We love the older Remington's and that is why we have them. It just seems like the craftsmanship and quality that went into the firearms was so much better. If you have one that hasn't gotten any issues, take care of it, maintain it and it should last you a lifetime. Love my 1100 and you will hear people say that the 742 and 750 receivers seemed to be patterned off the 1100 and 870. I know they were popular guns back in the 70's and 80's, and they were popular with my in-laws. That is what made me decided I wanted one, then after getting it I decided I wanted to try and get the whole BDL line, the semi-auto, pump, bolt all the way to the 22's rifles. Yes, if you find one at a gun store or pawn shop, you really need to check it closely. I know when I purchased one for both of my son's I checked them out very closely. There is just something about those older firearms Patrick. The wood is so much better looking, the grain and the finish really stands out. Patrick the old ways, as you mentioned, to me are the best ways. Just like the old days of hunting, deer camps, coffee perking over an open fire, guys setting around the fire telling stories of their daily adventures trying to pursue the ole buck. Those days are slowly disappearing from the old traditions of hunting. You watch TV hunting shows, and they are on some farm or pay to hunt property with cabins and houses that cost more than what I will ever be able to afford. They have running hot and cold water, electricity, set on sofa's watching TV and using microwaves to cook popcorn. The old days of tent camping, campers or the old cabin thrown up with sawmill lumber, oil lamps or propane lamps, propane heat and getting water from spring are slowly going away. Our grandchildren will never know the real world of hunting, not like our grandparents and fathers did. You mention Hazard, KY, my mom was born in Hazard County, KY. My grandfather and grandmother on my mother's side was from that area before they moved to WV. My great uncle was from Rose Hill, VA, not to far from the VA, TN, and KY boarder. Thanks, Charles. I know my first trip to deer camp, back in 1982, Denny had that Remington 742 BDL 30-06, and I just fell in love with that rifle. I actually got to use his rifle on the last day of the hunt. I was using, since it was my first-time deer hunting and I didn't have a rifle, my father-in-law let me use an old 16-gauge pump shotgun. On Friday of that week, Denny harvested a 6-point with his 742. That Saturday morning, he told me I could use his rifle if I wanted. After holding it and hunting with it, I was hooked and had to get one. It took me several years to get one, but when I did I held on to it to this day. Glad I was able to help. The BDL grade is the deluxe model which has the basket weave style checkering on the 742 and 760 models, as well as a Monte Carlo stock. On the 700 BDL it is a deluxe model with a fancy checkering, not basket weave, and has a Monte Carlo stock. Also the 700 BDL rifles have the drop floor plate and the ADL 700’s do not. Hey, I have a 25-06, but mine is a Marlin XL7. I have taken one deer with it, a decent 5-pointer. Since then, it has set in the safe. I actually bought it to take out mid-west back when my wife's sister and her husband lived out there. I thought that maybe one time we would go and visit, and I would maybe go on a antelope hunt. Well, they ended up moving back to Ohio. So, I took it hunting and harvested one deer with it. Of course, it is a Marlin and not a Remington. Those older rifles are great rifles and as long as you take care of them, they will last a lifetime, maybe even two lifetimes when you pass it down to your children. He had the ADL, he ended up with a BDL, but got rid of it because he felt it was to heavy, he had a carbine, and he even had a commemorative version of the 742. Congrats!! If it was a collector, I would expect it to be like new. Not many people want or even collect the 742 due to the bad rap it has gotten over the years. But if the one you have is like new, you should have many years of use out of it. That is if you plan to use it hunting or occasional outings to the range. My dad cleaned his then he used hairspray and wipes that off until it was rubbed but still dry. He had that gun for thirty years until he traded it to a friend for his 7mm Magnum Ruger that I now have. My parents get venison from all kinds of people so they have no need to hunt anymore. I have cleaned many deer with him from some random friend who calls up.

