ABOUT ME: Hallo, Servus, and welcome to my channel! My name is Felicia (Feli), I'm 29, and I'm a German living in the USA! I was born and raised in Munich, Germany but have been living in Cincinnati, Ohio off and on since 2016. I first came here for an exchange semester during my undergrad at LMU Munich, then I returned for an internship, and then I got my master's degree in Cincinnati. I was lucky enough to win the Green Card lottery and have been a permanent resident since 2019! In my videos, I talk about cultural differences between America and Germany, things I like and dislike about living here, and other topics I come across in my everyday life in the States. Let me know what YOU would like to hear about in the comments below. DANKE :)

*No, the steering wheel is not on the right side!* 😅 I see that a lot of people in the comments are confused about this but no, we're not driving a British car. The video is just mirrored because we filmed this with the front camera of the phone. It automatically gets mirrored this way and honestly, in times of TikTok and other social media platforms, I'm so used to the mirrored videos that I didn't even think about mirroring it back while editing. Thanks for the great feedback guys! We're so glad you're enjoying the video 😊

«The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram; And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon; And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias; And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa; And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias; And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias; And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias; And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon: And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel; And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor; And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud; And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob; And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.» (Gospel - Matthew - Chapter 1)

This brings back many memories for me. When I first met my wife 35 years ago in Lima Peru, she knew no English and I knew practically zero Spanish. Although I'm fluent in English and German she was not. She was only fluent in Spanish. But somehow we managed to communicate and we fell madly in love with one another and 6 months later we married in Lima, Peru. We have four children all married and so far five grandchildren. She became fluent in English over the years and I am becoming fluent in Spanish. Love knows no boundaries or limitations and truly is the universal language that transcends words.

It's good that people get to see things like this and come to understand that German isn't an angry language. Feli speaks very clearly too and makes it easier to hear each word separately. It reminded me of being a kid in the 1970s, and the kids we usually played with (Kretschmann), their parents had moved them all here from Germany. Their mom only spoke German, so the kids helped me learn a little bit of German, "She's asking if you would like a soda.", and how to respond, "Bitte." and "Vielen Dank.", stuff like that. She was very nice, like Feli.

This is literally how my first day of work in Germany went. I'm volunteering for a year here, and even though I studied a bit of German before I came (A1 level), I was lost on that first day. Only one person at my work speaks English and she only showed me around for an hour before leaving me with a group. Anytime someone spoke to me, I just looked at them helplessly like "I'm trying but I got no idea what you are saying". Luckily, my colleagues were super nice and patient. My german has definetly improved now. Still, there are some days where I can't understand people and feel so lost

Thankfully, she and our two roommates do also speak English, but I'm trying very hard to become fluent in German. But I'm still on A1 right now. He does really well!

Try listening a lot on YT videos and movies but with English subtitles so that you will learn by hearing the structure, rhythm and "melody" of German and watching the mouth (pronounciation). You will learn idioms and how to use them in conversations. I am doing the same the other way round with English (as a native German). I have improved passive vocabulary a lot from hearing alone. There are patterns in every language.

10:40 That's really interesting. I noticed that English speakers often don't hear any difference between German vowels and their corresponding umlauts. They learn learn that "Apfel" means apple (singular) and "Äpfel" means apples (plural), and they feel that there's no way to distinguish them phonetically. It just sounds the same to them. And "Apfel" and "Äpfel" sound so different to native speakers that there's literally no way to confuse them

Actually there are many areas where Europeans switch between at least two languages: in entertainment like pop and rock music as well as professional areas like computer technology, electronics, etc. Being exposed to such an environment helps a lot to get used to it. However Feli does particularly well with language switching.

It’s probably really great for learning English , gives you the original feeling of the show, less expensive in post production etc. but not very inclusive. What about people who can’t read so fast or have trouble reading and watching what happens in the show at the same time? Or people who can’t read at all, are disabled, elderly and so on? (Not saying one is better, just wrote down thoughts that crossed my mind)
@Tuinierenopstrobalen

@@roonilwazlib5402 that is exactly the reason why Germany and France dub over everything. In fact, most European countries do so, besides some Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands and Portugal (as far as I'm aware). We consider ourselves lucky that almost 100% adults are able to read and write. Some exceptions are possible obviously. And we get tought many other languages from a relatively young age as well. Pretty much everyone knows at least one other language.

This was super cute! Ben did great, and he was such a good sport. I can relate to that feeling of relief at the end when he heard English again. ☺️ Both times that I've traveled to other countries that have little to no English speakers, I felt such a sense of relief and relaxation to hear English when I arrived back home. Even if the American airport workers were not as friendly and hospitable 🙈, I was still really happy to hear their voices. That's one of the reasons I really admire it when someone comes to the US, learns English fluently, and loves us enough to stay permanently. What a level of mental fitness you must have! 👏

As a German language student, I wish I have a German friend doing the same thing to me during the day - speaking only in German to me and correct my mistakes in writing without using any English. In comparison, the strongest reason why I speak Cantonese and Mandarin close to native levels and can read/write a lot of written Chinese is because I grew up not speaking any English at home and the Chinese language schools my parents sent me to when I was a kid also had a "no English allowed during class" rule so that worked for me. That's why I'm confident my German will improve greatly (meaning less likely to forget stuff) if someone spoke only German to me once in a while even here in the USA. :)

Ben did great! I only recently discovered your channel and I love it! I'm French myself, and I love watching your videos about the differences between German and American cultures, that makes me think about what seems closer to my own culture (and yeah, most of the time I'm feeling closer to the German way, but not always). Also in Middle School (or Junior High? Never knew the difference) I learnt German before I learnt English and by the end of my student years I was way better in German than in English but sadly that's not the case anymore, due to lack of practice I lost all my German vocabulary. But you make me want to learn German again! And last, it's Carglass in French too, and with the same jingle as well! "Carglass répare, Carglass remplace !"

I once went on a date with an American guy in Europe and we sat down to eat something quick. It was a pretty international place and when we got up there was a group of French women asking if they can take our table. I talked to them in French and then an Austrian guy popped up and asked me the same, so I told him in German that these girls already asked. My date was so impressed by me switching languages that he said he believed I set this all up just to brag 😅

I remember occasions like this trying to keep up with a native speaker... kudos to Ben for doing such a great job. Way better than I did with a Chinese speaker! Note, I've lost most Chinese that I'd learned, but am currently working on learning Spanish... so much easier and less frustrating! lol. So much fun watching this. Ben did so good, really good. And I liked it he was talking (some) German even when he was alone with the camera. Feli, you had the translation wrong for hammer drill, oopsi. 🤭 It's a Bohrhammer, not a Bohrmaschine. Bohrmaschine would be just a drill or drilling machine, the impact drill you mentioned in the store, Ben already has, is the Schlagbohrmaschine.

@zorrothebug
@zorrothebug 11 ай бұрын
@@FelifromGermany Eine Bohrmaschine does not have any "hammering" functionality and was the typical drill for households in the years after ww2. Nowadays new ones are specialized for precise wood or metal drilling. The impact drill, was introduced in the 60's and became the norm or better to say the typical form of a drill for a long time from 70's on and a hammer drill was the exception and mainly used only by professionals. The illustrious Hilti or the well known Boshhammer may come to mind. With falling prices for the hammer drills this slowly changed in the 90's and nowadays everyone whoever used a hammer drill once won't get an impact drill anymore. The Ryobi Ben purchased was in fact a Bohrhammer, a small one but it is one. I've seen this exact model also here in Germany at Toom.
