Hi, here we have Bubbler Junior a DJ bubble machine. I purchased it faulty from eBay. Can it be fixed?
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

I owned this exact machine, it actually shoots out a lot of bubbles, the issue is the liquid you're using which doesn't have enough strength. Bubble solution is really cheap, so if you're planning on using it for birthday party in the future or some event, get the proper solution.

@@kalin666 I think I opened a door of the bubble world I shouldn't have, seems people take their bubbles seriously. From my understanding glycerin is used in conjunction with polymers, it's used if your homemade bubble brew has more than one polymer, it's a good additive to combine, seems glycerin alone with dish soap and water doesn't improve anything and according to soap bubble wiki a internet myth. Production companies also use thing like ph adjusters, water conditioners, I mean they use a dozen of other ingredients. In my opinion just buy the damn solution, it's cheap.
@Dee_Just_Dee
@Dee_Just_Dee Ай бұрын
@@kalin666 Yes, you're right. Glycerin is the magic ingredient. Adding some glycerin (but not too much) can make for bigger, more stable bubbles. I think that when you don't have any glycerin handy (I expect most of us wouldn't), sugar/honey/syrup can fill that role.
@snafu2350
@snafu2350 Ай бұрын
@@Dee_Just_Dee I'm guessing here, as my high school organic chemistry memories aren't that good now, but I'm thinking any long-chain water-soluble polymer should work, so a sugar syrup may well be the answer. I'm not sure, however, how that would react with a detergent such as washing-up liquid (dish soap): I suspect you would need to use soap (flakes are readily available for delicate fabrics) rather than detergent to avoid this The ratio of soap/detergent to water is also important; I expect it should be quite high, falling off with the efficacy of the solution, tho this is just a guess
@gamehulk

I learned this about 40 years ago from Mr. Wizard, but the magic ingredient you are missing is glycerin which supplies the additional surface tension for the bubbles in addition to the soap and water

It looks like the bubble ring is going in the direction, it should be be going up and out of the solution at the front of the machine. I suspect the motor will run in both directions (because it's AC) so switching it off and on again may change the direction (like old microwave turntables used to do) you could try switching on while pushing the ring by hand to get it going in the right direction. At the moment the bubbles are generated at the back of the machine which then burst when they hit the ring at the front of the machine which is why there so few bubbles.

I believe washing up liquid, water and glycerin but I think "mackjeez" said it all in his comment Vince, bubble machine liquid is extremely cheap, so no need to worry about proportions if you just buy the liquid, even those big bubble makers from toy shops just use the liquid from them, they are very cheap to buy too. Another suggestion Vince, instead of using oil on the outside, like a car battery terminal, coat the whole of the outside that's rusty with a bit of Vaseline or normal car grease, this will prevent water ingress and stop any more rusting. Love the video once again Vince, a good show for all your loyal fans.Thank you for allowing us to see this fix it video and a short sojourn into your fix it life. Again many thanks Vince. It looks like the rotating hoops would be better going the other way round. Currently the hoops are emerging from the liquid at the rear, thus they are getting popped by the hoops going into the water at the front. As it's a synchronous motor, turning it off then back on, should make it rotate the other way.

Hey! Big love for the black hot glue sticks! I got some of those and they result in a much more clean look for any repairs that are visible. The cheap clear hot glue just ends up looking gross and murky yellowish\whitish after it's been applied. I really like the look of the black hot glue sticks. I keep them around for any bodges that will be in visible areas, especially on black items. "Rubber ducky, you're the one! You make my bath time so much fun" -Ernie or Bert, I can't remember. I think it's Ernie, 90% confidence for Ernie. Damn, the corrosion on that plug reminds me of my old garbage disposal, except all 3 pins were green like that. I'm not sure if the corrosion was what broke it or if it really couldn't handle the Drãno that said it was "garbage disposal safe" Either way, I miss that good old disposal unit, as my new apartment has none. But hey! At least my dishwasher doesn't leak like my old one did. Hope you feel better with that COVID. I feel your pain, as I've had it twice. First time was before vaccine existed, second time was after I had been vaccinated already.

That motor is very similar to the ones found in countertop ice machines. They have similar fail points as well....The tray that collects the new "cubes" cracks, water gets to the spindle of the motor, its rusts up and either freezes up (from rust) or the tray continues to crack and can't connect with the spindle properly.

A couple thoughts Vince, WD is not actually a lubricant (plenty of available information regarding the topic). Kerosene and a little 3in1 might have been preferable? My other thought was to drill a weep hole through the side so that the tank cant overfill and reach the motor. Great stuff as always. (a little glycerin added in that detergent will help make bubbles.)
@marcellipovsky8222
@marcellipovsky8222 Ай бұрын
IMO Vince used the WD40 exactly for what it is intended - loosen up rusted parts. Not as "lubricant".
@urglegurgle5807
@urglegurgle5807 Ай бұрын
@beavis6363 As a bit of a heads up, WD-40 is mainly a more refined kerosene and mineral oil mix. It also comes in a can with a handy propellant to aid with penetration. So not so different to your suggestion, except the lack of a handy pre-mixed container and propellant. It may not originally have been intended as a lubricant, but it is disingenuous to say that it has no lubricating properties. You will note though that Vince did go on to lubricate with 3 in 1. To add further confusion WD-40 now have a huge range of products including proper lubricants so the whole WD-40 thing is a pedants nightmare.
@Boogie_the_cat
@Boogie_the_cat Ай бұрын
Kerosene is a bad lubricant because it evaporates in the air. I think its only use is a solvent and a flammable one at that. I don't have a chemistry degree, but am familiar with solvents and I've never heard of them being used for lubrication. They're mostly burned or used in chemical extractions, depending on the chemical and use case. Hence the definition: "able to dissolve other substances" My apologies if I'm completely wrong here, but solvent action to me is completely incompatible with lubrication. Solvents attack other compounds, so while a solvent may absorb rust (like Vince used the IPA to dislodge the rust), when the solvent dries, the rust will be left behind, which will not aid lubrication. I dunno, that's my understanding of things. I'll gladly admit I'm no expert and may be partially incorrect.
@urglegurgle5807
@urglegurgle5807 Ай бұрын
@Boogie_the_cat Yep, the solvent evaporates leaving a fine covering of the mineral oil lubricant with WD-40. This is insufficient in itself to act as a proper lubricant in a lot of cases, but the mix of solvent and lubricant is helpful to initially free up something that is stuck. This thin layer of oil can protect from corrosion, one of it’s original purposes as a water dispersant. Thus despite having some lubricating properties from the mineral oil content, WD-40 is not an appropriate alternative to proper lubrication in most circumstances, but handy to free stuff up. There’s a bit of a difference between not a lubricant, and not a suitable lubricant.
