I think Garnts dad taught him the value of time on such a young age, tbh that's a good way to teach your children instead of harsh physical punishments that could end up wrong in so many ways.

My Dad would physically Kick me and punch me and throw me in the air across the room until his Anger cooled down. what did i learn from him, Anger, Anger, anger and hatred. sometimes i would be punished for doing nothing or even saying good morning, and got beaten because he was not in the good mood. i call him Man baby. now he regrets alot and cries to spend time with me. and i say fk off.

I think my mom had the worst method of punishment. She at one point look me dead in the eyes on told me "Son, you are not performing to the expectations i had set for you. Therefore in order to avoid causing myself needless pain I am lowering my expectations for you so I can still love you. " . I truly don't think there is anything more powerful , more motivating or more punishing than a parent telling you that. But, it worked. Full on has been keeping motivated for a few years now as I have been desperately trying to avoid another such confrontation.
@Methyll

I would've prefer this method unfortunately my mother went the opposite and try to force me up to her expectation when its clear I can't with her method. instead of learning anything good I just learn to hate schooling in general. Because what I learned is just equating her view with education and hating it. Thereby wasting my younger years, as I treat school as just something to get out of the way quickly as possible instead of it as an important part of growing up. My mom has mellowed out or just accepted reality and just go with what I'm only able to do as an adult even though she clearly view the work as subpar. Whenever she brings it up always end up in argument. Never really forgave her for it, and I made it clear to her when it is brought up

Oof both of these stories were heartbreaking to hear... I hope you both have supports around you who build you up and celebrate who you are. Just know, they judge you so harshly because *_they_* failed and they see their own worst in you (rather than seeing what is really there and who you really are). Hopefully, with time, they will come to understand that it was THEMSELVES they were disappointed with and not either of you. I am sure you are both lovely people doing your best, and that is all you need to be. Try your best, work on you and find a way to glow and grow for your *own benefit. With that base and control of your own journey and independence, you'll find those words get a bit more distant and little less hurtful. Much love and light to you both!!

What a cruel and manipulative thing to say to a child. Even in the best case scenario, she basically forced onto you an equation according to which her affection for you is positively correlated to your performance. Parental love should not be something you earn, and that idea is certainly not something you try to convince your kid is the case. You seem to have responded positively, but I hope you're doing good.

I got spanked and yelled at as a kid. I was way more scared of my mom because I knew if I whooped that she was clearly very disappointed in me. I remember telling my father once after I got whooped that he wasn't as scary as my mom. He said that didn't make any sense. I told him just because you hit harder than mom doesn't mean you're scarier. He was like fair point. As a parent I don't use these methods. I wouldn't say I 'm a gentle parent but I am not going to punish a child if it can be resolved through simple dialogue. They get a chance to correct their actions and if not its a time out and we always have a conversation after. We walk away from the time out like nothing happened and the child knows they are forgiven.

I got spanked, yelled at, washed my mouth out with soap, had time out, and the whole “I’m disappointed in you” shit with my mom, my dad hates confrontation due to his trauma with his own parents. I love my mom, I’d die for her, but there are better ways to discipline a child than physical punishments or put them through traumatic harassment. That is just unacceptable. I have issues with intimacy now. I feel weird with physical contact. I shut down when there’s yelling and my anxiety sends me into a panic attack. You don’t need to scar your child for them to better themselves.

Like Connor, I used to hide my Nintendo DS in my pillow but my parents figured that out pretty quickly. So what they did was, they took my DS and left it in the living room to charge. I remember I'd wait for hours to hear the sound of my parents' bedroom door closing, which was my cue to spring up out of bed, go to the living room to unplug my DS from the outlet, go back to my room, play games for God knows how many hours, and when I was done or my DS was running low on battery, I'd get out of bed again and plug the DS back in to charge until morning.

