This week I felt lonely for the first time. I've always been alone, but never felt lonely. And I learned why: I don't even know what it means to have someone, so I just never missed it. My mother destroyed our family when I was 8, she did what she could to keep me away from my father as long as she could, and she was out 12-14 hours a day for work. The little time she was home she would complain to me about the chores and she let me use the computer without any limits and wouldn't do any effort to take me away from it to spend time with her. Needless to say, I suffered from depression before my transition to adulthood (2.5y ago). Since then I've been starting to understand why, little by little. The more I think about it the more I learn, and I just can't stop thinking about it. I think I'm really hurt. All I wanted was to have had a family.

The real problem is not social media. You touched it at the start, its urban design and lack of places, especially free places. I WANT a social place. But where can I go that is not full of drunks, dance music, or sports maniacs? Like a coffeeshop, but with books, some weed, arcade machines, pool tables, where people can chill and just talk?

i usually spend most of my time in vrchat, mainly because it is that human connection that text or video chat cant do, but still far away. I absolutely hate talking on voice chat or discord or text chat and VR is the main way of talking to me.

Hey thanks! I'm at a pretty lonely point in my life right now. Graduated high school last year and moved a few states away with my parents. Stuck in a really weird situation where I don't have a job and am not in school (it's a long story) and I won't be able to get either for a couple months, so meeting people passively is totally out of the question. Anyway, one really good way that I've found to be around people is to volunteer. It might seem a little daunting at first, but if you keep volunteerung at the same place, you can make some good connections there. You also get to see so many unique people. And I guess you help make the world a better place or something. Highly recommend giving it a shot!

Niko I've just recently discovered your channel and I couldnt agree more with most things you say, I really think the way to move forward with some of these things is to back off and be in reality

I do think that the issue of being lonely is causing more problems by the things we do to avoid loneliness than the loneliness itself. If your interactions with others is causing you a ton of stress and you're scared to leave because "you'll be lonely," then you should leave whatever space is causing the problem. I had a rough falling out with friends that could've been avoided just by recognizing I was feeling unhappy with them and if they realized the same regarding me. Sometimes lonliness is all you need for a bit, and that time apart can help you appreciate other people/things that you didn't value before. If you are surrounded by friends but feel alone then those people aren't your friends. Take the time to get away, even if just temorarily, because sticking close to people that make you unhappy will hurt both you and them in the long term. Also yeah in person interactions will do way better for you than strictly online stuff.

Yeah it's rough, i couldn't imagine not having a brother or sister. If i was truly alone during those years of emotional and physical abuse. I don't know what would be of me at the moment. Locking yourself in your room like a makeshift prison, then that slowly over time develops to being a makeshift prison in your own head. When that happens it's pretty hard to reverse. Friends that at one point in time you could hug, touch. it's no longer like that anymore, it's so disconnected, impersonal. Pretty much what you said.That's probably why a lot of people 30 and below, are deeply depressed people most of the times. Not only that but i believe the older generation cared more about themselves then their own children. I'll share a vividly etched memory. I'm in first grade at the time, over at my uncle jacks house. He's sitting on the couch visibly drunk and drinking, watching his old shitty black and white westerns. I'm sitting on the ground watching with him, to scared to get on the couch next to him. Tells me to do push-ups out of no where, I can't. Calls me a puxxy, and weak. Tell him I don't know what a puxxy means, tells me it's like a bixch, tell him i don't know what bixch is, tells me it's like a coward, tell him i don't know what that is. Calls me rexxxx, You can figured it out don't want youtube removing this because of that, that one clicked knew what that was. Tells me to do multiplication 3x3, didn't know in first grade wasn't taught that yet. Calls me that word again, tells me to go grab him a beer, I do. That was just some of the emotional abuse not the psychical stuff but you get the point. He sat there and changed his words multiple times until i finally understood and felt bad about myself. That went on for years, my aunt, his wife just as cold hearted as him. She said she was beat and stuff as a kid, so i guess in her eyes that means when you grow up you're just an absolute piece of human garbage to the kids around you and you inflict them with the same pain and abuse you went through.

