I think the 1st was already in a state of decay while the two to the right were still fresh. So they had to begin to decay 1st, for the mold to spread.

Lots of strawberries tend to grow mold under the calyx. It’s possible that the mold did not transfer over and was inherently latent. Moisture tends to stay tucked under there during growth which can lead to the molding.

Strawberries rot fast anyway. Their are fungi and bacteria on them from the moment it's harvested and there are many in the air aswell. It's spontaneous fermenting (like kriek beers).

I work in strawberry plant pathology and the scientific name of this fungus is Botrytis cinerea, or commonly known as Gray Mold. For strawberries, botrytis is arguably the most common fungus found on the fruit and it is the only fungus that will continue to grow on the fruit after harvesting, as you can see in the video. In our lab we have saved collections of fungi like this dating all the way back to 1993. We keep such old collections to be able to compare their genetics to the modern ones to see how they have become more or less aggressive or resistant to fungicides over time. During ideal wet, cold conditions, I have seen botrytis infect over 95% of all the strawberries in a field. I have also seen botrytis vary in color from the usual brownish-grey color to a shiny, soft blueish-grey.

@@rowanbelt3612 actually interestingly bread is one food in which mold spreads insanely fast, as the web-like structures of the gluten allows the mold to weave around it and spread like wildfire, meaning when mold is visibly blooming on one side, it has already reached the other however a hard cheese the mold must burrow through, making it less dangerous interestingly rice is considered to be compremised by mold only a few hours after it is cooked, as mold can grow in it extremely easily also the only part of the mold we see it literally just the spores, hundreds of thousands of spores, so we only see it when it is already full grown and blooming that being said mold isn't as dangerous as most of us imagine, usually (but it can very easiliy be very dangerous, just not worth risking too much really)

Thank you for always giving such a different perspective on life and mold. I have a few mental health disorders which make it very hard for me to keep my room clean. Mold visits me more frequently than other people actually. I discovered your videos a while ago and I don’t know why but they make me feel a lot better about myself. Mold isn’t great or healthy, but it’s natural, it’s a part of life just like every other form of deterioration and decay and it is fascinating and shouldn’t hold this judgment that we have attached to it via our societal norms. It might be the beautiful piano music in the background or the phrase “pet mold” in the video title or the fact that I’m currently getting off of my medication that this touched me so much but thank you. Curious, what kind of environment was the container for this time lapse, fully sealed or did it have a constant fresh air supply? I was surprised at how solid the remains were at the end. Great video. Thank you.

People saying they were expecting it to be faster or surprised at the one on the far right starting to visibly mold over before it had visibly spread from the middle one probably missed the day in biology class where they went over how mold spores spread. The two strawberries were infected and being filled with mold tendrils that were setting up "roots" for the fruiting bodies (the fuzz) on the surface

This is a great visual for how mold spreads. If you don't want a pet mold, you need to isolate it to prevent it from spreading, since it spreads via spores, not engulfment.
