I’ve been on a 21 hour fast with a 3 hour eating window for a week now and lost 8 pounds. I try to eat at least 1,500 calories during the window. I eat a large mixed green salad with olives, avocado, and raw nuts. A steak, or salmon, or chicken, pork loin, mainly quality protein. Stir fry veggies or fruit smoothie with apples, berries, and coconut water. Not worried about carbs, just concentrating on wholesome food and nothing processed.

Dr. Fung changed my life. After I read the obesity code, I cut sugar and tried OMAD for 60 days. I dropped 5% body fat (34-29). I am no longer skinny fat! I have continued fasting, typically 16:8. Learning how to push through hunger was a wild ride, not pleasant at first but so worth it.

He changed my life too by changing my entire strategy. I no longer focus on calories. Instead I focus on hormones and it’s entirely changed my life. After decades of trying, I have the greatest body composition I’ve had in my entire life from following Dr. Fung’s advice. I tried the conventional wisdom of “eat less and move more” and hit a predictable wall every time. Since I’ve applied Dr. Fung’s advice I’ve absolutely blown through those walls.

This must be the single most important video you can watch with regards to dieting and health. Gives a lot of detail but explained in a simple manner. After I have tried it all I recommend to - For loseing weight intermitted fasting or keto. I prefer fasting as then when I do eat I can have carbs. - For building muscle eat protein and some carbs every 4 hours. I prefer to interchange between periods of losing weight and gaining muscle rather than do both at the same time. Altough I do try when building muscle not to gain fat.

I did fasting for two/three days a week (from Sunday evening to Tuesday evening/Wednesday evening) for couple of months. It wasn't easy, but....there is no easy way. Glad I did fast, because I have no loose skin. If you want to lose weight, listen to this guy. Of course you're gonna change your mindset on eating. Question- Dr. Fung - thank you for your work. I have a question. I have done three day fasts for the purpose of prayer many years ago. I had no need for losing weight at the time, but no one believed me that I had more energy and needed less sleep when fasting. Now I understand why. Before and after menopause, I gained a lot of weight. Due to a cancer scare, I did Gerson therapy fir a few months. Without realizing it, over 7 months I lost 60 lbs. i discovered why my clothes didn’t fit when at the beginning I had a bad cough and went to the clinic and was weighed, then returned a few months later due to a fracture. For the context of my question - I had a diagnosis of pre-diabetic with high cholesterol. My pre menopause normal weight was 110, and my first clinic visit I was 187 before losing 60 lbs.. My question: The Gerson therapy requires 8 oz of fresh juice every hour -apple carrot, carrot, and apple and greens and allows these carbs - potatoes, oats, rye (as 2 slices of bread a day). There is also Hippocrates soup daily, and a large green salad. Only walks are allowed for exercise, and rest and sleep are integral. At my wellness check at the end of the year, my labs were all normal. My question - I’m assuming that the therapy may have healed me of insulin resistance. Would this explain the weight loss I experienced despite the constant inflow of fresh juice? I want to understand as I learned about your work after this experience. Thank you.

@@thetree7694 I think that the fasting Dr. Fung recommends may help. In my case, I was doing Gerson therapy. Fasting is definitely less work, but if you’re interested to lesrn more about Gerson, check them out at Gerson.org. There is also a facebook support group. If you decide to do fasting, combine it with exercising when in a fasted state, and do high intensity interval training. I just put music on and dance with weights. It takes less time than a typical workout. It isn’t particular moves, but the timing that matters and also that your whole body is involved.

I water fasted for 2 weeks. I was cold, hungry and I slept way more than normal and I couldn't think clearly. I felt like I was dieing. At the time I was 75 pounds over weight so I know I had plenty of fat to burn. After researching the only thing I can figure is my problem is Leptin. Is there a different way to fast for Leptin issues?

Does ginger root tea break fasting? or in general Tea ? ( of course without honey or sugar)

I do IF, the 16:8 method. I take green tea, black coffee and water. What I know is that anything below 50 calories does not break the fast. There are some videos on this subject of IF which talks about what can be consumed during the fasting period.

If you’re running 10 KMS a day does this conversation change? You’d have a massive caloric deficit whilst perhaps eating more ( even more carbs which means more insulin )

Fasting can reduce calories without restricting food groups👍 Regardless of the style of fasting, this most recent study suggests that fasting works to facilitate weight loss simply by reducing calorie intake.

This is what I seem to be realizing. Lower insuline is great for fat burning and as long as u eat in a deficit. U losing weight. Takes time tho.

Keto helps by keeping insulin down. Otherwise you can get in a strange cycle of gaining weight in the day to then lose it during overnight fasting. Also keto makes fasting easier because you don't get the hunger pangs when the carbs stop coming.

It’s not the calories. That works in the short term but not in the long term. Counting calories and eating frequently has a 95-99% failure rate over time. Don’t focus on the number of calories. Focus on what you eat and its effects on your hormones, and how frequently you eat and the hormonal response to that.

@@boondoggle4820 but if you want to eat some of that good good sometimes then you gotta count. I always eat protein with my meals so it helps to keep me satiated.

@@MichaelBroer That’s true, really. I only “count calories” when I eat processed foods to limit the amount, which I still eat from time to time because it’s delicious, but I know that the real issue is that it’s a processed food.

When does your body tell you that it would be a good idea to fast? And also, for how long? I tried a three day fast not too long ago, was one interesting experience, particularly mentally.

It takes about 3 days before hunger stops like turning off a switch assuming there is enough body fat available to burn.

Personally I think 3 days is not long enough. I mean, it's good, but the real benefits are between 3-5 days for me. That's when I feel my body becoming well. First 3 days is the challenging period of transition, 3-5 days is feeling the rewards of the transition you made.

@The Guy With Unpopular Opinion Lol, I know it seems that way! But as you get better at it, you start to really crave the feeling you get when you're deep in a prolonged fast. All inflammation gone. Feel light, consistently energetic, your body gets into a harmonic state that I've never experienced when eating. I can literally feel the healing taking place.
