Dear Tiffany Poon, please do NOT underrate yourself, be aware that even though you are still young, you are amongst the most liked Classical pianists in the world. Its NOT only your ability as a pianist that people like about you, its the sweet person that you are. Keep up the good work, little star who shines so bright !!

I believe this is your best vlog so far. Your reaction to beautifully perform music as well as your description of how you feel when one is not performing very well are right on. I believe his work has such a grant park from beginning to end because he has practice very slowly to experience the effect oneNote has or another, one cannot hear these effects if they play at tempo during practice. But if one slows it all down in the effective one note and how it comes from the one before it’s more sensed. Then when the piece is brought to tempo all that understanding is part of each phrase.

This is what my aim ultimately is with my sight reading skill. the generation of Richter and Ogdon did not capitalise on it. Recording companies and pianists must have been fools not to preserve and record composers from these two great pianists. They themselves force the public to hear music perfectly but they themselves listen to the mistakes of the sight readers.

I think this type of vlogs are amazing to open people’s minds (people who only listen to pop/rock/hip-hop) and show them that music is a world much deeper than that. You are sharing very valuable insights that could spark some curiosity in people and make them get closer to this magical world of the music of the greatest composers in human history :) I’m happy you had that experience!

Juan Fernando Estrada A fan of Sokolov myself I really enjoyed her speech but I don’t agree with your condescendant comment about pop/rock/hip-hop. Some pop/rock/hip-hop fans do just the same about classical music finding it’s boring and always similar which is probably what you think about pop/rock/hip-hop. The purpose of music is not to win the contest of respectability but to do the job. Feeding the emotional of people it was made for. You probably don’t need pop/rock/hip-hop to get a sense of life, well pop/rock/hip-hop fans generally don’t need classical music either. There’s absolutely no need to downgrade a musical heritage against another to make one more valuable.

@@rampgamercracka4258 This is a very interesting question. Not because the answer is "none". But because the answer works from the perspective of many genres. Do Hip hop, Jazz or Pop Music do the same as classical ? Quick answer "no". Does classical do the same as Hip Hop etc...? Quick answer "no". Do these different music fullfill the emotional of their respective audiences ? "yes". This is the purpose of music, this is it's sociological role, fullfilling people emotional state, making them share time and feelings together. Depending your cultural field, all the adjectives work with every music. Some find classical super boring, some find gospel music limited, some can talk for days demonstrating "the Beatles" worked because of the ignorance of the masses. Even if I would agree with you that some music are certainly more complex than others, trying to build a hierarchy is a nonsense. Don't forget that mediocrity is everywhere, in pop music and... classical.

@@djembesoloshorts Oh but see mediocrity exists in every artist in pop music, and none that I can think of in classical music. No one actually finds classical music boring after hearing a Paganini caprice, a Rachmaninoff prelude, a Chopin Etude, and yet classical musicians dislike pop even more after being exposed again to it

He's my favorite too! To me, Sokolov is in a league of his own. First time I heard him live, in 1998, he played Rach 3 and made a huge impression on me. A year later I saw him play Brahms' d minor concerto, which was not one of my favorite works at the time, but I was absolutely overwhelmed, and it is still by far the best concert I've ever attended. No one plays with more conviction. You really know you are in the presence of greatness witnessing Sokolov play.

No, not a horrible vlog, rather a very lovable vlog. When you're saying so about your own vlog you are contradicting yourself in the way that you are describing that concert as very sincere and that is exactly what I would call this vlog; very sincere.

I heard him live 3 years ago, the concert was unforgettable. I heard a sound, a tone, so clear, so mastered ; and his music was scary in the sense that it was totally unpredictable. Every note was pure gold, at the point where it was difficult to concentrate on an entire phrase. No words ..

Lucky you,,,and your vlog is perfect. Sokolov is “total” magic,,I would love to be at his Recital and I would be unable to describe with words also. Thank you for showing us your experience and I also love your playing. In Australia we may never have the Sokolov Recital experience. His recorded concerts will do for now. 🌺🌺🌺🙏🙏🙏😇😇😇

This *wasn't* a terrible vlog! The very fact that you were so unable to put your experience of this concert into words, itself speaks volumes. As does your obvious admiration for a fellow performer. I hope you realize that, in your life's journey, you will meet some barriers you think are insurmountable, but which, through hard work and dedication, maybe not even realizing at the time what's happening, you will overcome in the end. What you believe to be unattainable now, you may one day find you have achieved. Meanwhile, it's perfectly fine to be in awe. I attended one of Sokolov's concerts a few weeks ago in Stockholm, and the program was the same as in your concert. Sokolov's performance was breathtaking and I especially enjoyed the Schubert impromptus.

