Adult elephants have excellent control of their prehensile trunks, so this one was quite capable of simply taking the food from the hand of the woman offering it. Yet it chose instead to twist the end of its trunk and present the flattened underside, allowing the woman to place the food there. Given the intelligent of elephants I am left wondering if it perhaps picked up on not just the woman's intent, but her hesitancy, her nervousness, and so chose to accept the food in a manner designed to be non-threatening

There are a few wild elephants on this Sri Lankan road that behave this way. They are generally NOT a threat. Unfortunately, people have spoiled them by offering food. As a result of that, they associate food with vehicles and are now DEMANDING it from every passing vehicle. Every vehicle needs a bunch of bananas or sugarcane for safe and hassle-free passage! Consider it as a "protection" toll :))

Couldnt of said that better myself , going from the asian jungle where i was close enough to touch an elephant & indeed had one come and take sugar cane from my hand . To seeing one in a zoo in oz in a comparatively tiny pen chained and rocking was sad . The thais told us when an elephant rocks side to side its stressed , depressed or loosing its mind and thats when theyre dangerous . The poor animal in the zoo was doing exactly that . The ones in the jungle were very happy (the wwf agreed with an award ) . African elephants by all accounts have a totally different temperament

That is an old wives tale. They most certainly will attack, BECAUSE THEY ARE WILD. And as such, humans, on foot or in vehicles, should not be feeding them. Just like every other form of wildlife on the planet, they will equate humans to food and begin to act badly. They they are the ones who will pay the price. Remember . . . Elephants are wise and intelligent, they recognize intentions. But people mistakenly believe and think that they are beasts driven by the lust to kill. Anyway, what people don't come up with. They also created myths about gorillas. People, especially civilized people, do not feel nature, do not interact with it, do not correlate, so they have such an opinion. Their unjustified fear, misunderstanding transforms into panic hostility, exaggeration, exaggeration, reluctance and extreme distance. You have to understand nature. The biggest threat is t mothers with calves and young males with testosterone stimulated to aggression. Plus elephants kept in captivity. But people have it that if they don't understand something, they're scared, they're terrified. Just like with spiders. People have much fobies.

The rossevelt elk do this manuever too. They will slowly bring the whole of 101 to a stop one lane at a time, then stand there waiting for the babies to gain their courage and come across. One day while this was happening, I watched a Hoopa woman come out of her rattled old truck and threaten to slap the holy crap out of some city boy hells angel wannabe who was revving his stoopid momo thinking that was going to make it better. I was right behind the bikers. He had more sense than I gave him credit for, and stopped it before she pushed him off that bike. Idk if he realized that before he could have gotten up, the whole rest of the line would have jumped onto him. The elk don't push into the vehicles. They just edge out until a vehicle stops in the first lane, one elk stays in front of that vehicle and another one edges into the next lane, until they get compliance from the humans.

They are not protecting their families while making the cross. These elephant were frequently fed by the road users. If you watched enough videos of these elephants, you realised how they developed from begging to robbing. They are no longer afraid of the vehicle, they attack the buses and vans, for food. Seems like they even learnt to set up road blocks to rob the road users. These are all habitual, eventually someone will die and the elephant will be killed. Never feed wild animal.

Me too, the Bronx Zoo! I was visiting from New England, circa 1962. I distinctly remember being held up to the fence by a relative. The elephant gave me a wet kiss on my face which freaked me out. Decades alter, I would regularly ride an Asian elephant in the opening parade of a circus. I was a performer on the show, 1982-90. Elephants do not belong in circus, I eventually decided. I believe wild animals deserve to live in the wild. I respect elephants enough to know to not approach them, such as this woman did. I have seen elephants go crazy in circus, nothing you want to be be near. When in their territory, one must realize they are trespassing on wild territory, so anything wild could happen.

@Kilo Bacon n Eggs Oh, really? I thought it meant living at the edge of something. No, Captain Obvious, I'm talking about using the word "edge" in a grammatically correct way. Some correct ways: The elephant has the edge in terms of size / when it comes to size. In size, the elephant has the edge. Elephants have an edge over humans when we consider size. But, writing such as: "You don't have the intelligence edge." is incorrect. Too much bacon & eggs, perhaps?

@Kilo Bacon n Eggs It isn't, in terms of semantics. I'm not sure you understand the idea of a competitive edge. Taking offence quickly doesn't put one in an advantageous position, therefore the idea of an edge cannot be applied in that context. For instance, in terms of semantics, it's incorrect to say that older humans generally maintain the edge over younger ones in terms of poor health. @@TheRDMagee Elephants are mostly harmless when tame. The only time I've heard of a captured elephant, that's domesticated, killing a human is if the person mistreats it and if it's in "musth" which means they are extra horny, and, often, the human gets killed because he's inbetween two bull males that are in musth, and the human is not the target of their aggression but just gets caught inbetween them, trying to fight each other. There's also a shocking short story by George Orwell, based on a true story when he was a policeman in I think Burma, where he was asked to put down an elephant in musth that had killed or injured a human, and he had to do it with a pistol, which is needlessly cruel, and he didn't even want to but was expected to since he was the White man in charge of "law and order". Very well written short story that has many layers of meaning. Bye.
