Hello :) Love the video!! Your Black Opal looks AMAZING! As far as the black/gunmetal flakes, I thought I had some in my stock room. I am completely sold out of it. I am working on making an order to get more now :) Figure by the time I get the order made and paid (on a weekend) It should be here in a week :) I will get it up as soon as I can :) Thank you so much for your patience and understanding!! The second I saw these paints in the store I thought faux opals. I tried it on clay, sure, but also separated the larger flakes from the paint medium. It is the strangest paint medium I've ever come across but I had to experiment. You don't get a lot of flakes for the buck, the process is horribly messy, it takes a long time, and I ran the water on hot for something like 40 mins. afterward so my pipes wouldn't clog. I have to say I like the flakes from this paint better than Ice Resin Shattered Opals.

Well for faux black opal the Ice Resin Shattered Opals don't work, they are very noticeable. If you can't find the larger flakes on eBay or Etsy, just use the Ice Resin Fire Opal.

I called Plaid to see if Glitterific can be heated at all. She said absolutely not, and that even on baked clay, it is not compatible and will become sticky over time. Not sure if the resin coat would keep that from happening, so thought you should hear what she said. She also said it should be applied in a well-ventilated area. Weird that there are not instructions on the bottle to that effect! The opals look so lovely--must be another way to glue down the Mylar.

The resin takes care of that. I've kept them and I'm testing them every week since I made them, so far no problems. You can glue them with sating sculpey glaze if you're worried that they might get sticky. But I can't feel a thing, and the resin seems to be holding just fine. Thanks for the info re: mask. I'm very careful with that, one of the chemo drugs I had to have during chemotherapy left me with pulmonary apical fibrosis (hence you hear how I'm always like out of breath) so I'm very careful about anything that needs a mask. I actually use those with the carbon filter.

So pretty! Do you think this finish will be applicable for 3D objects, or maybe the resin can't handle gravity well?

I don't think it would stay in place. Try liquid Kato maybe?

Thank you for all your hard work on the faux stone tutorials. I love making the faux stones! However, I tried this tutorial and found the end result looks like black polymer clay with glitter on it. I tried a little opal flakes, I tried a lot of opal flakes and still it looks like just a bunch of glitter. And I agree with a previous comment that states the paint is thick and goopy. I also tried adding a little water to thin it out, but still thick. Any suggestions on what I’m doing wrong. I have followed your tutorial exactly and still disappointed. TIA

Did you get the proper black mylar flakes? I said that I tried over a dozen black mylar flakes before I found the proper ones. It won't work otherwise. Yes, the paint is pretty much a gel. You use it to glue the mylar flakes in place.

Yes it is. Use only the large flakes when you pick them up from the bag. Also, try to avoid leaving too many small glitters (esp the ones with geometric shape_ from the Gliterrific and remove all the whitish ones- use it essentially more like a glue. If I could find something with the same consistency as the base gel the glitters are in, transparent like that, I would use that, but I couldn't find that anywhere. You can, of course, use just plain epoxy glue for the flakes but I found it to be a tad shiny when it dries. I tried with some other stuff, even with Elmer's glue but I found it was still a bit too shiny under the resin. I am working on another variant, using the same black flakes, so I won't get people to have to buy again stuff.

I love this look in theory but for me the Glitterific paints are unusable. I bought a variety pack and they are gunky. I tried adding water, shaking up,they aren’t at all a paint they are gel with clumps of glitter. For me they are way too much work to get a result one out of ten tries. I know it’s just me !! The one time I got some onto my raw clay they never dried, way too late for refund. Your work is beautiful though!