Don't know much about the 750, of course you can tell I am the 742 and 760 fan of Remingtons. I know the 742 has a bad rap, but a lot of that isn't the rifle's fault nor Remington's fault. Semi-auto's are very finicky and just like an AR, there are places that require oil and then there are places that just require grease. The slide tube under the forearm has to be taken care of periodically. A lot of people don't tear their firearms down to clean them. They run a brush and a patch down the barrel and their done. Also, a lot of people, because the rifle is semi-auto, they want to fire it as fast as they can. The 742 is not a battle rifle, it is a hunting rifle, but some people want to see how fast they can throw lead down range. I just read an article review on the Remington Woodsmaster 750 by Jon R. Sundra on the Rifle Shooter website from 2010, after seeing your comment. Seems like the 750 is a very good rifle. I had never heard of the 750 until your comment, I knew the 7400 and 7600 replaced both the 742 and 760. I did not know until I read the above mentioned article that the 7400 had been discontinued and replaced with the 750. If I would ever need to get another semi-auto, I may have to look into a used 750, especially now that Remington and RemArms is no more. Well at least the original company. You have a nice rifle, Charlie. These older Remingtons' are awesome rifles. If you take care of them, they should last a lifetime. The 742 has been given a bad rap, but I honestly believe it isn't justified. Semi-auto is extremely hard to take care of in regard to cleaning them. You can't remove the bolt without completely disassembling the entire rifle. There are areas that have to be greased, not oiled, and I honestly think that is where some of the issues with the 742 came from. If the 742 would have kept the same bolt design of the 740, I don't think the 742 would have had any issues. Hold on to that gem you have my friend, they just keep going up in value. @JnJTrueOutdoorAdventures get shot 3 times a year to make sure it's sighted in . Cleaned oild greased completely. Then taken hunting usly kill 4 to 5 deer a year with it . Accricey is incredible . I will never e er part with this rifle just love the gun love the videos.

Like you said it showed a lot of skill and craftsmanship that went into those firearms. I have a Marlin 336 chambered in 35 Rem that belonged to my oldest brother-in-law. He passed away in 2007. When I got the rifle, I cleaned it and put it in the safe. I have said I would like to hunt with it one time and hopefully harvest a buck with it. If I did do that, then it would probably only see the light of day when I would take it out to wipe it down. Family air looms hold so many memories and you don't want anything to happen to them. Matt, the muzzleloader finger is getting better, but it is still tender, and the tip of the finger is still numb. I sure wish the video camera would have been running when that happened. Just watched your video and left a comment. Congrats on the harvest. That is a beautiful rifle, but I know you already know that. So awesome that you were able to take a deer with it this year. I saw that GoPro attached to the scope. Would like to see what mounting hardware you used for that. I usually don't take my firearms down to that extent, but after my brother-in-law had that problem, I will occasionally tear down the rifle to give it a very thorough cleaning, especially if I have had it out in the elements much. If my memory serves me well enough, I don't think my brother-in-law ever took his rifle down that far to clean. He always did the inside of the barrel, and the bolt and the outside. They are awesome rifles. I haven't hunted with mine in years, I have taken deer with it, as well as the 760 BDL that I have. Both are in 30-06. My go to now has been my Model 700 BDL in 30-06, but I haven't taken a deer with it yet. This year though, I got a new rifle, a HOWA 1500 in 308 and that is what I have been hunting with this past week. More on that when the videos start rolling out from deer camp. Now my 742 BLD has become a safe queen and only gets out a few times a year for a inspection and cleaning. I may take it to the range so it can bark again, at least 3 shots. Thanks, Steve. Nice to meet another Remington fan, and owner of some Remington history. Never knew it as the hump back, but you're right it does have that hump on the back of the receiver. If it wasn't for the bolt chewing the receiver, to me there would me no problem with that rifle at all. Of course, keep it clean should be every firearm owners duty, and when I mean clean I mean a thorough cleaning. Not just wipe it down run and brush and patch down the barrel, there is more to cleaning a firearm than just that. I have always been a thorough cleaner of my firearms. They are tools and for tools to function properly, they need cleaned. I have always taken my firearms, whether new or used, completely down and cleaned them. Dennis, that is us, we are Remington fanatics, as I mentioned in the video. I forgot to mention I even have the Remington Model 552 Speedmaster 22-caliber rifle. It is the ADL version, sure wish it was the BDL version. I also have a old Remington Model 514 single shot 