Hello Ronald and Mads! Thanks for sharing your cucumber news. Sign me up to vacation in the cold, I could do without the heat here in the Philadelphia PA area. Parts of the US have 2 broods of cicadas out. That’s cucumber news here, when the bugs will be out, for how long, and that it’s illegal to collect them. Their season is almost over, and won’t happen again for 13 years and 17 years. Those are very weird bugs. There are several broods and all on different schedules.

In the Philippines, our cucumber news is called "Marites." It's a short form of "Maré, what's the latest?" Maré is a term of endearment for woman. And Marites is a local female name. Her name became a meme for gossiper.

Thank you for the popcorn tip; I had no idea. I will try on my balcony (if only I can overcome my lethargy). The bee illustration was cute as honey. Will it be a T-shirt? Or the cucumber? I don't think we have a name for cucumber news, but filler news do exist of course. In most cases they involve an animal doing something unexpected like a bear entering the porch of a summer cottage or a runaway cow exploring freedom. One summer celebrity was a squirrel that made multiple visits to a supermarket to get a candy bar. And NOT PAYING!!! He/she got banned. Filler news are an old phenomenon, by the way. A Spanish columnist told this story many years ago (before the internet) about French newspapers. In the early times of newspaper consumption (first half of the 20th century, let's say) there was a specialty field in journalism just for filler news. So, as well as there were news reporters and sports reporters and gossip specialists there was also a specialist for run over dogs "perros aplastados" (literally "flattened dogs") chiens écrasés. Not to be taken too narrowly, but these news often really were about dog victims in traffic, because driving was a novelty and road rules scarce. It was an actual steady job, but naturally the lowest ranking in the newsroom hierarchy.

I was just quizzing my sister who went to Portugal about whether or not she encountered any hostile Norwegians on "syden"... haven't heard back, but Portugal is sounding more and more like a beautiful, fun, and economical place to go...sunny and beaches, what's not to love?! Thank you for cucumber news from a cool green Norway. Even if you don't travel on vacation, you can go outside. In Arizona we are staying inside because it is 117 degrees Fahrenheit outside. People are treated for burns if they fall down on the sidewalk.

I don't follow the currency rates, so it was a new thing that NOK is low now. Maybe I should come to Norway next month because it's cheaper now :) That clip of tourists walking on snow in April 2015 was funny. In that year I went to Lofoten in July and it really was a cold summer. Some locals there said it was the coldest summer in 40 years or like that.

I can't remember if it was all TV channels or just some/one of them but when I was small , there used to be a features at the end of news bulletins called "And Finally..." which was essentially a fun story so however depressing the news had been that day, it always ended on a happy note. I don't think it was "cucumber news" as such - unless it was that someone's Grandma had grown the world's biggest cucumber. It was usually something like a video of a dog on a skateboard or a celebrity turning up at someone's wedding.

It tastes like a good steak but is dark blood red. I didn’t detect any fish taste but maybe it was because of the restaurant preparation. I had to try it at least once to see what the fuss was all about. I found it tasty but there was always that underlying “ewwww” factor while eating it. The whale they use is smaller species and not endangered.

I agree with most of this, but whale meat is much better for the climate than industrial farmed meat, even much greener than chicken for Norwegians, and it's sustainable. It's not as if we're gonna die from eating whale meat. If we're gonna continue eating meat, and want to save the climate, then people should eat locally and sustainably sourced food, when possible - in Norway whale is such a source.
