In this annoyingly comprehensive lengthy Brake pad & Rotor replacement, I walk you through a complete brake job on one side (the driver's side) of this 2008 Toyota Tundra.
Brake pads that I used: amzn.to/3aM4LFZ
Special tools that I used:
Extra long box end wrench set: amzn.to/2KEnXe0
Vacuum brake fluid bleeder: amzn.to/3f2Tc0b
Funky crow's foot torque wrench: amzn.to/2y7DLmW
Inch Pound Torque Wrench: amzn.to/2yTqb6w
*I know that I used more than these for tools, but I had a feeling these are what folks would be most ask-y about. :)
Equipment I use for filming:
Phone: amzn.to/3xUkvFd
Camera: amzn.to/3EAuhyp
Tripod: amzn.to/3EBYtJr
Drone: amzn.to/38DgR8P

I chuck my Tacoma brake pad pins in my electric drill and use either cleaner and scotch brite or fine sand paper to get them nice and shiny. Then lube them as well. I enjoy knowing thought that I’m not the only OC mech. I work on commercial aircraft (28 years) and tell people all the time that you want your mechs to be OC. Thanks for all your videos. I do all my own vehicle maintenance and even though I’ve done most of the things I see you do on your channel I still learn things every time. @14:44 PRO TIP: For those of us in the NorthEast that find the rotors seized to the hub flange, there's two threaded bolt holes (Faye runs her finger right past one of them). Check the new rotor for the same threaded hole to match up the proper metric bolt. You can run an 8mm metric bolt into the threaded hole to press the rotor from the hub flange (bolt can be found under the hood holding down the airbox and other items, or just source the correct bolt from a hardware store). Just wanted to add this tip for anyone in the NE or the salt belt because you can spend all day pounding on the rotor and still have zero luck. Also an air hammer around the areas Faye pointed out works wonders as well. Great content, im subbing right now 🤘🏼😁🤘🏼

Rust is so evil, I had to get rid of my 2007 Tundra regular cab short bed 4x4, only 80k miles, because frame rot took over. Mechanically it was perfect but East Coast rust is the worst.

@@FayeHadley Also on some cars where the rotors are siezed on and there's no provision for pulling/pushing via a bolt hole, see if there is some metal surface like on the hub carrier you can use, put a bolt and nut between the back of rotor and hub carrier then use your bolt/nut as a pusher tool

Thanks for the video Faye! Great reference video. I tend to clean and lube any rubber boots, since they don't get much love and dirty boots turn into torn boots. A soapy rag on the caliper piston boots and silicone paste keeps everybody healthy. Same for the slide pins, that grease gets lots of heat... stuck calipers is less fun than ongoing maintenance.

Just a thought to add, But before you pull the vehicle off the ramp after your done.....pump the brakes up till they're hard. I've watched a few colleagues in the past forget this and prang customers cars backing out the shop. Those pistons in the calipers are still a little way back from the pad and it'll take a couple pumps to get them snugged up to the pad, last thing you want is to brake and have the pedal go to the floor! keep up the good work Faye!

Im a apprentice technician mechanic for Volkswagen, im based in Aus,Melbourne. Im a 2nd year, mid 20s, and already know working with brakes. Of course in the everyday workshop we don't go to the extreme that you have - great work though. We do lubricate the sliders on some brake setups, and the rear drums I've been told to apply some copper grease behind the brake shoes/pads in the drum. Just figured you wanted to know you've making a difference, so heres my comment and share of experience. Great to see someone elses work and compare it. Absolutely love when you do videos with Danny and when we straightened your block and files down your tappers (I think thats what they were called) I was glued to the screen. engine building is what im eager to see and learn, everyday service work is a bit too casual. Anyway, in short, thanks for a great video and your service with many smiles! Just hopes everythings wokring out for you and your success.

I’ve watched all your brake videos today. Did my brakes today with a front lower control on driver side. Everything was going fine until the bad thoughts kicked in and than my stud on my lower control broke lose so the nut just spun with the stud. Had to pull out the grinder and cut it off. Than Subaru and Toyota didn’t have the flange nut in stock that I needed for my scion. Lucky me I’m paranoid so I don’t through away good nuts and bolts. Found the exact one I needed. Put the new control arm in. Then when I put on my rotors they were so wobbly they looked warped and I just had them resurfaced. I put in two nuts on to hold it in play and they didn’t work. It wasn’t until I put on all my nuts on the wheel rotor that it held in place. Putting the brakes on was the easy part. Then when I reassembled everything the wheel would get stuckish. Turns out you really have to pay attention to them slider bolts took it apart and cleaned and lubed the slider bolt and that fixed the problem. I still have to do the rear wheels but that was almost an entire day. Omg. Just kept listening to your videos and tried to mimic and learn your style. Thanks for the videos !