Sokolov's playing is magical. I've never had the chance to hear him live, but back in the day of iPod I had a recording of Schubert's G and B flat sonatas (D894 and D960) played by Sokolov, and from the very first note I was spellbound.

I really enjoyed this vlog. I can empathize with your frustration at not finding words to describe your Sokolov experience. You did far better than I ever could. Sometimes after a truly great concert, I just end up crying for a few hours (sometimes days). When a musician connects, the experience is transformative.

My god this was an exceptional vlog - Your emotional descriptions of what you experienced... your chills, the pain of music done wrong, the way this pianist played with his heart, the way the piano sings, the way he changed the colors of the music, how you opened your heart and soul about this concert and performer....... from 2:15 on, my eyes were getting humid.... This is a terrific vlog because you had such a hard time describing how you felt at the concert, and I can relate so much! xD You just had to be there to really know how you felt! Thank you, Tiffany! I loved seeing you trying to describe this concert. It's everything I feel too when listening to music. I would've loved to experience that concert myself! There's only a few pianists in the world that give every note a sense and it's indeed very special. But also, while you explained I realized that everything you said I think about your playing! So now I'm quite glad that you went to this concert, because the way it made you feel is exactly the feeling that I have when I hear you play. Maybe now you really understand how much you inspire me. I know, you are not always satisfied with your playing and that's totally okay and even good, cause you're about to get even better due to that, but just keep in mind that you are going to reach all the goals you set to yourself because you got the talent, inspiration and will to go for it!

I want to cry. Classical music is so emotional and I am looking forward to go to concerts soon. It's a pity I haven't been exposed properly to classical music when I was very young and that then life took me in another direction. But during college I have grown to love classical music that much that I have decided to start playing at 27. Maybe one day I'll be enough experienced to transform my emotions into music

Sokolov's sound quality and control is from another planet. I am really lucky to attend to his concerts once a year, here where I live. It is indeed very difficult to explain why Sokolov is such a genius because there are many reasons and many of them are truly sutil, but you couldn't have explained it better. Really. I once, a couple of months ago, had the opportunity to tell him in person that I grow emotionally with every concert that he gives. As a very sensitive person, there is a dimension to his sound that scapes from what words can express. Somehow, he carries with him an inner peace and a sensitivity that shows in the most clear, musical way possible every time he plays. Thank you for this vlog, Tiffany, and keep striving 💓⭐

He came to Madrid last year. My piano teacher told me I HAD to go (I had never listened him play before) and I didn't regret it...his playing is just beautiful. "He plays with his heart and his ears", that's the exact definition. Hope to hear him play again soon. Hopefully...Ravel's Sonatine, his recording is the one I've listened the most and I love it.

This is one of my favorite vlogs because I love hearing your thoughts about your favorite pianist. Whenever I hear your music, I also want you to continue ad infinitum because I can never get enough of you're beautiful music. Your mention of some music actually causing you physical pain reminds me of the feeling I experience whenever I hear country and western so-called music. I do not intend to insult anyone who enjoys C & W music, I just find listening to it to be quite painful.

Grigory Sokolov is incredible. The first recording i heard was Beethoven's Diabelli Variations. And then the biggest shock was hearing a number of his Chopin Etude performances. If anybody ever needs clarification that those Etudes are monumental then they will absolutely understand when hearing his performance of them

This is beautiful, descriptive and emotive and wonderful to listen to. The feeling and connection with the music and understanding of the artists performance in communicating from his heart to the audience is eloquently described. Even if one can never really define what it is or feels like to experience - unless as you say you are there to hear it. I get the same feeling in listening to Elvis interpret song. It’s about the ability to communicate and transmit the feeling through sound. I wish I was as sophisticated as you in understanding and appreciating the pure essence of the music and performance. Sokolov has always been a really interesting performer. I was in my late teens when I found his Hammerklavier recording. But within the last 20 years his playing has gotten the attention he has long deserved. How he gets those sounds with all that movement I'll never know . He is unforgettable! Like Horowitz and Bolet there 8s noone with his presence and without the neurosis of a Horowitz he is electric!

