FAT: A Documentary 2 is the sequel to the international sensation that delves deeper into the lies and myths surrounding the age-old question: "What should I be eating?" "Common knowledge" regarding healthy eating has grown more and more confusing seemingly by the day. Vinnie Tortorich and a host of health experts talk about the conflicts between plant eaters and meat eaters and how hidden machinations in the food industry are the reasons why we believe what we do about food and optimal health.

I have been studying this for 20 years, since I first studied evolutionary biology and realised our dietary advice doesn't make any sense whatsoever. And I came to the conclusion that the problem is the fact that our "heath" authorities are now far more concerned with political and economic agendas, than they are with actual health.

@@ascendtoaesthetics Humans are omnivores, but throughout ancient history, before we became agriculturalists 20,000 years ago, we were mostly carnivorous. We have archeological digs that support this, although there seems to be a lot of effort to dispute this recently (i.e vegan propaganda), which appears to be politically/economically motivated. Imagine being a hunter-gatherer 20,000 years ago - I don't think you will be able survive on plant-based food if you are foraging in the wild, and certainly in the winter the only available food source will be animals. And no, I don't follow a strict diet, but I try to avoid any type of food that didn't exist 100 years ago.

@@samanthaporter6662 this is not entirely true. I have been keto and carnivore dieter, the carbs is not really the issue they way you think it is. Natural carbs are abundant in nature, especially in a fast absorbing way. It's the "modern" carbs that raises your insulin very fast (glycemic index). Some people are still in ketosis eating carbs. Some genetics are even more carb adapted, yamnaya people drank milk (carb source). The optimal diet is carnivore + very high fiber foods. It's typically traditional foods. Over time your physiology will become more metabolically adapted. Look for your ancestry what they are, try to replicate and see the result. Italians are very skinny eating loads of carbs. @@samanthaporter6662 that unfortunately isn’t true. Ancestors mostly did eat seasonal fruits and veg as found in many excavations of preserved human stomachs. Meat was few and far between and would likely be in abundance for a few days while it was fresh. Everyone is trying to say one food is better than another but it’s not that simple. The body’s digestive tract is designed to get the best out of plants. It’s long to maximise nutrient absorption. If you cut out the highly processed crap you should be fine to eat whatever. It’s all about calories in and out and balance. This proposed living off pure meat is insane and will end up killing people with the organs having to process all the toxic build up of keytones

@@pubwvj sure! If she thinks she has PCOS i HIGHLY recommend she sees a Fertility Specialist. It may be expensive and she'll to get A LOT of tests and bloodwork but its worth it. For years I saw OBGYNs and no one ever even mentioned to test me for PCOS and I suffered most of my life bc of that. So, find a well-rated Fertility Specialist in your area that accepts her insurance and start there. From what I understand about PCOS is that because of the hormonal imbalance, this could cause issues with insulin that could lead to diabetes if not managed. So thats why eating low carb is recommended bc it causes fewer insulin spikes. Plus, hormones benefit from dietary fat and can be negatively impacted by carbohydrates. So, if she goes low carb, its a good idea for her to increase her dietary fat, protein, and fiber from non-starchy veggies so she feels full/satisfied and it won't turn into a crash diet. She can Google "low carb recipes", find ones she likes, and get started. Hope this helps!

also following the 80/10/10 model - 80% carbs in the form of fresh fruits & vegs; no more than 10% protein; no more than 10% fat. Consuming animal proteins is really just reprocessing the plants the animals got their amino acids from. Plants have more than sufficient amino acids, the building blocks of protein. To much protein causes the body to keep building even tho it doesn't need to, which results in overgrowth or deformation of existing cells, commonly called cancer. Too much fat means your body can't process out toxins therefore creates fat pockets to store toxins away from the organs, more commonly known as obesity.

The deception of the American food industry is just mind boggling. This documentary even states the problem...we're told to eat this, don't eat that, this is healthy, this is not healthy. No WONDER people are confused. I am blessed to not live in the US (no offence) and live in a Western country that, whilst we have high levels of obesity and junk food, we have moderate level of advertising of these foods. We have a real CHOICE in my country to eat healthy if we want to, even for people on lower incomes as healthy food has always been readily available and cheap in most parts of my country. The food deserts in America and overadvertising of junk food, not to mention the oversupply of junk and sugary foods in most American supermarkets is just disgusting. It is almost criminal. And how does the American health care system HELP people who end up getting diseases as a result of eating this high-fat, high sugar American diet? They ask you to pull out your wallet. They won't treat you for operations or surgeries or any treatments unless you have MONEY. So you're paying industries to get sick by eating fast food, then you're paying AGAIN to get treatment for diseases that are caused by this profit- driven and greedy food industry. I really feel sorry for most people living in America. Manufacturing food for the American public should NEVER be only about profit. We live in a 'free market' where there is diversity of products, but people really have no real choice over what they eat as nearly everything in America is just another version of sugar or fat. You can't even trust breakfast cereals over there, they're loaded with as much sugar as chocolate. The only solution is to just be honest with the people about what's in the products. And what effect that has on their bodies. Really educate Americans as to what's causes weight gain, obesity and other health issues. Of course, there's no money in it for the American food industry, nutrition industry, health care industry. So of course why would they do that? SMH...the greed. The greed.

