3:26 I love how you can see Brandon's shaky hands in this. The protagonist isn't some ultra instinct overpowered fearless guy, but just a dude who is afraid like the rest of us and tries to overcome the horror in front of his eyes. Now THIS is a hero.

I love his totally believable reaction to a supernatural horror that doesn't work like any other enemy he's fought. Rick is a mercenary and a soldier, he's been in battles and killed people, but his opponents were always humans that would be hurt or killed by gunfire or other weapons. They felt pain and hunger and thirst and had recognisably human needs. Imhotep is a horrific monster from a bygone age that cannot be killed by even the most powerful firearms. Rick isn't completely inexperienced, so he doesn't freeze up like many people realistically probably would, but he's still terrified of a foe that is so obviously beyond his ability to deal with.

in Egyptian mythology cats are the guardians of the afterlife. So, it would make sense he's afraid since it would most likely drag him back in his perspective. Also, Egyptians hold cats to a high regard that he knew if he stayed there, there's a huge chance the cat will be hit by a stray bullet.

The effects hold up sooo well 20+ years later because of the mixture between practical effects and CGI. Seriously, Imhotep turning into sand still looks amazing!!!

Misty Lover it’s a long long story, but you have to read it yourself (about Egyptian mythology) About Bastet, she was goddess of home, women, fertility and childbirth. She protected home from evil spirits @wiki So maybe Imhotep is counted as one

When you realise that Imhotep originally didn't want to do anything really that evil besides from sleeping with his lover and then ends up mummified as a great evil and cursed to be the evil monster he originally didn't even want to be. He is similar to Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean. He is only antagonist for loving more than he should. A tragic character.

Imhotep possibly shut the doors because he didn't want to get chased by the cat. In Egyptian times, cats were guardians of the underworld. Mummies that are brought back from the dead are terrified of cats until their full regeneration into human form.

When this movie came out I was a teenager and I thought Brendan Fraser was the most beautiful man I had ever seen in my life and Rache Weisz was a real princess. I even had a crush on Oded Fehr in the second part. Every cast member was so exquisitely beautiful, even the evil ones. The amazing chemistry, not only between the two lead casts but also between Brendon Fraser and John Hannath, the adventure, the amazing cinematography, the music, and of course the storyline...everything was epic. I would never get tired of these two movies.

To appreciate John Hannah more, check out my all time favorite TV show Spartacus. He plays an EXTREMELY foul mouthed villain, completely different character from in the Mummy movies, really lets him show off his range as an actor. Bonus: everyone is beautiful in that, too.

@@jeremyfrost2636 Yes, I am fortunate enough to watch that masterpiece. You are right. John Hannah is incredibly versatile. It's my personal opinion but compared to the adventure or fantasy movies that used to be made in the 90s or even the first decade of this century, the action movies nowadays seem a bit lacklustre. Even with all of their flaws, the plot holes, the impossible stunts, movies like The Fifth Element, or Mummy series, or the original Jurassic Park, Equilibrium, Ultraviolet or the original Matrix or the action movies of Stallone, Van Damme or Arnold Schwarzenegger - they had a soul that today's big budget action movies lack. Or maybe it's my nostalgia speaking! ☺

This movie was so much better than the 2017 version. Like the 2017 version was good too, but it's mostly jump scares. Not to sound sexist, but a female Mummy doesn't give the same sense of formidable horror as the brute primal presence of Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep.

I like the Mummy Returns for its fun action scenes and fantastic soundtrack. The people behind it obviously tried hard to break new grounds with the scenery of Ahm Shere, the water Imhotep, the Rock's Scorpion King...Points for effort, but they tried to add too much instead of focusing on the creatures. In that aspect, the first movie had it done way better.

I agree. It's funny, but the first one used a lot more practical effects vs CGI because it was made on a much cheaper budget. The movie did so well that the studio gave them a larger budget for the second movie, and ... well they didn't keep that same creativity, they just threw CGI at it. Never a good idea, but points for trying new things I guess.

Honestly Winston is pretty much my favorite character in this movie. He’s racked with survivors guilt, but he eventually gets to go out in a blaze of glory like his comrades. and he literally cackles at death.

Not true. The director's previous movie, Deep Rising, was also a well paced action/horror hybrid with great comedy bits. I'd also recommend The Cabin In The Woods, Aliens, Alien Resurrection, The Predator... I could go on.