I have seen / listened to several of his concerts, in Ludwigshafen, Frankfurt... i agree that it is impossible to explain, of course it would be sad if we could. What i found stunning, during one of his very silent encores, was the silence. 1000 People in one room, which would rather kill them self than producing even the most diminutive noise, to absorb any quantum of whatever he was just now producing in that moment.

This is the first video of yours I've stumbled upon, and I'm really only starting to get interested in classical music again (I was classically trained as a kid but lost the spark). I'm one of those people who you could call ignorant, probably. But the way you've described your experience honestly almost brought me to tears, I had no idea that you could see and feel music like that. My jaw started dropping about halfway through the vlog. The most amazing thing to me is that, when you said 'you had to be there,' the only thing I thought was that there is *no way* that I would understand or feel even 2% of what you experienced there. Your sensitivity is just mind-blowing to me. I really think I understand a little bit better now, so thank you! You might not even realize how fascinating this kind of insight is to people like me, it really makes me want to learn more about it now, to really... listen. I'll definitely keep following now!

Agreed, describing the sounds from a concert can be very difficult, but that does not mean it’s not worth trying! I think you did a fine job explaining its technical aspects as well as how it affected you emotionally. Not only are you providing thoughtful and substantive insights into the world of classical music, you are doing it through a personal lens that is unique to yourself. That makes this a great vlog in my book!

Girl, I know exactly how it feels trying to describe a very complex feeling to others. Some people will never understand what u say, no matter how hard you try. But some will understand it anyways, no matter how tousled your explanation is. You have a great way of expressing yourself so indeed, this was a wonderfull vlog. Don’t worry :) I just started the piano 1 year ago, in my early twenties, and I love it! I heard him play Rach 3 at the Albert hall in the late 1990s. I had no idea who he was when it started, but he wasn't far into the first movement before my jaw literally dropped and it stayed like that til the end.

I'm glad you shared this when you did, Tiffany. Though no fault of your own, I am completely sad from watching this due to the fact that we cannot go to the concert hall right now. I have such memories. I miss it so much and can certainly relate to your observations when we are "in the moment" watching artistic excellence onstage literally wash over you. Everything here in San Francisco (including Michael Tilson Thomas' final concert of the Mahler 8th with the San Francisco Symphony and Chorus) has been cancelled. Wishing you all the best and hoping for a better world soon. And my profound thanks for all of your performances on KZfaq, as well as the vlogs. For me, it's as good as it gets in this moment.

I think what you felt was seeing and hearing how music should be played. I have that kind of feeling when I listen old people tell stories or teach. I don't know what they are doing that's right, but it just feels right and you want to be like that.

Any budding musicians out there? This is a must watch vlog for you guys!!! (and anybody else for that matter) Amazing. Thanks Tiffany!! Several wonderful observations. One that I would like to highlight (I keep telling my friend musicians (mostly violinists) this) is that I'd rather go to a concert with mistakes, where the musician(s) take chances, show extreme passion, with points of no return, climbing without harness, matter of life/death, than a concert with "no mistakes" but dull, rehearsed (sounding like an obedient student.) Most of the other subjects raised here are above me, and must likely be experienced listening to good music (that's why we've got music in the first place, not just words I suppose), but Tiffany gets very close in this vlog.

I’ve never heard of him but I had major goosebumps when I heard Lorna McGhee( principal flutist of the Pittsburgh Symphony)play her recital especially when she played the Poulenc Sonata.. Some of my favorite pianists are Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, Volodos, Evgeny Kissin, and Yuja Wang😊❤️🎶🎼

Thank you for that Tiffany, I had never really heard Grigory Sokolov before this.This guy is really good in that he plays his heart much like Vladamir Horowitz used to do. Vladamir Horowitz, whom I still consider to be the greatest prophet of the Romantic Era composers. This only comes from having complete command of his instrument and his moment. Grigory Sokolov, a true master at his craft.