I do believe your progress, but not the reason. I'm glad it worked for you but the only thing that works is looking at energy in vs energy out. Since you started keto, you probably consume less calories in combination with more protein and can sustain more muscle, which have a high energy requirement. It's not because you excluded a food group, it's because you balanced your intake.

@@daniels-mo9ol I do agree that there might have been a calorie reduction but the only reason why I was able to get on that calorie reduction was because I got off the insulin train. Before going keto, I would get ravenous when I was hungry which felt like all the time which indicated insulin resistance. Now I'm not 100% sold on the calorie in/out because I still eat a ton and most of it is high fat high protein diet which we all know fat has 9 cal/g vs the 4 of protein/carbs. Saying calories in/out assumes that our bodies are machines without built in adaptations. Cal in/out also assumes our bodies are 100% efficient in processing the intake of calories especially since each calorie type affects your body differently when intaked.

@@cincin4515 yes and no. We have an issue here in the states where the government supports monocrops. Most farmers grow either corn/soy or beets/soy. (soy add nitrogen to the soil preventing crop rotation) Most food we eat here is from other countries (there are small exceptions like lettuce, avocadoes or oranges and even then those are supplemented with produce from other countries) Food processing consumes a great deal of what we grow (outside of exports). While it is true that buying local is better, that isn't always an option, even with things like co-ops and farmers markets. Those subsidies are a incentive to keep those farmers from growing varied crops that can be sold within the states.

It literally goes straight through you and in return, you barely get nutrients. You have to be reliant on supplements to get in your vitamins and nutrients. We are omnivores. We are made to eat all the food groups. Sugar being on the lower end. Like in the video, long term vegans have switched up their diet because it caught up to them. There is studies out there that shows vegans brains shrinking due to the lack of B12. Plants do not have everything you need. I cut out red meat most of my life and everyday, I would crave meat. Not like a sugar craving, but more of a need rather than a want. I went keto and my health changed. My blood work is amazing. I’m gaining muscle while losing fat. I’m the same weight as I was but with less fat. Every time I see a vegan, they’re either skinny, or fat. No muscle. Now I will say there is vegan bodybuilders, but they complain of having a lack of energy constantly. So they supplement it with crack loads of caffeine and supplements. It’s not sustainable. From the amount of food, to how our food is being processed and what hormones are being added. I'm a fitness athlete and I've noticed when I cut protein shakes out of my diet I became more ripped and I think its because a lot of supplements have maltodextrin as an artificial sweetener. And maltodextrin has a GI higher then regular table sugar. That means it spikes your blood sugar more then regular added sugar. Always look at the ingredients list when buying a product. They do not legally have to disclose how many grams of maltodextrin is in a serving, so most of the time it will say 0 added sugars or some low amount when in reality their is (im assuming) a boat load. But who knows ? they don't have to tell us. The FDA needs to fix this. EDIT: And yes I'm consuming the same amount of calories despite the protein powder being removed from my diet. I count every last calorie that enters my mouth hole very accurately. I typically eat 2600-3200 depending on physical activity done that day.

While many people have successfully followed this diet, there are some issues and considerations to be aware of: This is a diet not a life style. Guaranteed to cause issues in the long run and shortens life expectancy. Training or not. It is a fact, not myth! Nutrient deficiencies: Following a ketogenic diet restricts several food groups, including fruits, whole grains, and legumes, which are important sources of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Without careful planning and monitoring, there is a risk of deficiencies in essential nutrients such as vitamin C, folate, and potassium. Keto flu: When transitioning to a ketogenic diet, some people experience symptoms known as the "keto flu." These can include fatigue, headache, irritability, dizziness, and nausea. These symptoms are usually temporary and can be minimized by staying properly hydrated and ensuring adequate electrolyte intake. Digestive issues: A sudden increase in fat consumption can lead to digestive issues such as constipation, diarrhea, and bloating. It is important to maintain a balanced intake of fiber and hydrate well to support healthy digestion. Risk of nutritional imbalances: The high-fat nature of the ketogenic diet can lead to imbalances in certain fats, specifically an excessive intake of saturated fats. It is important to prioritize healthy fats from sources like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil while moderating the intake of saturated fats from animal products. Sustainability and social challenges: The strict nature of the ketogenic diet can make it difficult to sustain in the long term. It requires careful meal planning and can be challenging to follow in social situations, making it less practical for some individuals.

In scientific debates there are often separate mathematical questions about how the data ought to be fairly analyzed. Some methods for doing this analysis can look good at first glance but they're seriously flawed and can lead to false conclusions. It's the same with philosophy of science. Some methods of argumentation in science can look good at first glance, but can be be seriously flawed. I didn't study mumbo jumbo in school, so I have to admit ignorance about that.

