"...the sea? It's over there, between the land and the sky!" Basil's endearing attitude towards Mrs Richards is something aspire to, when dealing with an extremely fussy customer (so long as you don't make it so obvious!)

What foreign viewers may not understand is that all these characters used to exist in real life, and they are played so beautifully. Now 40 years later only a few people are like this and we have different society.

I used to work in a v posh restaurant in London in the early 80's as a commis waitress. We had to do silver service, not always easy to get right! We had customers from all over the world, many v easy to serve. But some of the Brits could be really awkward - one bloke would insist on having tomato ketchup, even with a posh meal, and made quite a big deal of it! (One of our favourite customers!!) After dealing with the likes of this I'd make a hasty retreat to the kitchen, have a crafty cigarette, and watch the Head Chef mess around with some of his prepared delicacies, when in a mean mood! The Head Waiters wore posh gear, and strutted around as if they were 'gods', while we laughed at them, and the (meat & poultry) 'Carvers' would hang around the customers ' tables after serving whatever - it- was, like vultures, waiting for a tip! Yes, these were the days of real characters in real life. If only someone would write a Sit Com about the likes of these...! Basil would be great as the Restaurant Manager! Sibyl as the Cashier, and Polly as a waitress of course! (Maybe she could play my part - the cheeky 18 year old from 'The North' in her first job!!!)

They made just the two series of six episodes. The first shot and aired in 75.The second series was 4 years later and Cleese and Booth had divorced by then. The first series was on bbc2 while they reshowed both in 79 on bbc1 at prime time instead. The few shots externally of the hotel was not a hotel and has long since gone.No outside scene was ever shot in Torquay. The reason Torquay was chosen is because some of the Pyton team including Cleese and Booth were staying at a real hotel in Torquay called The Gleneagles and the guy that ran it inspired Cleese and Booth to make what became Fawlty Towers. In the Builders episode the Gleneagles gets an honoury mention.
