He even lost 2008 AO to Djokovic, 2008 RG and Wimbledon to Nadal , 2009 AO to Nadal, imagine being no1 for about 4.5 years and to lose continuosly to one player on multiple surfaces, he felt his era was about to end and that's the reason he broke down(but he came back well in 2009 winning RG and Wimbledon)

@@hardsam68 I’m sure it had a lot to do with it. Roger was in great form the entire tournament in fact, many people picked Federer as the favorite against Rafa in the final. In this match, there was still an ounce of belief in Federer that he knew if he plays his best, nobody can beat him, not even Nadal. This match was the true changing of the guard because there were no excuses, he’s fully recovered from his so called “mono” that hampered him in 2008 (which I think is not true) and Nadal beat him on a neutral surface.

@JohnSmith-jb2jf
@JohnSmith-jb2jf Жыл бұрын
That's true, but Nadal found a tactic that works. He avoided Roger's forehand as much as possible. Federer's backhand really only became great in his early 30's. It was the weakest part of his game. I'm a Roger fan and noticed this pattern pretty early on in the rivalry. It got to the point where Roger was running around the ball to put himself in position to hit forehands out of desperation, which opened up the court for Nadal to finish the point.
@townsley2
@townsley2 Жыл бұрын
I beg to disagree. Fed's record on clay is better than Nadal's on grass. Nadal has the overall lead just cause they met very often on clay where Federer could often reach the final, but Nadal has only beaten Fed once on grass in 2008 (Twas a great match in Wimbly final but it was the only time). Fed has beaten Nadal twice on clay. Great rivalry anyway !

How much Nadal's shots used to loop up and bounce high in those early days!! Those head high balls to Roger's backhand gave him no attacking power off that wing. His footwork was more explosive, and he was a ball retrieving BEAST, a human equivalent of a brick wall on the other side. The only reason why Federer didn't get obliterated even sooner was because of his own athleticism and his serve. Federer on the other hand was always at a power disadvantage and locked up on the backhand, giving Nadal full control over the middle of the court inside the baseline, until the new racket came along. This year he's been hitting cannons on both wings and picking the ball incredibly early - now he's the one stepping into the court. Nadal now seems to have no idea what to do (except maybe still on clay). But both of them were cheetahs around the court 10 years ago. They have slowed down half a step since then, and lost a lot of hair ....

Great video. As we have all seen this year, a lot of the H2H reason is due to Rafa’s supernatural clay court play and the mental effects that has caused in their matchup. That said, as Roger said himself he can’t win them all against Rafa but if (there are no ifs, I know..) the clay courts wouldn’t have affected their rivalry that much, I believe Roger would have had around a 2/1 winning ratio in non-clay matches. Now it’s 1.3/1 (since winning the last 5) on grass/hardcourt/indoors and Roger himself has pointed out how much it has helped not playing him on clay.

23-10 It is astonishing that there was a time when there was such a difference. Rafa's perfection is astonishing, as he has been winning since he was a teenager against Roger at his peak. It is also important to note Roger's technique, which has greatly improved h2h from that point. The h2h since 2015 includes Roger's growth as well as Rafa's decline as reasons, but still this growth play is probably rare in history.

interesting that federer as he got older waaay out of his prime managed get a few more wins in the rivalry. I think for two main reasons: his backhand improved later in his career and second because he skipped more on the clay. i think if he had skipped more clay matches from the beginning their rivalry would be almost even. but ofc nadal deserves all the respect for beeing the best clay courter of all times so it should reflect in the rivalry also! and to be fair nadal has some important wins over fed on hard and grass.

In my opinion, most people ignore that Federer was unbeaten against Rafa since he get used to the bigger racket except FO. If Roger would have made that decision earlier, It might be an entirely different story altogether. But I believe talent-wise nobody is better than Roger, but perseverance, fighting spirit, and determination will always overtake talent in any given field.

The bigger racket isn't helping him against joker at sw19 or uso... It's not about age or rackets, Nadal and joker are better than fed. Mentally Nadal is toughest, followed by joker then its fed... It might sound ludicrous but a 2 hand BH is now more potent in tennis

Post change of racket size Federer's record vs his toughest opponent has been 5-1(Loss at FO) and he can at least able to compete at the same level with the GOAT contenders,being past his prime and 5 years older. Now coming to your Sampras and Agassi argument 20 year old Roger doesn't achieved anything and sampras considered greatest grass court player until that point and winner of past 4 years, obviously nobody will talk about age, In Agassi case nobody doubted Federer's win except you I guess, because Federer at his prime and Agassi was 34. The most objective way to measure who is better is to look at the statistics on the ATP site, and then form your opinion. -Federer has 310 weeks at number one, and Rafa has 209 weeks at number one. -In their H2H, Federer leads on grass 3-1 and hard court 11-9, and Rafa leads on clay 14-2. -On grass, Federer has 19 titles and Rafa has 4 titles. -On hard court, Federer has 71 titles and Rafa has 22 titles. -On clay, Federer has 11 titles and Rafa has 59 titles. Based on these statistics, one can objectively conclude that as of now Federer is the better grass court player, the slightly better hard court player, and Rafa is the by far the better clay court player. From there, you can make arguments that maybe Federer or Rafa was injured during certain periods or that certain wins were more significant, but you have to start with the facts first rather than leading with opinion.

Buddy federer was 10 times better in his younger days wth are you talking about, there’s no way a 35 year old man is going to beat a prime 20 year old who’s fast and hardly possible to hit a winner on.

I think fed’s only shortcoming is backhand rally ability, he can cover the back hand side when he was young

I like 12:45 - 14:05 part. Still a LOOT of bitterness here. But at last Federer found a way on Nadal :) and Nadal I guess cannot longer exploit Federer's backhand. And 15-23 is not 10-23 or 1-6 (especially when we exclude clay court matches and then we have 13-10 for Federer :) ). Moreover it is possible that Federer will continue to skip the clay court part season, so it can help Federer make their h2h even more even.

Yaa the way he smashed that ball clearly tells you how badly he wanted that. After AO 2017, his celebrations against Nadal havent been this animated.

If you want to exclude the clay, exclude the indoors too. That would still make Nadal more dominant on the h2h. He leads on outdoor hard courts as well. Both of them have their specific surface. For Fed is super fast low bouncing hard or grass. For Nadal is either clay or high bouncing medium speed outdoor hard court. Both are legends.

Well, think this way. If Roger played on clay the same level of Pete Sampras, one of the greats of the Open Era, he would have only faced Nadal a couple of times on that surface, max, and therefore would be leading the total H2H. So the paradox is that Federer is good enough on clay to make a bunch of SF and F against Nadal but not good enough to win them, which tilts the H2H against him.

Adriano Tranquilli, Only 3 outdoor hard court matches played before 2010 compared to 11 outdoor matches after 2010. Plus, 2017 outdoor h2h was 4-0 Fed when both returned to peak form
