My friend attended this festival the year of this performance. To the best of my recollection, he said that Burton Bell had the flu here. If so, major kudos to him for pulling off this performance as well as he did!

damn! Bell could nail those clean vocals, contrary to the naysayers, this is sounds pretty good. That high G-4 was a little flat but he managed to push it a notch with his grit.

@@robroy5573 Alas, indeed he was. Should've moved to proper techs by the end of 90s, could've sounded better while saving the voice. And the band really should've changed their aproach to live sets to make the best out of Burton's decreasing capabilities.

I hate that Burt so often relied on auto tune. He is better than that. But I guess you can only ask so much from a singer. Here he isn’t using auto tune. But there are countless videos on KZfaq where he has. But vocalists have to pace themselves so we can’t blame him. But I wish he would have remained organic more often. And laid off the tech. But I guess I get why. He is giving a little more than say Bryan Ferry.
@RIDDICK0911
@RIDDICK0911 Жыл бұрын
The issue here is that most studio works are 100% auto tuned and mixed to fucking death. A lot of singers literally cannot sing the way you hear it on studio albums. And even if they can, most of them are unable to do it live for the whole set. In the end, it's about trying to sound like studio vs being honest and adaptive. I wouldn't put the blame on Burton alone because other band members should've adapted as well, convince him to get proper training, or just find another vocalist altogether.

This is an EPIC song but this performance pretty well much sums up why the Beatles stopped touring. When it becomes impossible to get to the same record sound (that is supplemented with many over dubs and effects) . As I said, this is a brilliant song but here, they cant get anywhere close to the recorded version in this live situation, I mean its "ok" but its really lacking in the quality of the vocals and sonically overall.

@wonsworld You are correct. I do not think Burton had enough training with his vocal technique in order to perform this song as good as on the records. Just take a look at the band Jinjer... the singer there is AMAZIING live compared to Burton. There are several live videos where it sounds exactly the same as the studio recording.

Um. That's why albums are recorded in a studio environment and live is ment to not sound like the studio version hence live sound

I've always been big FF fan but have to admit they've always been terrible at live performances. Burton simple unable to sing live, and the whole sound of them could not be further from studio records. No wonder why they could not make that desired mainstream breakthrough. This song anyway just fuckin brilliant.

it didn't help that Dino was a fatso and his mates were average looking joes, it was all up to Bell to be the image of the band, on top of fronting and maintaining an unsustainable signature vocal style.

Peter Horvath Always been terrible at live performances? Dude, so not true. There are performances when they all sound great (and not terrible at all)...and Burton's style of singing (combination of growl/clean vocals) is very difficult to perform...sure, he had/has his bad days too (like every vocalist I guess).

Perhaps you arnt old enough to remember, but Watch him nail sbr here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jaiFhM6imNbTk2w.html then tell me his voice was always blown. What's wierd is in 2001 somthing happened to his vocals, then In 2004 he was back on top form see the big day out show. Then by 2006 at wacken his voice was complely blew again, after that it doesn't seem to have ever fully recovered. Maybe pushed it too hard the second time round...