All I can say is: following a low fat diet and vegetarian diet ruined my life. I was born premature, into a home where my mother was mentally volatile, suffered from anxiety and depression my whole life. Anorexia and bulemia nervosa from the age of 14, which turned into IBS and chronic fatigue syndrome at 34. I was skeptical about the Atkins diet because everyone said that fat was poison, so I avoided the stuff like it was the plague. Sadly it took a health catastrophe and being severely let down by the medical establishment that I finally took a good hard look at the food industry as a whole and realised I'd been royally screwed over. Gave keto a go and haven't looked back. It hasn't cured my cfs, but no more depression, no extreme hunger, no more joint pain, no more menstrual cramps, no mood swings. I have never felt so at peace in my entire life.

The only I pulled myself down to 79Kgs was by going KETO. Lost that difference in about 5 months. That's the only time I did Keto and it was so beneficial for that short time. What they have in common is avoiding all processed, chemically laden foods and high amounts of sugars and eating freshly sourced foods. This doesn't need to be a keto vs. vegan argument. Why not eat a balanced diet including appropriate amounts of all healthy foods sources? This battle of diets just promotes division.

Totally. Being in a chronic state of ketosis is absurd, but not quite as problematic as being in a chronic hyperinsulinemic state. Folks in Blue Zone, Inuit, Maasai, Hadza, and other more ancestrally appropriate societies have one thing in common: dipping in and out of a mild ketosis. Nothing at clinical, cancer therapeutic levels, but far from constantly elevated glucose. Since eating more animal foods (protein/fat) and limiting other more processed or plant foods, I’ve found myself in this transitory, mildly ketogenic state.

That is because fat is a proper human diet... the body has mechanisms to tell you when to stop, through hormones in the gut, leptin for the brain, and stretch receptors in the stomach. It's a negative feedback mechanism. Carbohydrates, however, deliver only positive feedback... they want you to eat more of them, and that is a survival hack in our DNA to fatten up for the winter, when animals will be hard to find. This worked well 250,000 years ago, when we did not know how to farm, preserve and store plants. Now, look at us in 2022...

I’ll politely disagree regarding one ‘food’ item. There are many absurd examples of things you wouldn’t want to use in moderation - hard drugs, poisons, spoiled milk, putrified meat, etc. Seemingly as absurd would be the inclusion of rotten plants. Yet, that’s essentially what seed oils are. Far removed from their natural state, they require a process of refining (yes, just like crude oil), bleaching (because the gray color of the product resulting from the refining process is repulsive), and deodorizing (because the end product is already so oxidized and rancid it’s inedible and full of oxidants). There is no amount of moderation that should allow for the rational inclusion of these industrial oils.

The butter had 1 ingredient and the olive spread had about 10 ingredients (some nasty or dubious at best) and not even that much olive oil in it. The scariest thing is the butter had a 0.5 health star and the olive margarine spread had a 3 health star rating. The total corruption and total misunderstanding of our foods and food industries was so striking to me at that moment.

Here's something for my exercise-avoidant friends. Being obese makes exercising WAY worse. I have a lot of personal experience with this. When I went on keto and lost a good amount of weight, I gained a greater capacity to exercise. Namely, aerobic exercise. In school I was never able to complete a 1-mile run without having to walk. After losing weight with keto, without starving myself, in conjunction with time-restricted eating, I found that jogging was far easier and even kind of fun. I followed with my doctor and my cholesterol improved (it was never high, but my HDL was low), my GERD resolved (especially with time-restricted eating), I drastically improved my blood pressure, and I had my doctor's blessing despite not being a keto-positive doctor. The medical advice was simply "You've lost weight and improved all your biomarkers and blood pressure. Keep doing what you're doing because it's clearly working"

Yes, it has benefits, but as long as someone is consuming minimal carbs (even as low as zero, there are NOT any essential carbs to consume for health/life) and keeping Randle cycle activation low (meaning inflammation, insulin resistance, etc are also low), people will be healthier. edit - to come out of keto without consuming carbs, increase protein and decrease fat

I tried being vegetarian or even vegan multiple times in my 20s and 30s but gave up. I decided to follow what my body craved, what felt good, not just what I thought I should want. I'm now in middle age and my doctors say I'm as healthy as someone on their 20s when they do my labs. BMI of 20. Sleep well and feel great. What I eat? I'm allergic to eggs, beans, and dairy, but other than that I eat whatever I want, just usually in small quantities. Bacon or sausage is something I eat almost every day. I don't eat breakfast though, more brunch and then dinner, doing intermittent fasting. I tried keto for a few months and felt great, ended my joint pain. Unfortunately I couldn't afford to lose any weight, so had to stop it, because I lost about 15 pounds and looked gaunt. Sugar really is addictive. It's been hard bringing back the carbs without continually doing more and more and more. That's a battle I'll commit to fighting though, because I know now that I feel best with little carbs (not none) and lots of fat while going at least 16 hours each day without eating anything. I'm continually trying to have just enough carbs to keep my weight up without intensifying to the point I get worsening joint pain and other problems from sugar.