22-caliber rifle. All the Remington's I have are older Remington's. The newest Remington that I have is the Remington Model 700 ADL synthetic stock and the Remington 870 Express that I bought brand new back in the late 80's. Appreciate you watching and commenting. That's when i started hunting and have taken 4 deer with that rifle and more with my other rifles over the years. That Marlin is very special to me as my Dad bought it for me and it will stay in the family and be passed down. Like I said, i love seeing the guns and the stories behind them. Yes, that is right. It is similar to oil and greasing and AR. There are places you would oil and specific places that you would apply a lite coat of grease. A lot of the issues with the bolt was from people not applying grease where needed and just using oil. Thanks for watching and commenting. Juddie

I like you have traded firearms back in my younger days. Finally, I decided no more, and I hold onto them when I get them. I still wish I would have held onto my rifle that I took my first deer with. It was a WW2 German Mauser chambered in 7x57 Mauser. It was all original and still had the German markings on it. Everything was matching. But I was young, and I wanted a more modern rifle, and I traded it off. We learn don't we, Rick? I don't know about these new rifles, no matter who the manufacturer is. @@JnJTrueOutdoorAdventures my friend had a Mauser that would shoot. Finally we found out what his problem was. It still had all the gunk all over it from when he bought the rifle. A little bit of cigarette lighter fluid with some rags to clean out a little and a little fluid inside the bolt and the thing shot just fine and even had a fireball come out the end of it

Thanks, Dan. Love the 742's and I heard about the recall. I don't think now they can fix them, there are no receivers to be had. I know my brother-in-law contacted them when his jammed opened, thinking it was the receiver issue (this was before he found the rust under the forearm) and what they wanted to do then was have him send it in and they would give him so much off on a 7400. He told them that he didn't want the 7400, that he wanted the 742. He even went as far as to ask them if the wood from the 742 could be put on the 7400. Of course, they told him no due to design changes in the 7400 rifles. So, he still has his 742, but keeps it put up, I don't know if he hunts with it at all or not. I know he got another deer rifle to hunt with. That is something I will have to check into regarding the grain of bullet. All my other 30-06's I hunt with a 150-grain bullet, of course I reload my ammo. Maybe I should look into buying factory ammo for the 742 in 150 grain rounds. You are welcome, Chuck. You have a fine selection of Remingtons there. The first time I was exposed to the Remington 742 was back in the late 70's. My father-in-law had one in 243 and it was an ADL, then his next to oldest son had a 742 BDL in 30-06. I feel in love with the 742 BDL and kept looking for one until I found one when I could afford it. Then later I bought my son one as well. Back in the day, Remington made some really quality firearms. I know the 742 gets a bad rap, but from my research and my personal experience, if you take care of them and oil where it needs oil and grease where it needs greased, and use them for what they were intended for, hunting, they are awesome rifles. Since I have the 742, 760 and 700 all in BDL grade, I would love to have those same models in the ADL grade. I also have three 870's, two of them are Wingmaster, one is a slug shotgun, and the last one is the 870 Express (the everyday man's affordable shotgun). The Model Four looks a lot like the 742 ADL rifle. Those are two really good rounds, I have only used 30-06, but a friend of ours has a 270. If I remember right, a 270 is mainly a necked down 30-06 casing with the .277 (270) bullet. Supposedly the 270 is a flatter shooting bullet than the 30-06. Since the two people that got me into deer hunting, my father-in-law "Charlie" and my brother-in-law "Dennis" used 30-06, that was what I wanted. I used various calibers until I got the 742 BDL, from 7x57 Mauser, 30-30 and 35 Rem, but when I got the 742 I have mainly stuck with the 30-06 as my main rifle. I have hunted with 223 and 300 Blackout, but those tend to be my backup rifles. Appreciate you watching and commenting Donald. Juddie - J & J TOA

Lonnie, I have had many rifles over the 40 years of hunting, and my favorite to this day is the older Remingtons! Even in the shotguns. It is almost like my hunting knives, I have the Old Timer series, from Schrade, Drop Point, Sharp Finger and the Deer Slayer that I have had since the late 70's/early 80's that I love. That was back when Schrade was a great company and the steel used in the blades was awesome. Now that this new company owns the name, I won't buy one at all. I guess I am really showing my age here. George they are great rifles and your story sounds about like mine. My very first-time deer hunting, I didn't have a rifle, heck, I didn't even hunt. So, my father-in-law loaned me his 16-gauge pump shotgun and slugs. I hunted with it all week. Then on Friday, my brother-in-law, Denny, who had the 742 BDL harvested a buck. Thanks, Chad. Yep