@@AndreRMeyer now that I see it on a computer screennow it definitely wasn't a conventional bore cut but it did have components of one. Bore cut. That is when you cut your notch into the tree and then instead of doing a conventional back cut you bore through the tree, finish your hinge and cut from the inside out to finish your back cut. You can do a partial conventional back cut which allows you to put wedges in to keep the tree from sitting back on your cut. It is a good cut to know for trees that's are at risk of barber chairing.

It was a great cut. But there were two obvious questions. 1. Why didn't the feller toss some of the surrounding loose dirt and ash on top of those flames? It would have reduced the smoke and heat in his face. 2. Why did he drop it towards the boundary and over the area that had managed to escape the fire and stay green? Especially since the cut off portion remained on fire and could have continued to burn into the green space? 🤷‍♀️
@davidbraun9309
@davidbraun9309 Ай бұрын
He is most likely working in conjunction with a fire crew. Hazard tree fallers drop trees like this that endanger the fire crews, because they can burn through to the point that they fall (same with snags; this was a live tree). The fire in it is a secondary concern; once its on the ground, it will get cut up and the fire put out by shoveling dirt on the inside parts.
@elizabethbottroff1218
@elizabethbottroff1218 Ай бұрын
@@davidbraun9309 It just seemed odd. They could have dropped that tree in any direction, and they chose towards the one place yet to be burned.🤦‍♀️
@davidbraun9309
@davidbraun9309 Ай бұрын
@@elizabethbottroff1218 Speculating here, but the tree was likely inside of the fire perimeter. Late in the fire fighting effort fire lines would be around the wildfire area, which would include unburned, lightly burned, and crown fire areas where nearly all trees are dead. If the tree in the video was near the fire perimeter, it would have been felled to the inside of it (just like in the case of building fire lines), so as not to encourage fire spread. The objective in managing a fire that is contained (or nearly so) is to make sure the remaining hot spots are put out, or they are monitored and allowed to go out, depending on conditions and available crews. If resources are available and it makes sense to do so, smoldering stumps, roots, and individual trees are found and put out, unless snow or rain is predicted in the next few days. You can see grubbed out stumps and hollow logs cut up and scattered around in fire areas from this work, even years later.
