It's time to convert my lower radiator hose to AN Style, as well as my Heater hose input into my timing cover, hopefully without welding, by utilizing AutoPlumb fittings. We shall see.. We're on the tail end of my engine rebuild, if you missed it, check out the engine tear down episode... the bearings were toast! In this episode, "Installing a lower AN Radiator hose and heater hose conversion, without welding? Pontiac Re-build part 14", is the final step before firing this new rebuild for the first time. Sorry, I love AN Fittings, and AN hoses, because they look awesome, and don't leak! Follow along with the Pontiac 400 (Now a 470) engine installation, by subscribing below;

i know this video is 2 years old but when inserting a hose into an AN nut, rotate counterclockwise and it will walk itself into the nut. just forcing it in like that works but the nut is designed to have the hose "threaded" in. thats what those grooves on the inside of the nut are for. great video btw
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 4 ай бұрын
Well... not exactly. While twisting AND pushing does help, those internal grooves are not threads, they're retaining grooves that hold the hose in. In my second version of this video, I added another step and that's to heat up the nut with a heat gun, while pushing/twisting the hose in. Thanks for the comment!

Just a tip in the event you experience overheating under aggressive driving. Many older cars had springs inside that hose to prevent the hose from collapse when pulling really hard at high RPM. I had this exact problem on my 72 cuda. Nice work on the video man! Sweet goat too!

Thanks for pointing out Autoplumb. I have a weird motor swap and was looking to upgrade to AN lines because they look a lot better than my home-made set up that is difficult to get to seal perfectly all the time. This is a much better way to do it.

Do you have to worry about the hose collapsing in on the lower radiator hose? My lower hose has a spring in it.
@FastMonty

Nope, it's much more sturdy than a standard hose.
@rosewd2

Are you using urethane engine mounts or a torque strap? I would think when the engine moves/flexes that lower hose is going to break?
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 11 ай бұрын
It's flexible. I think Autoplumb mentions you need a minimum of 6" of hose. I'd double check with them, if you're going to do this mod. Thanks.

I was wondering how you planned on sealing the orb fitting for the heater hose neck on the timing cover, the oring needs a tapered seat to seal?
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks John, that's a fantastic question. If I'm not mistaken, the ORB O-Ring just needs a flat surface. BUT, I could be wrong... Luckily, I didn't go down that path to find out. ha, ha... Next time I take apart one of my other O-Ring fittings, I'll have to pay attention to that mating surface. Thanks for pointing that out!

i hope you have solid motor mounts, if not wont the rocking of the motor rip that apart over time?

Good question.. I do have "stiff" mounts, but there is some compliance with the hose, and joint. No worries for me. Great point.

without welding while you weld both water pump fittings. The water pump end is my concern, I watched the top hose video and got hooked on the lower Idea. I have a custom polished aluminum tube for top. Will be on SBC mechanical aluminum pump. Did you go back and heat the top fittings to see if they compressed more?
@FastMonty
@FastMonty Жыл бұрын
Great question... No, I did not go back and re-do the top hose. But, my next video I'm changing the radiator hose, so yes, I'll be doing it correctly. Lol. Thanks for the awesome comment!

@FastMonty

Thanks Paul... you might have missed it, I just used a Hose Barb to - 10 AN fitting, to attach to the remaining hose. (My hose goes under the fender to the firewall, so, really tough to get at it) Thanks again!

This is probably a dumb question, but I’m planning on buying these AN adapters for my coolant system and I’ve run into a dilemma. The bottom pipe on my radiator measures 40 MM, or 1.575 Inches. Autoplumb’s nearest adapter says it will fit 1.525”-1.550”. Do you think I can purchase that nearest size adapter and modify it to make it fit? For some reason the next size up is 1.750”-1.774”, which seems way too large. Could I modify this one to make it fit? Thanks in advance!
@FastMonty
@FastMonty 2 жыл бұрын
No such thing as dumb questions here... ummm, well, maybe there are. But, yours is not. Ha, ha... In my opinion, NO, you can not modify the next closest adapter. It's a very well toleranced machined piece, and I wouldn't modify it. That said, have you asked Autoplumb directly to see if they're going to release any new sizes? Keep us posted!
