Landing at Darwin International Airport after flying through Australia's outback. Talking fear in the cockpit - what if you're scared of flying or have a fear of flying. Visiting Wrigley & Murphy's landing site at the Ross Smith Landing Site in Darwin, plus watch the take-off from Tennant Creek Outback Airport. A fear of flying is natural, and even pilots get scared sometimes. But knowing how to conquer your fear of flying means realising fear is you expecting to be scared. Why do some people have a fear of flying? I discuss how I approach it and why there is nothing to fear but fear itself.
Today's flight departs Tennant Creek Airport for Darwin International Airport on day 4 of my Wrigley & Murphy recreation flight to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Great Air Race of 1919.

Loved the description of fear, as a glider pilot, you’re constantly anxious to find the next thermal, and whenever I get out of gliding distance from two airports I get extremely nervous, but learned a) as long as you have a plan B for an outlanding, everything is going to be fine and b) Angst doesn’t help. At least in most of the cases. P.S. love the “airtrip”👍🏼

4:28 - Really great overview of fear - my acronym is "False evidence appearing real", but all other acronyms work equally well. It's useful to inform the 12% of our mind, using logic/reason, that "fear doesn't exist." That may temper the rest of the 88% of our mind (the subconscious) that is butting in. What's interesting is that 88% of the mind, as it relates to fear, is a defense mechanism that is protecting your body and your emotions. This is the world of known negative associations from the past, and potentially not about the truth. Stefan: All of your planning, plan B's, talking thru things, monitoring systems, talking to milkshake, flight and training/recurrency experience, are countering the inner-talk. When you can recognize that the 88% is just there to help out, you can let it go, and continue flying. The 88% will then relax and chill out, because of your confident decision to be "Pilot in Command". One piece of trivia. When we're born we have two in-built fears - fear of falling and fear of loud noises. As that relates to aviation - great! For me, while flying around New York and Los Angeles Airspace, the magic answer was verbalizing the checklist steps out loud. The running flow of "structured anticipatory action; with my control inputs; with expected measurable response" is what calms the subconscious mind - it's all about control. I really enjoy your videos, and have fun looking up GoogleMaps to see where you are!

I loved the comment died at 25 and buried at 75 (or whatever) I heard one the other day something along the lines of, what happened yesterday is history and called the past, what happens tomorrow is yet to come and is the future but make the most of what happens today as it is special gift to us and that is why it is called the present. I have been following Mike's Instagram and listening to his Southern Sun book and great to hear you talking about meeting up. Did you read the additional comment I added about watching again with my dad on his new smart Tv and the brilliant detail coming through, especially on that back camera? Looking forward to the next one Stef.

G'day from Thailand. Enjoy your videos...spent many hundreds of hours 30+yrs ago flying outback Oz...no GPS, no, or very few navaids (NDB'S), no autopilot, WAC chart and E6B prayer wheel for navigation. Comms on HF....but at least we had comms.....now you're "lost" without some ATC center talking to you. Keep them coming...love seeing the outback from 8000ft again.

Hey Stef. I have loved planes and flying on them since I was a little boy. The sound, sight and smell of jet fuel would give me butterflies from excitement and still does to this day except, from about twenty something I developed this irrational anxiety when flying and have not been on a plane for over 15 years. Thanks to guys like you I don't miss out completely on keeping up with aviation in general. When you said "don't die at 25 and be buried at 75", damn, what a wake up that gave me...I have allowed this fear to waste years. Time to do something about it. Your awesome.

Hey mate, this comment is why I make videos like this. That’s so great to hear. Just remember, and keep telling yourself, you’re not alone feeling like that. I hope you get to fly again, and wish you all the very best mate. Cheers, stef

Your downwind take-off on 11 to capture your shadow in the climb out and the left turn giving us a view of Tennant Creek township showcased your cinematic thinking as most pilots would have taken an intersection departure off 07 with a quick left turn to join track, missing the visual opportunity for the great view. Well done!

Your "tribute trip" is inspiring, spetially to remind aviation history. Your present series reminds me some other I saw a few months ago from a Mexican/american CFI based in south Texas (US) named Eddie from Eddie Aviation Services. He flew from Texas to North Carolina in a ferry flight and uploaded some footages from Cape Hatteras were the Wright Brothers made their first flight 115 years ago. I humbelly suggest to visit his channel and watch those videos. I wish you and your family Merry Christmas and a happy 2020 and also so much soft landings as takeoffs. One question though ¿ what happend to your 4 blade proppeller you changed erlier? Once identification was terminated I went through a fairly big area of no VHF coverage. So the radio was quiet for a period of time. I would have been able to contact any local CTAF frequencies, but there weren't any airfields all that close, so yeah I was pretty much alone from a radio perspective. So yeah, nice when you hear the radio coming back in and know you're getting close to your destination. Cheers Aidan.

It's an empty space, I usually put the CAPS lock pin in there, and sometimes sunglasses / iPhone etc.
