Hi Mr. Binnie , first thankyou for all the knowledge you have been sharing with us , I really appreciate it . Where I live it's a common practice to freeze date pollen and use it next season for the female trees although it's not as fertile as it is fresh but it works !! so that means the pollen is still alive !! RIGHT ? and there must be some value in it, so I'm thinking about freezing date pollen and use it when needed !! What do you think about this idea ? I know it's a weird question but whit the long drought that is affecting the Mediterranean regions due to climate changes it's unaffordable to use pollen supplements all thy way through .

I remember reading a study on raising queens with pollen samples of different ages. They found that the quality of queens grew progressively worse as the age of the pollen got older and when the pollen was two years old it was almost not worth using. I agree with you that using pollen from the previous year would still work but I would only use it if needed.

Bob, do you have any tips on keeping pollen Pattie’s moist after applying them to hive? Do you put them in zip lock bags?
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 11 ай бұрын
I actually don't. I've not used pollen patties much in warm weather. In cooler weather they stay moist in my limited experience.

What is your thoughts on feeding dry pollen supplement in a feeder?

Many people do it and report benefits. I've not done very much of it so I couldn't give a well informed answer.

Good evening Bob, i am quite one to give the double rather than half a portion pollen subs. Since about two years, I think to observe something where I'm really not sure if I'm fantasizing... ;-) Do you think it is possible that the nurse bees have a kind of protein level feeling? I see that in colonies where i have reached a very good level, increased pollen deposits on the combs, in contrast to the control colonies at the same location, which have not received subs...! The nurse bees seem to keep it there as pollen bread for bad times... and I see no differences if I give liquid amino acids or patties! Would you have observed something like this? Pat
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Patrick. I have not observed that but I have seen royal jelly puddles under young larvae increase in size when feeding sub in a pollen dearth.

Good evening Bob, a friend came over to walk me through your process of splitting using the excluder then adding your double screen board. We were able to split to colonies with 5 frames of eggs, larvae, capped, food and nectar. When my buddy left I decided to throw on a large jar of 2:1 in each split. Even though there’s some supplies there, was it wrong for me to do that? Should I add a quarter of pollen supplement? Appreciate your time.
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 2 жыл бұрын
Feeding in a way that won't cause robbing can actually be helpful when splitting. I would only add pollen supplement if there isn't any pollen coming in.

@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, many beekeepers make their own recipes but I have never done it and couldn't offer a good recipe. A few things I do know is that expeller processed soybean flower used to be used but it has been found to bad for the bees so you don't see it used as much anymore. I also know that powdered egg and a particular type of brewers yeast is used a lot in many recipes. I would look closely and get educated before I started making stuff up. What we think is good for the bees isn't always so.

Interesting comment. We seem to do fine with it. We purchase it in both patty form and bulk soft patty and it definitely disappears. Maybe there is a difference in dry bulk.

@@davemaloneyvideos I am a commercial operator. I had bags of soy flour which they collected and ate. After what I when through with Manns Lake, I will never again buy anything from them. Snake oil salesman! They made it smell good for humans and awful for bees. Do not reply as I will not answer. Snake Oil.
