As an aside about The Brothers Hildebrandt...... Greg and Tim were twins who had an incredible & unique bond. They shared the same style! They both worked on their most famous paintings together; one would sleep while the other painted, and then they'd switch - which is how they were able to meet such tight deadlines. Obviously, in solo projects, there are ways of spotting differences in their individual styles - other than their signatures! Tim worked much better with darker hues and moodier subject matter & light sourcing. Greg worked extremely well with bright, colorful subject matter. I could go on for hours why both appealed to me and my faves by each. They also did the cover for a 1977 album I love, Starcastle's "Citadel" (who sound a lot like 70's YES). Tim's death in 2006 had a profound impact on me, as I didn't realize he was so ill and there'd been pictures of him with his daughter and Greg taken just a week or two earlier that surfaced on MySpace, so I thought he was going to recover. I own 6 of their art books (4 by The Brothers Hildebrandt and 1 each by Greg & Tim), plus a calendar by Tim, and at least 4 trading card sets.

Love your enthusiasm for cover art. I call it ‘curb appeal’; great curb appeal gets me every time.

Luis Royo has published some large art books that include some of the covers you have shown, with early stages of the images. I know of at least three. I own two of those. He did the art for some early omnibuses of Laurell K. Hamilton's work, one of which I gifted to a cousin. I have on hand a sci-fi novel with textured cover art by him, Gorgon Child by Steven Barnes (TOR).

Great Vid! A few of my favs: Richard Anderson - more of a film concept artist but the covers he has done have been fantastic in my opinion. He has a very messy, broad brush stroke style. Very recognizable. Personal favourite is from The Band Series by Nicholas Eames. Marc Simonetti - it's a tragedy that he does so few covers in North America. Most of his work is for Brazil or french publishing houses, or for special editions put out by places like centipede or grim oak press. I adore his style though. He puts a sense of scale into his work that isn't matched by any other artist in my opinion. Many of his works keep the characters small, dwarfed by a massive background structure or object. The only work published over here with his art that I'm aware of is by Michael J. Sullivan. His best work is for the Brazilian version of the original Mistborn trilogy. I was lucky enough to score a full print of all three covers in one illustration and it is one of my most prized possessions. Alan Lee is also the GOAT. He has truly designed the blueprint for the look of lord of the rings. Any read through of the books has me picturing his artwork constantly. Thanks for the video, been loving your channel :)

Darrel K Sweet is goated. I’ve spent a lot of time just analyzing the runelords book covers.

Sweet has always been one of my favorite. There are tons of obscure fantasy and science fiction books from the 80's and 90's with his art on them. I like to browse the sci-fi/fantasy section at used book stores and find his art on so many books, he has amazing stuff most of us have never seen before. I would love to see a catalogue of all his covers, and without any words or graphics in the way.

I think the rationale publishers have about these type of covers are they "look dated and aren't marketable" any more... Which honestly, maybe has a little truth to it, but still, I'd take these covers over contemporary any day of the week.. absolutely beautiful.

My all-time favourite cover art is probably the Doctor Who novel Cat's Cradle: Witch Mark by Peter Elson, i just love the dark orange colours and setting sun and the composition of the characters, it's the only book cover i've ever thought: Wow, i wish i could hang that on my wall even if the novel itself isn't that great

Not long from now you can just take a picture of the cover, ask AI to remove the text over it and make it bigger while keeping the quality and print it to your wall ❤

I have huge problems with Sweet. Mostly on his WoT covers. Some of the things that stick out to me are: Eye of the World: Moiraine looks like a pigmy on a miniature pony. Knife of Dreams: Perrin looks like a short 50 year old fat man. The Gathering Storm: Rand's arm (the good one) looks like it's about a foot shorter than it should be. There are just a lot of his covers with people somehow out of proportion. I do like his cover of Wizardborn a lot though. One of my favorite covers is Prince of Fire and Ashes cover by Romas.

I need to look for the other DKS / art videos you mention! I wish you would've listed links in this one! Also, with no disrespect intended, friend: It's pronounced SHUH-NARR-UH (not shann-er-uh). You can verify on Terry Brooks site, Google pronunciation, and the TV show. 😊😉💜💜💯💯

If you search “Top 10 Fantasy Book Covers Ranked” you’ll find my video. And In his interview with Hank Garner on KZfaq, Terry pronounced it “Shann-er-uh” and that the fanbase and the tv showrunners started calling it “Shuh-narr-uh”, so he accepts that pronunciation but he calls it Shann-er-uh. He also pronounced it this way in his interview with Peter Orullian. So either is ok with him, he just has one way of saying it and the fandom has another way. I use to pronounce it Shuh-Narr-uh until u heard him on the Hank Garner podcast

The death of good cover art is really a tragedy. Last week, I went into a Barnes and Noble for the first time in over a year and i was stunned at how garish and lazy the cover art was. Why? To appeal to 36 year old women of course. Apparently they're the only demographic that reads and collects books.
