There are of course similarities to Greece but it's much more entrepreneurial. From a tax standpoint it also depends a lot how much time you spend in Cyprus, in many cases you'd want a non-Cyprus company

@@MichaelRosmer Oh, I wonder why you say that?The hook I was advised is to set up a structure as share premium to pay 2.5% via claiming national interest deduction (80%). To me it sounds the lowest in the EU. In case you mean tax free worlds or Asia I personally don't want to live in Asia. Just came back from there. Human rights and ecological issues are not something I can compromise with.

Hi Michael, How Crypto to Crypto transaction is treated in Cyprus. For example if I exchange my Bitcoin into Ethereum. Is it treated as trading and taxed as business income? Is there a way to save tax if it is taxed? In this entire trade we are not cashing out digital asset in dollar or euro it is just changing the digital form.

Well by default they don't tax securities sales so it's not taxed so it would be the exception. Unfortunately, there aren't clear guidelines on the opposite.

There is a difference between trading and investing. If you're investing then it's clearly not taxable. If you're trading then yes, it can be deemed a profession or business and subject to tax. That being said, there are ways to minimize this with corporate structures. So, if you are definitely trading going that route would be my recommendation.

What about other counties than Cyprus? The question isn’t specifically Cyprus related. Australia is becoming more totalitarian everyday and heaps of people are now thinking about getting out or at least having other options, it’s a tax slavery nightmare, people pay 60%+ on average ask any accountant. In the past people fled oppressive regimes to the West, now it seems to be beginning to happen in reverse. The hard part is most people have family in their slave based legacy brand western countries, and at least want to visit sometimes, and would never want to leave entirely. It’s simply a matter of fleeing oppression.
