Piers Morgan Uncensored is joined by chef Tom Kerridge after his 12-stone weightloss to discuss his journey and the issues surrounding obesity. They debate whether 'fat shaming' is an effective method of getting people motivated to lose weight, with Piers revealing he ended up shedding the pounds after a TV critic wouldn't stop commenting on his pshysique.
He describes how he was targeted in newspaper columns by Ally Ross but that it motivated him to lose his weight. Tom responds by suggesting that everyone is different and requires different needs and might not have the money to buy healthier food or go to the gym.

I'm a clinician and I don't agree with fat shaming. But being nice is the key. It works for most of my patients. But I also had a patient with a few diseases, I told her whether she was thinking about healthy living lifestyle e.g. exercising, eating healthier food, in a way where she doesn't get annoyed. She said I'm sick and tired of doctors telling me that I have to lose weight, I'm happy with my size!!! These people don't understand that we are not trying to give them body dysmorphia, we are here to educate our patients. We can only do so much i guess. It is the social media that is trying to normalise it because rich people are running it. It isn't normal,it is also destroying the NHS!

I’ve been anorexic for decades and whenever my weight gets very low, doctors have no problem telling me how it is! If I told them to get lost, I’m happy with my weight, I’d be involuntarily admitted into hospital quicker than you can say skinny shaming.

@@ClezVideos honestly, it is all about health, skinny or overweight, it doesn't matter, that is why there is an ideal body weight for all heights, to estimate the healthier weight. I think we care a lot about everyone and we as clinicians need to be maybe more relaxed about the problem because sometimes when we speak to them they show that they don't simply care .. there are a lot of psychological issues as well, but they don't want to sometimes resolve those or ask for help. We just want the best for them..♡♡♡

Tom's so right! I was obese for a long time but being bullied and fat-shamed didn't make me want to lose weight... it made me want to die. For a person to decide to lose weight, something needs to click inside them. Piers seems to think that fat-shaming will trigger the click in anyone who's overweight, he's wrong. Hopefully he drops that belief.

The way that I see it is that losing weight permanently or the incentive to just start I feel ought to come from a place of genuinely wanting to get it done for the reasons that mean the most to you, not anyone else. Fat shaming only made me want to end my life. My mum wouldn’t even let me call her mum in public because she was so ashamed of my weight. She starved me for the first 17 years of my life so I wouldn’t get fat like the rest of her family. I became obsessed with food. I started stealing and hiding food and eating it under my bed covers when I was about 14. I developed this horrible relationship with food and my eating became so disordered. I’d be thinking about my next meal while eating my current meal. My mental health got so bad that I ended up in the psych ward. Then the meds they put me on made me so fat that I got diabetes. I ended up getting a gastric sleeve and I’ve lost 32kg (70lb, 5.4 stone) my relationship with food is a little better, but still disordered. I don’t talk to my mum anymore because she made me so unwell. All my friends are so supportive and loving and that’s what I needed…not fat shaming from someone who was meant to love me.

I was fat shamed as a child as well and I wasn't even that big (I was around 120-130 lbs at 13 years old at the height of 5'2" or 5'3") and I became anorexic after. However, I do not think that the fat shaming alone triggered the eating disorder, I think other factors were involved (huge move from one state to another, previous childhood abuse), so I cannot say that this applies to everyone. I am a firm believer of fat shaming, as this shame keeps me in decent shape as an adult now and stops me from eating large amounts of food or junk food. Restriction sucks but it works as long as you're not anorexic and as long as you incorporate healthy foods. I hate restriction as I have a huge appetite for my size (I am 120 lbs at 5'6" and I can easily eat the same portions that my 240 lb father eats). But I'd rather restrict than be fat.

@John Smith You saying that you have an eating disorder and anxiety, and that you have those things because you have a weak mind, has me feeling very conflicted right now! My initial reaction was to say that those struggles don't mean you're weak and that I hope you're able to get any help you may need when you need it because thinking that you can just think your way out of mental health issues is usually not healthy...but then I thought that maybe you telling yourself you're weak isn't so bad because that's you telling yourself that you're strong and you're not letting your struggles make you fall apart and lose sight of the strength you know you have, which *is* healthy...so I guess I just hope you're healthy and being kind to yourself and I hope you know when and where to go for any help you need, and in the meantime I hope you keep on remembering how strong you are...? I feel like that's good to say no matter the scenario, so I'm going to go with that 😂 Hope you're happy and doing okay, fellow human! ✌️🖤

The weight on the scales is unimportant but fat around the waist is linked to many illnesses (in men too but they are unlikely to have large boobs). In addition, fat around the organs (one can be slim with fat around organs too) causes a lot of health problems. Also see young Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe when Norma Jean etc. Although big boobs may make one look larger especially if one wears a baggy top, wearing tailored clothes, cinching the waist and wearing slim fitted pants/skirts etc isn't too tricky... if one is seld-conscious wear a minimiser bra. Point is the diseases caused by being too fat eg diabetes, heart disease etc are not caused by big boobs (in women - not sure about Man boobs) but by fat around the stomach and other organs. I’m obese, everyone in my family is obese and I’m sure it’s partly hereditary. For me the other parts are due to health problems, medications I have to take and also bad habits with food. The body positivity movement in the USA is toxic. I’m for being accepting of who you are in the moment because you can’t fix the weight over night. Obesity can be hereditary, access to poor food, mental and physical trauma. There’s so many things. I’m for encouraging people to be healthy and loose weight but I am completely against shaming people.