Harsh physical punishments is really a double edge sword for children sure it can work for certain kids, but on the flip side especially once they get older and start to have their own views and morals on life, those kids would potentially start to resent you since by that point have their own judgement they could view your physical punishment being just overheavy handed or unjustified or even hypocritical

My mom would just lecture me not calmly for 10 mins. Not the longest, but she would repeat the same point sooooo many times, it was insanity. She still does that whenever we have a disagreement. Though she’s a good and hardworking mother most of the time. She also has a temper, for example I remember I said yes to her one time, I think in reality my voice was just getting deeper, but she thought I was “speaking with attitude.” Then began yelling at me. It was a strange assumption cause I was a meek kid. Never even yelled at my mother or spoke with attitude until I was 17. Any attitude was in my physical actions/body language rather than verbal. My poor dad had to console me. A memory that sticks in my head a lot, cause not being believed hurts. But she’s chilled out a bit lately.

@@dekumdoriya I'd say my mom is guilty of that lol. Now I just chalk it off to the b**tch being mentally handicapped. She has made my life a living hell. She's the sole motivator of why I wanna leave my country. You have to constantly walk on eggshells and if there is even a 1% deviation in her plans, she goes absolutely ballistic, having panic attacks, mental breakdowns, unaliving herself, all the 9 yards. Being with her has honestly made me lose sympathy for all the mentally unstable parents out there. My mother shouldn't have been a mother, she had so many problems but had to conform to society's bs beliefs of having children and had me. Now I resent my mom and I'll probably throw her in an old age home if the time comes (sorry if I'm being apathetic, but after enduring 20+ years of torment, any form of sympathy or love goes down the drain).

I know this isn't fully related to the point being made about parents, but I remember this like it happened a few hours ago. I'm over 30 now, when I was 12 years old, I was standing in the canteen queue at secondary school year 7 and I was listening to jokes from my friends. I some how lent forward fast laughing and my mouth went through the queue barriers and smashed my front teeth. I only had one thing on my mind, I didn't care about what happened to me, but I was so terrified to scare my mother. I did not want her to cry. Anyway, in regards to father's my dad never lectured me, he did something worse. He ignored me the whole rest of the day if I did something wrong. But the next day when he woke up, he started a clean slate. It was so subtle yet super effective.

Also, for note, physical punishment and reinforcement have been decried as lesser parenting methods for reinforcing good behaviour in children for a few years/a decade now. It was already being shown to be widely problematic as a method when I was in highschool (early 00's). Intuitive parenting may sound like somecrunchy granola mom stuff, but its actually backed by science and the understanding that the PARENT tends to spawn or cause a lot of the bad habits and behaviours the kids exhibit. We need more parents taking proper responsibility for when the kids "eff up" in some way, because it's 99% of the time a failing of either the parent in oversight/teaching, or the kid in just plain cognitive functioning (kids are literally dumb and being angry at them for literally having under-developed brains and not having learned enough to know "stove hot" or "walls hard to clean" or "permanent marker ruins things" or "damage to apartment loses damage deposit and costs parents money"... is dumb. It's stupider for the parent to be actually mad. I mean, until they hit the teen years after 15 and start having less excuse. By that point, they've generally learned enough to know better on most things... which is how we end up with "teen problems" (drinking, driving problems, legal troubles, getting in fights, staying out late, sneaking out, etcetc). Even so, if you raise your children with an open quality that allows for a feeling of safety and security to talk to you about all things (which not becoming a potential violent enemy encourages) you find the kids do those things less in teen years. They party less or not at all, they have less interest in rule breaking and they're wiser with the substances. My sister and I are proof of that... Mom was pretty typical for a 90s mom born in the 60s. Except that she was ahead of the curve on the idea that parenting should be firm but open to discourse and built on trust and security ACTIVELY such that the kids understand the fact. It resulted in me avoiding a lot of the "bad stuff" when too young for it, I was often the one taking care of the idjits in the groups I hung around. I was often the one with the knowledge to help a situation. I was often the only one with a parent who could be called in an emergency without fear, to get help. I was able to call mom when drunk and not worry I was going to get my arse kicked (I was 19 by then BTW - legal drinking age here and was not interested in trying alcohol prior). I didn't touch the weed until I was an adult either, and that was not through force but education from her... she didn't shy away from the hard visuals, so I saw raw birthing video as soon as I got my first period AND I was shown, when I hit highschool age, what addiction looks like and what different drugs do to people... So I avoided those things until I was old enough to understand them and be responsible with alcohol and, now, weed. Parenting is best done on a sliding scale of careful consideration... Every blow has a negative reaction somewhere down the line, even if you don't realize the link. A lot of insecurities and feelings of anxiety are born early in the heavy hand of a parent who uses corporal punishment and fear to rule the home.

