FB Live: Emergency showed that we are a country of cowards, says Madhu Trehan

On the 42nd anniversary of the imposition of the infamous Emergency, Newslaundry brought together a panel of veterans, who were on the frontlines, for a Facebook Live to speak of their experience of the dark days of Indian democracy.
The panel included veteran columnist Tavleen Singh, a reporter during the Emergency, veteran journalist Virendra Kapoor, who was jailed after the then-PM Indira Gandhi announced a media clampdown, Ram Bahadur Rai, veteran journalist and former news editor of Jansatta, and Rajinder Sachar, the retired Chief Justice of Delhi High Court.
The panel discussed Sanjay Gandhi’s role behind the Emergency, the failure of citizens and media organisations as well as the threats the country faces now. The panel also discussed the possibility of another Emergency.

"Reaching out to the people over the heads of the media" is also another way of avoiding accountability and questions. Twitter can be easily reduced to a one-way channel of "communication".

14 : 08 Siddhartha Shankar Ray was the CM of West Bengal at that time. He formed the last Congress Government in West Bengal after winning the elctions in 1972

If this interview happens today with the same people I don't think those who are supporting the current government on press freedom can say the same thing today. And how could a blunder of previous governments give a free pass to the current government to ban or detain the media person if they are criticising those who are in power?

Story is one sided. People forget the heroic efforts of A D Gorealla & Durga Bhagwat who were beyond party politics. They never stood in a queue to pension and awards.

This all is just the surface talked. Without the great well organised underground struggle story at that time outside the jails, a part of which I'm a witness of, 90% of the successful 'सिंहासन खाली करो' adventure story is still underground.

Madhu keeps mentioning this government department that runs analytics on media, as a government arm, that meddles with free speech. I was wondering if it occurred to you that the government might be running analytics to get a public feedback on its actions / policies of the day. Is it possible that it scores journalists and their reports as positive, negative or neutral to understand how a particular policy or action is being perceived in the public and possibly to filter out opinions from journalists with biases or agenda. Understanding the public mood is paramount for any democratic leader and the analytics department, from a non-cynical perspective, could be Mr. Modi's way of listening to unbiased feedback, especially since he himself doesn't interact with the media on a regular basis.

The situation today is completely different compared to 1970s. Today unofficial emergency is in place already, only a shell of the opposition has been kept alive. AAP ministers have been raided repeatedly by the CBI without any outcome. The NDTV case is a matter of private business of ICICI bank and NDTV amounting to a few dozen crore rupees, settled many years back. Yes, selective raid on NDTV for a private matter means unofficial emergency when the CBI is doing nothing about Power Tariff Scam reported by DRI, Vyapam, Panama Papers, Modigate, DDCA and all the UPA era scams.The worst part is that this unofficial emergency is duly supported by unquestioning bhakts. The oppression of the opposition is nationalistic according to them. No, the situation is not completely different, it is the same.

What kind of creeps this Madhu Trehan etc are? They cry about scientific analysis of Journalist by Government, even as they agree that there is no evidence of positive journos are rewarded or negative journos are punished. And this creep pontificates knowing how the likes of Barkha D Sardesai R etc are given such ugly rewards. So shameless are these journos. These type of creeps have just to be eradicated to purge India of this journalistic poison.