Great vid and overview of doing a break job I may have to do front pads on 2001 Nissan maxima “MadMax”My son’s first car. It use to be mine it got passed down to him after I got a pickup. Needless to say “MadMax”fell apart not long after he got it. It’s been fun doing the repairs myself. To save him $$. When I was younger I thought of going into automotive mechanic line of work. I ended up with CS degree. I still missed working with my hands and fixing things. And have an appreciation for auto-tech’s . I estimate in past 12 months I have saved my son almost $1700 in labor and parts costs (using mostly aftermarket parts) I am trying to spur an interest in him in developing skills and mechanical skills that will help him in life. This is something missing in today’s youth.

Great information in this video. The tip about marking the torqued bolts is a great idea. I used to work on the iRobot Powered wheelchair. That wheelchair is a class 3 medical device that can actually climb and descend stairs, so strict adherence to the torque specs is critical to prevent failure and user injury. One time I did actually lose sleep because I could not remember whether or not I had torqued the main bolts that fasten the seat arms to the power base. Fortunately the customer is an engineer, gear head and has good mobility and torque wrenches, so early the next day I called him and asked him to verify that they were torqued. They were, thankfully, but putting a discreet mark on them and checking before I left would have saved me some sleep.

I have done new front and rear suspensions, upper control arms, tie rod ends, sway bars, air bags and so on for our Tundra, setup a limited slip differential (old gm car), however, brakes have always given me anxiety! Will be doing my 2019 Tundra soon (we have put way too many miles on it) thank you so very much.

First off: great video. I like how you role. I didn't read all the comments, so maybe this has been addressed earlier, but red loctite is for things you assemble and expect to never disassemble again. If disassembly is required, expect to apply heat to break down the loctite. For this application you should be using BLUE loctite.

I open the caliper bleeder then push back the pistons having the fluid into the bleed instead of back into the line. Then the full bleed. Then I take the caliper off to preform the brake pad / rotor replacement. The brake bleed cap should be replaced if the old one is cracked / missing. Love your very through videos! (and the chickens)

These are awesome videos, Faye! I had to learn how to wrench on my 2002 Mitsu by using the shop manual (first car that I did major work on and it was v confusing). There are videos about Audi maint but they're usually from shadetree mechanics and I can tell corners are being cut. How I wish those pads just slid out of the calipers like these do. These videos are so well done that I'm 100% ready to do my pad/rotor swap and I'm 90% sure I won't mess up my transmission fluid change haha. Thanks!

FABULOUS vid , know you need to do a vid on how to diagnose problems if something goes wrong, for example, I just changed everything, and I mean everything in the brake system, well I tour through pads, rotors only on one side unless then 6 months, problem booster I replaced was one size fits most, only one available for vehicle, the rod length for it slightly too long and always apply part brake. Took us 4 days to figure out because we skipped steps to diagnose for we replaced everything.

Hey Faye, even though I know about 90% of that you can always learn something so absolutely you’re helping countless people and due to the in mortality of KZfaq you’ll continue to help people for a long long time. Back right around the time when you were born you may not know this but maybe you do you couldn’t go to the Big chain parts store and get parts for your Toyota they had foreign automotive stores that’s where you went for Volkswagen Toyota etc. so I went to the Toyota dealer which was always almost considerably cheaper probably 99% of the time and if the dealer wasn’t cheaper it was usually so close in price you just went to the dealer knowing the parts were sure to be better in quality and being Toyota you really didn’t go there for repairs mostly maintenance stuff so due to that I always use factory Toyota stuff regardless of price unless it’s just insane which I really haven’t run across that to speak of. keep the videos coming keep busy stay safe🐔🐔🐔👍

I have only been subscribed for a couple of weeks and I would totally use your channel for DIY. I like automotive mechanics and you are a lot of fun to watch and, you're funny, and I like that you show the chickens because I find chickens hilarious. More than the average person. I grew up with chickens and my dad had a few of the kind that you have. I remember laughing at how they looked running around.
