'The Passions of Vaughan Williams' explores the life, music and loves of this great English composer.
Ralph Vaughan Williams OM 1872 - 1958. An English composer. His works include operas, ballets, chamber music, secular and religious vocal pieces and orchestral compositions including nine symphonies, written over sixty years. Strongly influenced by Tudor music and English folk-song, his output marked a decisive break in British music from its German-dominated style of the 19th century.

Fascinating, a real joy to watch this documentary on this great man. My favourite is the Fantasia Tallis. It speaks to you and is entrancing. Can't stop playing it. Love VW. A film should be made about his passionate life Xxxx ❤❤❤

I love everything by Vaughan Williams. My favorite is A sea symphony. Thank you for this documentary. I do not know all the music he composed but the idea that I still have music to discover from him makes me very happy, it is always a great joy to discover music I know I will love.

This BBC documentary dates from May 2008, and marked the half centennial of the composer's death. Several of the contributors died fairly soon afterwards, so how fortunate we are that this was made in time to record their recollections. Many thanks for the upload.

Ralph Vaughn Williams is one of the great 20th-century composers - probably the finest symphonist of the era. Thank you for sharing this thoughtful tribute to the man and his music.

I'd been stuck with the Russians Shostakovich, Prokofiev and, of course, Stravinsky, for so long, and I was obssessed with Charles Ives and his insane, ultra-modern capacity. Yet I recently rediscovered old V-W when I caught the middle of his fourth symphony--and it stirred, shocked me. I immediately went about listening to all of his symphonies, and felt a fool for neglecting him for so long. As a teenager I loved his work, but then Stravinsky, as he does, caught my ear and introduced me to that modern 20th Century sound, and I never looked back, until the last few years. Ralph Vaughn-Williams really is our greatest composer, in my humble opinion. He may have had his equals in Britain, but none of their music has resonated like his. I put him up there with the giants of the 20th Century, equal to any truly great composer, and I'm certain he has enriched my creative energy since I rediscovered him.

I too have been lured by other composers and so much is a matter of mood. I make no apologies for loving our English Composers and the sweet music that breathes the birdsong rich pure air of England's green and pleasant land. Thank you so much for the lovely comment.

@@feline1104 He was also very modern; a lot of people, even his admirers, tend to overlook that. I'm forever playing certain passages to friends these days, and they're like: "Whoa, is that Vaughn-Williams? But it sounds so...different."

A great film and a unique composer, amongst the best England's ever produced. The influence of "Dona Nobis Pacem" on Britten is inestimable and is reflected in Britten's Requiem. Also the real mise en scene for VR's Pastoral symphony is too moving for words. Many thanks for posting.

Hermoso documental de Vaughan Williams gran compositor británico de música clásica, ópera, bellos los coros que acompañan a la Sinfonía Filarmónica, oh!! Jayne gracias por tan bello documental y la maravillosa escenografía, un excelente complemento que nos habla de la primera Guerra Mundial que fue muy cruenta y los miles de soldados caídos🌏

After 60 years of listening to classical music, my 5 favorite 20th Century Composers are primarily in a 3-way-draw between Stravinsky, Bartok and R.Strauss and secondly a 2-way draw between Vaughan-Williams and Sibelius.

Regarding the gripping quality of its content and the dramatic circumstances of its wartime premiere in 1943, RVW's Symphony No. 5 in D Major is the English parallel of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D Minor and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 in C Major (Leningrad) - Three memorable examples of person, place and time merged artistically as if each one was a providential 'alignment of the planets.'