One thing that makes me agree with you is back when I grew up, I had some classmates that I would spend time with. We would play Golden Eye 64 with split-screen, would do the same in a different town with friends (we had a gaming club where we met once a week to play console games). There's such a huge difference between playing the same game together with people in the same room as you, compared to playing the same game with people online. There's just a huge connection part that you don't get from online friends, sort of makes me wish I could go back to having the gaming club me and my friends started..

Hey Niko, i wanna be honest at least here to you and all. The second i opened up this video, for a second i didn't felt lonely. About a year i've been living in a foreign country for my education and sometimes it gets so hard that i feel like i can't take anymore. I can't be by myself anymore and after this you go looking for friends but friends or friendships is not a thing that you can find by searching them. It happens all of a sudden, after that point all you can do is build that friendship if you'd like to. Alright, my suggestion when dealing with loneliness, is to join like... clubs or societies. I have joined several different things throughout my time. I've joined Hema Fencing clubs, Artist clubs. and my favorite by far is just to join in Viking re-enactment.

I have to disagree and imo it depends on who you are and where you have been in life per person. irl interaction utterly traumatized me and I've been diagnosed for it officially. I personally find comfort in having safe and legit friendships for the first time in my life online. Nothing wrong with that. I hate the stigma of "go outside, you'll be happier". I work and get fun in computer, but i'am not alone, also i got to the shooting range time to time, to relief some stress, and get more anxiety due to new shitty laws about guns, we almost can't shoot a paper because it was a tree nowadays. Soo, hard to keep have any level of fun. Anyway, i feel lonely time to time, but most the time i'am not, and i have maybe more than 12 hours per day of screen usage in average... Some days i start my day wake up and going to work at 8 a.m. get out of my work about 18 a.m. with some pauses to launch and coffe in the day, i guess i have about 7 to 8 hours in screen usage by job itself, also i play and have my own youtube channel to run, it get about others hours in screen as well, up to 22~24 of the night, soo, the dinner i get out for about 1 to 2 hours, soo about 11 up to 14 hours each day, in the weekend i most keep at home, but as i sayed i go to range shoot some gun, a while ago i used to visit some coffe shop with a friend, but he is building up a life with a girl that love him, but he actually never loved anyone, like a lot this girl, but using his words, "i never felt anything greater than a like a lot, soo, i guess it is not love, right?" something about those lines, and well, my other friend that hangout almost all months once or two moved to another city kinda far, because her girlfriend get pregnant them they decided to rush a mariage and something get wronh with his apt, soo borh moved to her parents house at least for now. And another of my friend kinda get really religious a long time ago, he almost not play anymore, but we live close and he always getting something on curch to do, or travelling with his wife. But i understand the need to be arround people, even random people, i mostly not like to rush a mail or shopping to do some fast task, but when i just "waste" time in it, is a blast, nor exactly the normal way, like running kart with friends, but a blast like, look all those people here, it refresh ourself i guess, somehow... But, i normally not need those type of feeling in a long time, maybe because i always have party with neighbors or family, or friends, is rare to get a long time without any event that i goes and get a lot of fun. Last weekend just to put out, a family part i talk a lot with some parents, and friends of family members, also play a lot of domino, a tabletop game here, i won 1 match, and lost 2, but that was fine, we play duo vs duo, kinda cool. Soo, i understand, but is rare to me felt like that even in a surface level, but also i know that it is hard for people that live almost alone all the time

I’m 14, and almost 2 years ago I moved away from home. About 6000 kilometres. I gotta say he’s completely right about everything in this video, especially the online communication part. I still talk to one of my friends back home very regularly, but it’s not as engaging as if it were real life. I haven’t really made any good friends here, besides people who I can ask what class we have next or what the homework was, etc. Even though my one really good friend back home is one of the best people I know in the whole world, he’s half the world away. And even though I talk to him and game with him regularly, I feel lonely pretty often. Anyways just thought my experience might be worth something in regards to this.
