Feature of the Day: Atlantic Crossing Edition: Starlink on a boat!

Back by popular request (one person, Marina), Vision 444 Feature of the Day! These will all be on our home, Mira. Most of these will be customizations we’ve done, but if it’s not obvious post a question.
Today we show you our Starlink high performance flat mount kit. As I post this, we are seeing downloads at 133MB/s and uploads at 10.5MB/s… at S 27deg 45min, E 10deg 22min, 255 miles off the coast of Namibia!!!
I almost forgot to mention, the Starlink antenna seems to draw between 75-175watts, though right around 100w seems typical.

Great stuff! Inhave mixed feelings about high speed connectivity at sea ... it's amazing and yet it taints the sense of true introspection that only an ocean passage can bring. There are very few videos of 444s under sail - would love to learn more about how she sails.

Well done! Looking forward to the Feature of the day series. On the Starlink, router and Predic wind hub, did you buy them in US or SA? 110V 0r 220V

All were purchased in US. These three items I would strongly suggest bringing with you. The Starlink is universal voltage and the router runs off of 12V, as does the ethernet switch, which is impossible to find in SA, so bring that too. We have a Netgear GS-108 and I can highly, highly recommend it. PredictWind Hub is also 12V. I think we will end up using the PredictWind Hub for tracking more than anything, especially when we downgrade or pause our Iridium sxervice when not doing a crossing. Hi to Diane!

Mike, this is amazing and it's what we are hoping to use when we do our crossing, probably early next year (hull 17). You mentioned "RV" when talking about the antenna, which Strarlink service plan are you using?

We are using the RV service. The “at sea” service is well out of our price range, and honestly I think it is targeted to merchant ships, mega-yachts etc. Unfortunately, Starlink could always change what is offered, to whom and at what cost, so it is a bit of a gamble especially with this antenna version which is $2500.

@@OnANewTack We are using the RV service right now for our RV, it's been great. I just got an email from Starlink this morning notifying us that the rate is going up to $150 per month, in April. Still a bargain.

@@Underdog126 guess what email we just got!? Yeah well. I think we will be able to downgrade our Iridium plan if this is reliable (except or major crossings) so it may be a bit of a wash for us. If you need internet, hands down a great value.

Thanks Adam. The tan part I get; I tan very easily. The part about being relaxed I’m honestly surprised how many people have noticed or said something. We are relaxed, I guess just surprises how much it’s noticeable. Maybe it’s because we were so work-drive before and that the change is more noticeable?

Hi Mike! Like how you have this on the dodger, and thought it might be a good location for us, but with the stack pack being so wide, and being so close, this seems like it would cover the dish too much. Have you had outage when the boom covers the dish?

Hi Don! I’m not sure. The coverage here is not 100% nor fast by Starlink standards. I’ll have to report back. No matter where I put it, it has the potential to be blocked by something. The spot was too perfect in so many ways that I’m okay with occasional outages. Also, as more satellites go up, it will be less of an issue.

Hi Mike, just returned the $600 version as we had waves over the bimini on the passage that would have taken it out. Ordered the $2500 version as this has a lower profile. Still trying to determine where to place it though. Will the sails get in the way, or just the metal of the boom? Hope you are enjoying St Helena...my favorite on the whole passage :-)

Great video. One question that I have is about shading. Do you have any problems with your boom? I have a ketch rig which could lead to shading. Thanks.

The boom does shade it a little bit. Usually just one panel gets a shadow, so that panel drops down to about 25% of the others. When we were on a dock, we would adjust the boom location throughout the day, but normally we’ll be on anchor or a mooring, so no point!

@@OnANewTack Sorry if I wasn't clear. I meant the Starlink antenna shading. Solar Panels do have shading issues. Does your signal degrade or do you notice. Just curious. Thanks for a response back.

@@johnchilds4156 Hi John, sorry, wasn’t paying attention to the video you commented on!! Shading from the rig didn’t seem to be a problem, at least we couldn’t identify a correlation. We had small periods of outages, but could have been lack of uplink or other issues, but it was never out enough to be more than a very mild annoyance. I think we had one 4 hour or 8 hour period that had no coverage, but we think we were just were there were zero uplinks nearby.

Need to help with the configuration: What do you have connected to the Netgear switch? Do you have a WiFi extender to connect to marinas WiFi networks? What WAN inout are coming into the WaveWiFi, Starlink, PredictWind(Irridium), others? Thx

We really need to. You’d think we would have had plenty of down time while there, but there was always something to do for fun, or relating to the boat. We have a good amount of footage, so we can, and we have 9 hours a day for the next 35 days to work on it. :-)

Apologies, but hybrid what? If our Boat, Vision does not have a hybrid option at the moment. I think James is waiting to see where the technology settles out. It may make it on to his next model offering next...

@@gordonknight That would have been the ideal time, but 30 minutes either side of high tide is *usually* fine. We were waiting for a few last friends from Knysna to make it down for us to say good bye.

After an eventful start like that, it must make the rest of the trip seem quite tame! I guess that you had been through The Heads a few times while in Knysna?