there is something about blued steel and walnut!! We all have those favorite rifles; I really like my 700 ADL with the parkerized finish on the metal and the synthetic stock. Like you said, you can go out in any kind of weather and not worry about the finish or warpage from the wood getting wet. Just dry it off, wipe it down with an oil rag and your good to go. Another reason I like my Mossberg Maverick in 308 WIN, it is like the 700 ADL, parkerized finish on the metal and a camo synthetic stock. That rifle of yours has taken a lot of game!! That is awesome Eric. I know they made left hand models and like you said the check rest was on the opposite side and the safety was reversed. I think the shell ejection though was still on the same side as the right-hand model. Love the older Remingtons like ours. That 700 BDL that I have, and you have worries a lot of people, but you just have to know how to treat the rifle. Open up the floor plate and dump the 3 rounds out, make sure to point the rifle in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger, place the safety in fire and work the bolt to remove the one from the chamber. Some of my buddies have told me that I can send mine in and have that fixed to be more like the newer 700's to where the bolt will open even on safe, but I don't want to let my rifle out of my sight. I hear you, Clifton!! I have gotten rid of so many different rifles and shotguns over the years, really back in my younger years, that I wish I still had those firearms. About 35 years ago I decided that when I got a firearm, that it was never leaving my site and I have held on to them. My first deer was taken with a WW2 German Mauser chambered in 7x57, that thing at that time still had all the German markings on it. Like a fool, about 2 years later after harvesting my first deer I got rid of it in a trade. It took me many years to find another, but it wasn't a German Mauser, it was an Argentine Mauser and I bought it. I haven't hunted with it, but I wanted it and I bought it. The 180 grain Remington Core-Lok was my in-laws go to round for 30-06, and mine for years. It wasn't until I got into reloading that I started using a 150-grain bullet. Yes, they are Tim. Sorry to hear about the theft at your sister's house. Nothing worse in this world than a thief. Just make sure that if you do run across one is to check the inside top of the receiver, just behind the bolt and above the trigger housing for those chew marks. As long as the marks, if any, aren't deep it should be okay to hunt with. I have seen some that just had shiny spots where the marks were starting and then I have seen some that I would be afraid to try and fire because the marks were so deep. Now John that is a fine rifle right there. I have only seen a few of those and I had thought about getting one in 35 Rem, but since I have my deceased brother-in-law's Marlin 336 in 35 Rem, I think I will just stay with that. I went looking for ammo just before rifle season, I wanted to hunt with his rifle at least once, and I couldn't find any ammo locally and even online everyone was out. Finally, after season was over I found several boxes at Dunham's finally. I guess if I want to hunt with that caliber, I am going to have to get dies for it. One box of Remington 35 Rem was $47.99!!! I couldn't believe it. But I haven't bought factory ammo in years. I bought a box and will get another one or two later. It is only 10 months till 2023 deer season. His must be the ADL version, it has checking but not the basket weave checkering and probably doesn't have the Monte Carlo stock. If he bought it used, and it came with a scope, you are always best to check the scope out thoroughly for issues, or just replace with a new one. They are great rifles and if taken care of properly will last a long time. Yes, air temperatures will cause a scope to fog. I remember many years ago, I had a nice 742 and it may have been an ADL at the time, but I had the rifle zero'd and it shot great. While doe hunting in Greenbrier County, WV, the scope fogged up on the inside of the scope. I had high rise mounts, but it was hard to get the sites in good, so I went back to camp and removed the scope and the mounts. I did get a doe with it using the open sites. The reason the scope fogged was due to it being shot during the summer and not being checked in cold temperatures. At the range I had a clear view, no issues at all, but when those temperatures got to the 30's and you took the rifle out in the cold temperatures the inside was fogged up. @@JnJTrueOutdoorAdventures yeah he replaced the scope with a new one. The rifle also was jamming up and a Smith put newer rails in it or something like that. He shoots a magazine full at the target range and maybe one or two shots a year so it'll be good until he stops hunted. He got me into bringing a backup gun just in case something happens. Once I had a 30-30 Savage when I was in high school that the sling came out and the rifle stuck in the mud barrel first. First year deer hunting. It was on Sunday after church the last day of the season and we were walking a little strip of corn and chasing the deer out. My dad got a running deer at over 300 yards. He shot his rifle once a year to sight it in too.