Honestly it's not the worst I've heard. Maybe not the absolute best but definitely did a lot of things right by calmly lecturing him. My mom wouldn't lecture me growing up she'd just gently scold me for like 10 seconds, but I was basically a perfectly well behaved child anyway so there was hardly ever anything to even scold me on. If I was doing something wrong it's probably because I didn't know it was wrong.

One of the best hides I ever did was with my DS one night. If my dad ever suspected mischief, he’d come in and look under the covers. A few times I’d hide a book under my pillow, but he caught on. Until one night, I heard him coming and was able to (while fake sleeping, because I slept on my stomach a lot as a kid) shove the DS under my mattress AS HE WAS COMING IN. And he looked under the bed, removed the pillowcase, shook out the covers, everything, but couldn’t find it. I never tried it again, but I remember the thrill that came from winning against an adult.

Long lectures that would go on for hours. What would seem like infinite chores that had to be done. That kinda stuff. My mom however was a complete wild card. One time she just yelled at you, then the next she just grounds you. And then of course the spankings. One time she made my brother's favorite meal for dinner but told him he gets a ham sandwich and a bottle of water while everyone else got to eat the meal she had made. Basically Dad was too much of a wuss for anything extra. Mom did whatever it took if it got the point across.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Looking back on it now I get a laugh at how creative the punishments got.

Truthfully, I don't think punishments work like parents want or intend for them to work. Beatings, getting grounded, lectures, none of them really work because they don't teach kids about the true consequences of an action, but instead immediately give a negative consequence that they'll want to avoid from then on. You either teach them to not get caught doing it or to not do it to avoid the punishment, not the consequences.

Hopefully, things are better now, but I know that those kinds of wounds run deeper than just skin deep. 🙁 you’re amazingly strong for getting through all of that and you deserve to be treated with tenderness and love instead of anger and abuse, never forget that ❤

My mother weilded a wooden spoon that she'd smack the shit out of I and my brother with when we were ever out of line. She used the same spoon on I and my older brother and I remember once when I was 10 the spoon broke as it cracked against my arm. That spoon survived +20 years of tomfoolery and she went to Macy's to buy a heavy dutier spoon at the end of the week. When my brother had his first daughter my mom bought him his own wooden spoon, same make and model.

That’s horrific, it shows she hasn’t changed and doesn’t regret it at all.

My dad talk with his mouth, My mom talked with her fist. My father talked for 2 hour, My mother "talked" for 5 minute. Guess which one i prefer. A good lecture is so effective to discipline a kid.

as a white, slavic kid, my mom would go balistic on me, in different ways depending on her mood, but my dad was more like a super powerful warrior, who had high enough power level, to make me scared without him even doing anything

I'd rather take the 2 hours lecture than getting whipped by belt, you kidding me ? I remember when i was a kid i wanted to get a KFC but my parents didn't get me KFC and i cried and next thing you know i got belted when we got home.

My dad did not spank me or lecture me, he used my likes and dislikes agaisnt me. He used my material attachment as a method of discipline. As in, anything i enjoyed, he removed from my everyday life until i did what he expected out of me, whether it was getting better grades, saying sorry or changing my bad behavior. Oh, you like this? You need this in your life? How about i take it away from you, and when my request is complete, you get what your stuff back. That was enough to keep me in line 😅😅

So those Scared Straight programs exist outside of the show and have for years. Typically they're only for kids that have already committed some kind of crime. It's not the kids that forgot to put their laundry away one too many times, it's the kids that are selling drugs or mugging people.

I bet the lecture was all about something like every action has an equal and opposite reaction and you just elaborate on all the consequences and then go further elaborating the consequences of the prior consequences. I did this to my sister when she was about to do something impulsive without my parents knowledge and I think I managed to convince her but we'll see. It's definitely fear mongering but it's in a way that allows her to think further rather than just be scared of a punishment. Don't yell, don't hit, that will only make them close up to u

You know the cliche where right before a parent hits you they say, “This hurts me more than it hurts you,” my father took that literally. Whenever I would misbehave, he would grab his belt, and threaten to hit himself with it. And that was enough for me to stop misbehaving since I didn’t want him to be hurt lol.
