she was relatively popular at the time within the political elite sphere for repub and dem but she had alot of baggage that the repubs could hound on and her overwhelming popularity with the elites caused a wedge issue with the dissatisfied lower class who saw it as the DNC crowning her without their approval pretty good article on vox called: "Was the Democratic primary rigged?" goes into what was happening at the time and how it kind of fell apart leading into 2016 and the concerns around primaries moving forward from a 2017 perspective

The whole comer/FBI incident finished her, providing a store of ammunition for Trump. The rise of Trump is a warning how easy it is to play on the electorate’s fear and insecurity- to the point where they vote against their best interests. That’s the bizarre aspect of the MAGA movement and why they are referred to as a cult. That and their complete lack of political engagement. They literally know nothing, so naturally believe everything Trump says.