You're welcome. I have always loved these old classics. I was very fortunate to find this one and the other two that I got. I gave one to my youngest son, and then my youngest son and I went together to get my oldest son one of them. They are hard to find, sure hope you can locate one. Just remember, remove the magazine, take a flash light and look at the top of the receiver just above the trigger mechanism and look for signs of the bolt chewing the top of the receiver. If there are lite shiny spots, and if you run your finger across and it is smooth your are okay, but if your fingernail catches on grooves you might want to keep looking. Jerod nor I have ever had any issues with ours. Of course, we don't try to rapid fire or anything like that. It took me several years to find one that I felt good about, but I finally found it and got it. Then I spent a few more years looking for another for Jerod and I found him one. My family and I used to hunt in the national forest in Pocahontas county, but we were able to get a lease in Wayne County in 2001 and have been hunting there since. Right before we were to go, my son was involved in an accident and we didn’t go. We were able to lease the land in 2001 and hope to hold onto it as long as we can. I have 3 sons and 7 grandsons, so I hope our hunting traditions continue for many years to come. I just started videoing a couple of years ago. I started so I could preserve the memories, but have really enjoyed the KZfaq experience. I’m learning a lot from your videos. Thanks for sharing them.

That was one of my reasons for starting this adventure 13 years ago, so my grandchildren could see real hunting instead of the stuff they show on TV that makes it look so easy and that there is a deer around every tree. From there it has grown. I have made many mistakes along the way and could still do better, but I believe what we are doing and how we do it is what people want to see. Real hunting and I have seen that the deer camp videos are a lot of what people want to see. Especially since we started doing the in camp videos as well as the hunting. There is just something about the BDL grades in the 742 and the 760 that catches the eye. Yep, back in my 20's, I guess you could say I was a horse trader. I was lucky if I had a rifle for an entire year, sometimes two, what I would give if I had some of those back!!! By the time I hit 30, I realized I should hold onto them. I think one reason may have been a few times I got burned on the trade. This one will stay with me until it is passed down to one of my grandchildren. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Thanks, Josh. Josh, not everyone likes the 30-06, but it has almost been around as long as the 30-30. Everyone has their favorite calibers to hunt with. I do have a few favorite calibers, but I don't know if I have an all-out favorite. I like the 30-06, but my first buck was taken with a 7x57 Mauser in an old WW2 German Mauser rifle. I have fond memories of that rifle and that caliber. Then I hunted with an old Winchester 94 in 30-30, then I have a Marlin 336 in 30-30 and then I had the Marlin in 35 Rem. Then I moved up to the 30-06. All of the previous rifles and calibers I liked, but for years following I hunted with the 30-06. I hunted one year with a Marlin XL7 chambered in 25-06. I had gotten this rifle to take out to the mid-west when my wife's sister and her husband lived there. I thought we might go for a visit and I would hunt antelope maybe. Well, they moved back to Ohio before we ever had a chance to go, so I used it for deer hunting here in WV. Took a nice 5-point buck with it. Then I got the Mossberg Maverick in 308 Win. With this rifle I have taken two nice 8-points. So, as you can see, I really don't have a favorite caliber, as long as they do the job is all that I care about. I have heard a lot of people talking about the 6.5 Creedmoor, but right now at this point, I am not interested in that caliber. I hear it is supposed to be a great round. Hey, Kevin. Well, I have several cameras. This video was shot with my GoPro Hero 7 Black on a tripod. Sometimes I use my iPhone 12 to shoot some videos. When hunting we use Canon Vixia HF R800 and a GoPro Hero 8 Black. Have added other cameras to our arsenal of gear like the Tactacam action cameras that we can mount to our bows or rifles. Thanks, Jay. Love my Remingtons! Not sure yet on rabbit hunting, having to many other things going on. I would like to