There’s no reason to be obese in the US apart from being lazy. The prices for vegetables, fruit are very low and there’s a wide variety. You can be overweight due to genetics, but obesity is only caused by eating fast food and drinking fizzy drinks containing a lot of sugar as well as drinking alcohol. And of course 10000 steps work wonders to your body. When I see what American people eat I’m in shock, no wonder so many people are obese.

@@82gioccia yes, eating those things are will make you gain weight and it’s a choice. Not every fat person is fat/obese because of those things. Some choose to eat healthy and exercise but it’s difficult to keep the weight off. There’s some who come down with health issues that can be related to weight gain or not. Certain medications like anti depressants and birth control can make you gain weight. Some are actually addicted to food and it’s like a drug for some. There’s fat people who go to counseling to seek help cause food addiction can be hard to overcome. Unfortunately, it’s never a one size fits all for weight loss. Most vegetables are very cheap. The issue here in the USA is healthy eating isn’t commonly taught unless you grow up in a household that follows that lifestyle.

The responsibility of another persons' body is not collective, its each to their own. The only one who can say if we afe healthy or not is our physician. You cant tell by looking at another person if they are healthy or not. Many times we praise skinny people whrn in actuality they lead a way of life that is detrimental to their health. Some body types cannot be as skinny as society views visually as healthy weight. We must understand this in order to combat obesity, too. We cant just cherry pick and make false claims and mobilize people to just become mean to others when WE CAN NOT KNOW WHAT IS HEALTHY FOR THEM. I learnt this at age of 7. There was a girl in our class who had a poor liver which lead her to have a bigger body. So it was healthy for her. Another kid at our school got treatment for his leukemia (he passed away) but with each cycle of treatment he gained so much weight, and then lost it all. So, just by looking at someone WE CANNOT KNOW WHAT HEALTH IS TO THEM AND WHAT THEY SHOULD DO WITH THEIR BODIES. We can only be informed for ourselves and inform in general, not to a target person with this very narrow view on people and weight. Shaming etc just leads to sooo many cases of error rather than anything else. Just stop. Obesity is bad for our health but so is sitting in front of a computer 3 days in a row and bearely moving, regardless of weight. We cannot judge just by looking at others what they suffer - or if they do at all.

Fact-being obese brings health complications. Obesity as a health complication shouldn’t be glorified and celebrated. However, obesity aside, those individuals should be celebrated for the wonderful personalities or achievements they have. Obese people shouldn’t be judged or deemed lazy. It’s often the confidence they can lack because of fat shaming that can bring out those child hood feelings of being fat shamed or ridiculed when clothes weren’t made plus size or they couldn’t fit in. No one should ever judge anyone. As humans we should always give out positive and motivational energy that encourage others. Not everyone is naturally thick skinned Piers. Not everyone is mentally as strong as you. Childhood plays a big part in how we mentally deal with things and to program a positive mindset. I admire you Piers. If I was in the public eye and fat shamed or anything shamed I wouldn’t cope as well as you. Credit to your parents and wonderful upbringing where you debated around the table and grew in confidence.

Many people are obese because eating has become an unhealthy coping mechanism for dealing with emotional pain. So any kind of criticism or bullying will lead them to eat. If you talk to people who were fat as kids, they'll tell you it was a vicious cycle where they were picked on for their size, and then went home to binge eat to deal with the pain. So I disagree, "shaming" doesn't help. That said, we need to stop pretending obesity is healthy. Food addiction is not healthy in the same way drug and alcohol addiction is not healthy. Research does suggest that as we're eating, a part of the brain that compares us to other people in our community plays a role in whether we keep eating or stop. So I think some people are fat because everyone they know is fat, they don't see it as a problem. I think that's a big reason that every one got fat at once, it became normalized. If you weighed 300+ pounds a century ago, you'd be the only one in your town and would have more motivation to change it.

If you had showed them kindness and support and offered advice and help, they probably wouldn't have retreated to a group that coddles them and says that you can be healthy and any weight/size.

