100% with you on the solo female travel scariness thing. I do not sleep if I am not with my partner and/ children so now when I travel alone, I take an eye mask as well as a door stopper wedge and to satisfy my complete paranoia about the murderer, I take a door alarm....lol. And, to top it off, I carry sleeping tablets, which I don't take because I want to be on my mettle but carry them in case. Those few things totally changed my travelling life.

Good job the eye mask muffles the sound too so you can’t hear the hotel robber who now knows your light is only a deterrent. And you can sleep soundly not knowing you’ve been robbed until you awake to find your boots are gone 🙈🤣

Hello Ruth, not sure if you remember me now but this is Di in Australia, one of your OG’s as you called me. Life has been very horrible after breaking my spine in a terrible car accident. But I’m trying to take each day as it comes. I’ve been off social media for about 2ish years, but I received your email today (there are over 5000 unread) and I just jumped in and so enjoyed your familiar face and voice. I would love a book club of sorts and do hope you make it happen for us. I do hope that you and your beautiful family are all well and happy, much love, Di ❤

I'd be up for a book club! I've done a few on Instagram and this was how it worked: 1. The organiser announced the chosen book and time frame (usually 1 month away) 2. The organiser created a group chat and invited those who wanted to attend. When the group chat was open, the organiser posted a schedule which included which pages to read on which days and times for discussions. 3. We read one book over a 1 week period and had two meetings where we texted in the group chat. One meeting was halfway through the book and the other was at the end.

Have you read any of Tessa Hadley's short stories? If you love Claire Keegan you'll probably really enjoy Hadley as well! Her first collection, Accidents in the Home, is interlinked, so it has recurring characters throughout the stories and makes it feel a bit like a novel that moves between perspectives.

I have been part of a few online book clubs.. some ideas 1. Live on youtube. Set day and time to discuss the book. We interact in comments. 2. In person over zoom. I have done this a few times. Usually better in small groups.. maybe a patron idea? Love your channel ❤ and hearing anyone talk about books is my favorite

"Spring won't be here for ages" LOL! I just love you! It is freakishly warm here in Chicago...20 degrees! We have had a few rounds of this already in February, mixed with thunderstorms, frigid temps and the occasional snow. The weather is out of whack!

The sleep mask is a great idea. Also keep lights on when I’m on my own and typically don’t sleep.

100% agree on Claire Keegan. How Late in the Day is the most incredible 47? pages. Love the idea of a book club. I'm lucky in that other half also loves Keegan so we can talk about her.

Hearing you talk about Claire Keegan reminds me of how I feel about Julia Armfield! I wonder if you'd like her as well - her collection of short stories is called Salt Slow, and I was absolutely transfixed. Obsessed with her writing, and the stories are haunting and weird and amazing. I can't wait to read Antarctica now!

Currently -1 with the wind chill where I am in the States, so you crank that heat up and don't think yourself profligate! An interesting variety of favorites, maybe someone makes a vegan-friendly version of that sleep mask because it's a great design, even for those of us who like total darkness when sleeping ; ) Thanks for posting!

I love Claire Keegan. If you like her, I think that you’ll also like Tana French and Liz Nugent’s books (especially her earlier ones). Oh also, Kala by Colin Walsh. It has this same harrowing quality and is a very atmospheric coming of age story.

How do people clean sleep masks? My skin is so prone to spots I think if I couldn't wash it regularly it would make my skin worse? Or does silk help it to 'stay cleaner'!??

I’d be far too scared to wear a mask, the fear of taking it off and for someone to be stood right there. Maybe a plug in children’s glow light would be enough light or what about those glow worms? Do you remember those? I don’t like the room pitch black especially if I’m on my own but complete fear of the mask and not having full sound. Need to be able to hear them coming for me so I can find a weapon and be ready