get out and do some squirrel hunting, haven't done that in a long time. I do have a friend at work that has rabbit dogs and he said we might get together some weekend and try and do some rabbit hunting. Of course, he said that I could hunt, he just likes listening to the dogs and watching the chase unfold. I have only seen a few grouse on our lease in the past 12 to 14 years of being on the lease. I remember in the early 80's, on another lease I was on, you could set in the woods and hear them drumming almost everywhere. Almost like chipmunks chirping in the woods. I think one of the issues around here is the coyote problems that we have now. You know back in the late 70's and early 80's you didn't hear a coyote in the woods, or if they were there you never saw one. Now days, you can't set in a tree stand during an evening hunt without hearing those things. Heck, you can be setting there and see them cross the woods. The worst thing that could of happened in this state was the introduction of coyotes. Not saying we didn't have any to begin with, but now we have a problem. Thanks for watching and commenting. I would love to have one of the Remington 742's in a 308 round. I have always been a 30-06 fan, but since 2017 and 2022 I have been using a 308 round and love it. I took my largest buck in my life in 2017, an 8-pointer, and then in 2022, I took another 8-pointer. I have never hunted with the 270 but know several guys who have 270's and they love them. Since both of my sons have the exact same rifle now, I guess this one will go to one of my grandchildren when I am gone. I bought Jerod one before he was old enough to buy a firearm, and then my oldest son, Jerod and I bought him one for his birthday. I think they went with the aluminum receiver to help lighten the rifle, but also it was cheaper to make over the steel ones. I am sure the steel receivers would have added another pound or more to the total weight of the rifle. If it would have been made of steel the 742 would last several lifetimes, I am sure. The older Remington's are awesome firearms. Seems now days people are wanting the older ones, I am sure that it is due to the better craftsmanship. Not sure when the issue with the bolt and receiver first showed up, but you would of thought Remington would redesigned. Well, they did that is when they came out with the Model 74 and then the 7400. I also use to be a gun trader back 40+ years ago. Stopped trading guns many years ago. If you know what to look for you can find a good 742, maybe even a 740, never owned a 740. The 742 is a great gun, but you have to know how to do the maintenance on them and keep up with the maintenance. You can't just take them out and shoot and then set them away for 6 months or a year. My son and I both haven't had any issues out of ours. I wouldn't be afraid at all to take it deer hunting. That is really impressive hunting there, Paul. I have been hunting for 43 years, started hunting when I was 20 yrs old. Never shot a black bear, but always had my bear stamp, when it comes to deer, don't think I am anywhere close to your number, maybe not even half that number. Thanks for watching and commenting. These are getting harder and harder to find. I found several on eBay, but my gosh they are expensive, and you have to be careful, you need to make sure they are for 30-06, 25-06, 270 (these are based on the 30-06 cases). Frank, it really depends on the condition of the rifle, especially on the inside of the receiver above the trigger. If that part is fairly smooth to smooth without any of the deep bolt thread gouging, I would say anywhere between $400 and $450. Of course, in today’s market it is hard to provide a price. With Remington, original Remington closed a lot of people have really skyrocketed their prices. Just like Marlin, the prices of an original Marlin 336 30-30 made let’s say in the 70’s has gone out the roof. I remember 15 to 20 years ago picking them up for $200 to $250, now you can’t touch them unless you get a loan. Thanks for watching and commenting. Juddie

