When a new wood splitter rolls along into the wood yard, I can't help but feel like things are about to change. Whether the change is for the better or not will be seen today as I give you a run-down on this brand new Eastonmade Ultra wood splitter. This wood splitter is the fastest hydraulic wood splitter on the market today and rivals the cycle time of previously untouched kinetic wood splitters. Best thing about it is it's hydraulic so way less moving parts. Now before I get ahead of myself, lets see whether the hype surrounding this wood splitter is actually true. A proper shake down is in order and that's just what we'll do. Glad you're all here for the first look and splitting of this wood splitter. Should be a good one!

Another great real world test, thanks Sandy. I have always been skeptical of the 4 way wedge, and you proved me right. It is really only good in a picture perfect world. I feel like it gave inconsistent splits in size etc. That being said I am on the Easton made wood splitter website, very impressed with the product, just as a personal preference i would stick to a single wedge. I look forward to future videos where you perfect your technique. Change my mind on the four way.

I've only ever done this twice on my friends small holding in South Wales, UK, loved being outside helping a friend. We've both taught manual handling in past lives and were initially throwing the split wood in the same way you did. Wish I'd known about the tool used to pick up the logs. Having stopped for a piece of cake and a cup of tea, why wouldn't we, we're Brits, we decided to move the splitter next to the cage rather than in line with the rear of it. The throwing is in a straight motion rather than twisting our backs whilst throwing. Where are we going to get our 'Sawing with Sandy' hit if you get hurt. Gotta love the outdoors, keep it going Sandy, always look forward to the next episode!!

I have been watching "In The Woodyard" and I think he had his for 3 years. Your gonna love it. Someone said remove the hitch. You will learn to keep it on or remove, but putting on engine side for in your property so it does not get hit by your wood after being split. Adjusting the wedge, have a jack so you can raise it with little effort on your back.

Sandy, the bottom twin "beams" you showed that you can see all the way to the other side...I understand all about the possible moisture issue that can arise, but I would add some type of screening to each side to prevent wasps from building nests in there as it is a perfect place for them to do so.

One slight drawback is no log lift but a round too heavy to lift can be halved or quartered with a saw. No hydraulic wedge either. Maybe they could be an addon option for the Ultra. One needs a model up for those. Otherwise, real nice splitter and real nice tour of it. World class stuff.
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy Жыл бұрын
All good points Neil. I think to likely keep the price point where it is some of those features maybe had to go to higher models. Not too sure though. I figure I'll load my tractor bucket with the heavy rounds to lift it up if needed.

Definitely a good addition to the wood processing I don't think you are going to miss the old one you do have some experience to aquire like any other new piece of equipment only one bad thing about this new equipment that will give you a problem when you show the center beam being hollow I did notice what a nice place for bees to make a nest two nice long hollow tube if you want to keep the air to circulate at least put something like screen caps or make sure you got a cane of bees spray with your machine if I was you I would mention it to the company to see what solution they would have don't want to tell you what to do but I believe it's something to be look at have a great day

You'll quickly figure out that the single wedge does a much better/easier job on those gnarly crotch pieces of firewood. The Eastonmade ultra is a great splitter. Just like the your FX85 skidding winch you'll quickly wonder why did I wait so long to get this. Chris at In The Woodyard youtube channel has been running the ultra for quite a while. Hi Sandy like your videos I am in Aberdeen Scotland and run my house completely on wood . You are having to handle your wood more than necessary with your splitter gwhere with a Farmi 36 you put the log on the processor cut it split it and conveyor it to your trailer or wherever. Now it is fast. Having been since 2006 I notice North Americans seem to favour splitters as to wood processors big mistake in my opinion processors save time for you to sawmill. Just bought a Norwood MN 27 something new for me mostly larch. Have fun.
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy Жыл бұрын
Great to have ya on the channel. That processor sounds like a great tool for ya. One thing that likely holds back many from the processor purchase here is the cost compared with that of the splitter which is often considerably less. Sounds like a great sawmill ya got! Keep me updated how it goes when you get down to sawing. Thanks for watching

I like the vertical splitters so I don't have to lift the logs onto it, I can roll and tip them on the foot saving my back! With the horizontal, splitting larger logs would be harder and if you need to split it more than once you have to lift it again and from both sides.

These are a very nice entry level commercial splitter. There are a few changes I would like to see… 1) catch table edged. I recommended to Andrew that they brake these to 45* instead of 90*. Chris from the woodyard can attest to my suggestion 2). Pinning single wedge. I also recommended put the “weld stops” on the single wedge at the highest position. I see no advantage to having multiple setting for a single wedge. Only needs one hole at highest setting and it will stay put during transporting.

Even tho a cylinder face is machined the piston/seal is able to move up and down especially under a load. I’m not sure if this actually helps or not on the ultra but it is an excellent design either way. The old pin in clevis style works but it allows lots of movement

Hey Sandy, you better watch out for a wasp nest building in that beam. It's a perfect spot for them. Other than that I think you have a great log splitter. That thing is built like a tank. Nice!

Very nice splitter and now that I want one really bad I'm afraid to look it up because of sticker shock! 🤣 I'd rather get sticker shock before I want something rather than after, it's less depressing that way. 😉

You need to put the squarest end at the push plate. This will help keep the wood from jumping up & off the splitter.

Nice video. That looks like like nasty wood to split. Can you explain why they angle the horizontal wedges up at the ends on the 4 way splitter?
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy Жыл бұрын
Hey Terry! Was done knotty stuff. I think the angle prevents the wood from being jammed down against the bottom of the splitter getting stuck

Take your hitch off. Set it up so the wood goes directly into your bin. The wood will keep pushing itself forward, no need to toss every split log. Just a suggestion

I think having the engine up high is hard on the ears. maybe a plywood cover and sides to protect it from the weather and reduce the noise. Some times I hold a large chunk of split wood that needs split in half up so the main blade will split it in half you can let go as soon as the pusher holds it to the blade.

Hey Todd! Sure is a great machine so far. I haven't found anything that stops it. I can't quite remember the exact time but it was a decent wait. I actually picked the wood splitter up though. I've got a video in this playlist showing a tour of the Eastonmade factory if you're interested. Thanks again for watching
@timbrown8938

@@sawingwithsandy Sandy, no recent Eastonmade owner will give an actual wait time for their splitter. I have a 12-22 ordered and was told the canned "12-13 months". Did Andrew tell you guys to keep the delivery time a secret or what? Things were supposed to get quicker with the move to the new shop. I'm climbing the walls waiting to get the call. Thanks!