In my view, approaching fitness with motivation would not serve you in the long run. Piers talks about a certain level of fat shaming helps him in getting back in shape. Although it may help for a short period, but when the drive and motivation (from fat shaming) dips you tend to go back to being lethargic and not paying any attention to physical exercise. This is why I believe one must focus on developing discipline and consistency. Once you have this your perspective on health and fitness would shift from achieving fast results to achieving consistency. Being in shape would then be a byproduct of this.

Fat shaming doesn’t work, but nor does over acceptance. As Yung once said “Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses. Over acceptance causes people to not feel a need to change or see their issue as an issue (and then dangerous socio-economics issues like increased prevalence that we are seeing with the trans stuff). Condemnation causes oppression and therefore more addictive behaviours. The answer is in the middle.

Some people benefit from harsh criticism, some people benefit from a kind and empathetic, but truthful talk but no one benefits from a lie. If you give a lazy person a reason to be lazy then it's impossible for them to ever fix their problems.

I agree with this statement. It's always better to hear the TRUTH, no matter how hurtful or offensive that is but it's for our own good, rather than being spoon fed lies day after day that does nothing but destroy ourselves in the long running.

I don’t agree with fat shaming and some people have complex mental health issues. However, nothing worked on my husband even when it was affecting his health. A bit of tough love eventually did the trick as I was worried about his health. Wouldn’t recommend that approach but I don’t think we should promote obesity as a body positive thing either.

How I said my haircut at Caesars was too short and too blonde? I didn’t desire a cut/color like that but don’t complain usually.

people being silent and “polite” and not telling each other their real attractions, unattractions, and concerns are what lead to fat people not getting the help they need and suffering

If you know in your heart that you have a physical issue of any kind; overweight, drinking, smoking... only one thing is going to get you to change your behavior. Your actual desire to change. I cannot stress that enough. The motivation must be internal. As a recovering alcoholic, I understand how hard it is to quit something you enjoy. Interesting fact.. At AA meetings, they serve coffee (caffeine is addictive) and have breaks when people go smoke outside (nicotine is as addictive as heroin). I'm currently in my 6th week of trying to quit smoking. I like to smoke. I have been a smoker for 37 years. I have heard every logical argument against smoking, especially from my mother... I have heard these arguments for decades. But, I never WANTED to quit. Everyone who has an unhealthy vice will hear from people, even the medical community, about how their vice is unhealthy. Being overweight is also unhealthy. Its a scientific, medical fact. But, as I said, overweight people are not going to change their behavior and seriously attempt to lose weight until they REALLY want to by their own choice. To me, it seems like the "woke" people don't think anybody should criticize anybody for anything. People who are offended by criticism and get depressed because of it should seek therapy. I think therapy would benefit most people. We don't have a right to NOT be insulted. We don't have a right to never hear differing opinions. If you are fat, overweight, obese, hefty, chunky, big-boned, or any term to describe it.... you are easily noticed in public. Anyone can point out the fat people in the room. I've been called worse things than "fat". The word FAT is not an insult, unless it's used that way. The word FAT is an adjective, which is used to add descriptive context to a noun. I digress. My point is that nobody can change unless they WANT to, and nobody is immune to criticism. People who try to shame the people who offer critiques are not doing anyone any favors.

@ Paul, very well said, it is always free will that will determine the outcome. If you are big, and don’t like people pointing it out, do something about it. We live in a victim society, sadly. But I get what you are saying, I like smoking too, but my teeth don’t, and have had to stop due to loosing some teeth and my gums that get painful because of shrinking, it’s a weird one, wish I had never started but miss having a cigarette 😊

@@phantless2203 everyone has free will to make good or bad choices. If you are not happy with your physical appearance, change it, instead of expecting people NOT to point out the obvious if they want to.

People are criticized, rightly, for smoking related illnesses. The drain on the NHS from the medical conditions caused by obesity are as great but we are told to not hurt the feelings of massively overweight people by fat shaming....

I’ve lived in China and other Asian countries and fat shaming is part of small talk, needless to say there aren’t many fat people in China or Cambodia for example. Also the sugary crap in British shops and the packaged ready meal industry is is everywhere, people are either uneducated/overworked or just plain lazy. Britain has amazing machinery and pharmaceutical and all other industries but their food culture is appalling and the working class haven’t got a clue nowadays. There needs to be an overhaul of the food culture and awareness in the UK

i dont think fatshaming works, but what i do think works is a reality check. to just take a moment and realize the consequences of enjoying temporarily for now, but hurting yourself in the longterm and how it affects you and people around you.

The person who truly loves you will tell you the truth, whether it’s about weight, alcohol consumption or other codependency issues even if one runs the risk being rejected or whatever. I am the grandmother who has told my sweethearts that chips, hot dogs & fries are darn poisonous for their health. We are what we eat. I don’t fat shame ,I shame bad eating habits leading to clogged arteries / poor overall performance . Now that they’re in their teens they ‘re more tempted to eat junk food but their love of sports and scoring that goal wins over, so far 🤞