The 742's are awesome, doesn't matter if they are the ADL or the BDL grade. With the 742 you have to be careful; you have to make sure that you don't use a 760 magazine with a 742. The reason I say this is because the 742 magazine has a slide button on the left side of the magazine so you can release the bolt when it locks back. The magazine for a 760 does not have the slide button on it. The 760 magazines will work but instead of locking the bolt back on the 742, after the last round the bolt will just close. I did check at Brownells website, and they have them but are out of stock. I did find several on eBay, I just did a search for Remington 742 magazines and started scrolling down the page. I found several 4-round magazines, as well as large capacity, and I made sure to look at the pictures of those 4-round magazines to see if they had the button slide that releases the bolt. No, Jamie, I don't reload for that caliber. Just the firearms that I have is all that I load. When I started out reloading, I was just going to do 30-06, then I got the 30-30 dies, 308 dies, and some other rifles dies for the rifles I own, and then 9mm, 45, 40 and 38/357 dies. I have had many people ask me whether I reloaded for one caliber or another, I have also had people ask me if I would reload for them. I would explain that I only reload for myself and my son. I have heard people call them that, but the 742 is a great gun, but you have to know how to do the maintenance on them and keep up with the maintenance. You can't just take them out and shoot and then set them away for 6 months or a year. I remember one year, many years ago, my brother-in-law, Dennis, had one that jammed on him. Come to find out he had never taken the forearm off that rifle. After many years of usage and not removing the forearm to properly service the rifle the tube and spring for the action that are under the forearm had rusted. The jam was cause by a flake of rust that got wedged in the slide action under the forearm. He thought that is rifle had developed the grooves in the receiver and his bolt had actually jammed. That was not the case. Once he removed the forearm, clean the tube, the action and spring his rifle was fine. I have also heard that people were buying aftermarket 5 round and even 10 round magazines, this also caused jamming issues. I know that a lot of people will give the 742 down the road, but properly taken care of the 742 is a nice rifle. Thanks for watching and commenting. Juddie - J & J TOA

Some people have had bad experiences with the 742 and some have not. Sorry to hear that you did. Don't know your entire history with yours, whether you bought it new and had problems or if you bought it used and the problems were already there. As I mentioned in the video, some of these rifles, if not taken care of properly would develop the gouges in the back top part of the receiver and start jamming. Aftermarket magazines would cause issues with jamming, not cleaning the slide rod, spring, and bolt slide under the forearm would cause issues if it rusted. I know what Remington's stance was on them. My brother-in-law had an issue, which he thought was the receiver issue at first, then found out that it was the slide rod had rusted and a piece of rust and wedged between the slide rod and bolt slide and caused his to jam. But he had called Remington before he discovered the problem under the forearm, they told him basically what they told you, send it to them with a check for "X" amount of dollars and he would get a brand new 7400. He didn't want a 7400, so he kept it. That is when he discovered the issue with the rust under the forearm. The ones that Jerod and I have have been good to us, not to say that we couldn't have an issue at anytime. Of course, we both have gotten away pretty much from using a semi-auto and use bolt action rifles now. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Juddie - J & J TOA

Well, Steve, then I must of gotten one of the good ones, as well as my father-in-law and my brother-in-law. We had no problems getting 3 shot groups right at or under an inch at 100 yards. Deer in Greenbrier County bit the dust many times between the three of us. This rifle was very, very popular back in the day, the only issue I ever heard anyone say about the 742's, whether the ADL or BDL models, was the issue with the receiver getting chewed up over time. There is really only two ways this rifle could jam, well maybe three I heard of another, but the first two is the top inside of the receiver is chewed up so bad it jams. The second one is the guide rod under the forearm isn't properly maintained and it rusts so bad that the action gets jammed back. And now for the third one, and I am not positive about this, if you don't have the original magazine or a replacement magazine from that era, the newer replacement ones would cause it to jam.
